Neither Linode nor a spare PC is the automatic winner. A Linode VPS may suit a stream that needs a cloud-hosted relay, but its compute price is only part of the cost, and a small shared-CPU plan is not proven to encode any particular video workload. A spare PC can avoid a new compute bill if you already own suitable hardware, but its real cost and dependability depend on electricity, home upload, power, and the work needed to keep it running. Compare the stream you actually plan to send, then test the complete setup before relying on it.
Start with the workload: relay or encode?
The key distinction is whether the computer merely forwards an already encoded video feed or must decode, composite, or transcode video. A relay and an encoder can have very different compute needs. Akamai describes its Accelerated Linodes as intended for transcoding and streaming, but that does not establish that a particular plan can handle your resolution, frame rate, codec, or number of outputs. The available plan listings are provider specifications, not workload benchmarks.
- Already encoded feed: You are evaluating a forwarding workload. Do not assume that a VM’s advertised CPU and memory prove it will sustain your specific feed; test it.
- Encoding or transcoding: You are evaluating a more compute-intensive workload. Akamai’s Accelerated Linode family uses dedicated CPUs and VPUs and starts at a substantially higher price than the shared-CPU examples below.
- Spare PC: Suitability depends on the actual CPU or GPU, encoder settings, cooling, and stability. The title alone does not establish any of those details.
For either route, identify the source format, output resolution and frame rate, bitrate, codec, and number of simultaneous streams before choosing hardware or estimating cost.
What the listed Linode plans cost—and what they do not prove
Akamai’s North America pricing page, accessed October 3, 2026, listed these shared-CPU plans. Prices and allowances can vary by region and change, so check the selected region’s current terms before committing.

The first two rows are shared-CPU plan listings, not evidence that either can encode a particular stream. Akamai’s plan-types documentation describes the Accelerated family as optimized for transcoding and streaming and gives a starting price of $280/month. That is a different workload profile and price tier from the shared-CPU examples.
Estimate continuous transfer before choosing a VM
For a rough decimal-unit estimate, multiply the stream bitrate in megabits per second by 10.8 to estimate gigabytes sent per day; multiply that result by 30 for a 30-day month. At 10 Mbps, that is approximately 108 GB per day and 3,240 GB over 30 days. This estimates the stream’s outbound volume; it is not a promise about how a provider counts or bills transfer. Confirm the plan’s transfer-accounting rules and allowance for your region.

Compare the estimate with the allowance on the specific plan. Continuous output can consume several terabytes in a month, so a low compute price alone does not tell you whether the instance is economical. Check for any applicable transfer overage as well as the monthly instance charge.

Check YouTube’s stream settings on either host
YouTube’s English encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. The cited guidance recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps. Treat that as a YouTube recommendation for that specific resolution, frame rate, and codec—not as a bitrate requirement for every stream.

Before relying on a setup for continuous streaming, YouTube advises testing and checking stream health. Test with audio and motion similar to the intended programme, and monitor the health indicators during the test. A successful test helps reveal configuration or connection problems; it is not an uptime guarantee for the PC, cloud host, or YouTube.
Make a fair cost and reliability decision
- Write down the actual stream settings. Record resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and whether the feed is already encoded or needs processing. Include the number of outputs if there is more than one.
- Estimate cloud transfer. Apply bitrate × 10.8 for approximate decimal GB per day, then multiply by 30 for a 30-day estimate. Compare it with the selected plan’s regional allowance and verify how transfer is counted.
- Calculate the PC’s incremental cost. Measure its power draw under the intended workload, estimate how many hours it will run, and apply your local electricity rate. Add any incremental internet cost rather than assuming the existing connection is free for this use.
- Check the home connection. Confirm that available upload capacity can support the chosen bitrate consistently and consider what happens during ISP, router, or power interruptions.
- Test the exact workflow. Run the intended encoder or relay, verify YouTube stream health, and test recovery from the failures you reasonably expect. Do not infer performance from a plan name or hardware specification alone.
Choose the spare PC if your measured electricity and connectivity costs make sense and you are comfortable maintaining a powered, connected machine. Choose a cloud VM if remote hosting and its network path fit your needs and the total instance-plus-transfer cost works. Neither option is categorically more reliable on the information available; the result depends on the actual setup and its recovery behavior.
