Short answer: Hetzner Cloud moves the encoder off your home power and internet, while a home PC gives you direct control and may make use of hardware you already own. Neither is automatically cheaper or outage-proof. Compare the exact cloud plan and outbound traffic with your PC’s measured power use, electricity price, internet service, and maintenance needs. For a managed alternative that avoids running an encoder yourself, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos looping on YouTube from the cloud.
What changes when the encoder moves to Hetzner Cloud?
A Hetzner Cloud server is a virtual machine running on physical servers. Hetzner offers shared-resource and dedicated-resource server types, with Cloud instances available in Europe, the USA, and Singapore. A Primary IP is required for a public network interface. The cloud moves the compute and its supporting infrastructure to a provider data center; it does not remove the need to configure, monitor, and recover your encoder software.
Hetzner says it will use commercially reasonable efforts to provide 99.9% monthly availability for each individual Cloud Server. That figure is subject to exclusions, including customer software or configuration failures and some network interruptions outside Hetzner’s reasonable control. It is a VM availability commitment, not a guarantee that the encoder-to-YouTube-to-viewer path will remain live.
Compare the trade-offs
| Factor | Hetzner Cloud | Home PC |
|---|---|---|
| Where encoding runs | Provider-hosted VM; shared and dedicated CPU options are available. | Your own computer, in your home environment. |
| Availability depends on | VM, configuration, encoder software, network path, and YouTube ingest. Hetzner’s 99.9% figure is a qualified monthly effort for an individual VM, not end-to-end streaming uptime. | PC condition, household power and cooling, internet connection, configuration, and your monitoring and recovery arrangements. No universal home-PC uptime figure is established. |
| Cost inputs | Server plan, IP, and outbound traffic. Billing continues while the resource exists, even if the server is powered off. | Hardware ownership, measured electricity use, local electricity tariff, internet plan, cooling, backup power, and maintenance. |
| Network and data transfer | Included traffic depends on server type and location; excess outbound traffic may be billed. | Depends on your upload capacity, data caps, and connection reliability. |
| Encoding capacity | Choose CPU and memory for your encoder settings. The reviewed documentation does not establish a minimum VM configuration for a particular live encode. | Check your actual CPU/GPU and encoder support against the settings you plan to use. |
| Archive | YouTube’s archive caveat applies; plan a separate recording if every hour must be preserved. | The same YouTube caveat applies. Local recording also uses storage and PC resources. |
How to compare the real monthly cost
For Hetzner Cloud
- Price the exact server type and region, plus any required IP and projected outbound transfer. Hetzner’s traffic documentation lists 20 TB included for CX, CPX, and CAX Cloud Servers in EU locations, but allowances differ by product and location; do not assume that quota applies to another plan or region.
- Include the time the resource exists, not just the hours it is switched on: Hetzner says billing continues while a resource exists, including when powered off.
- Check the current quote before ordering. Hetzner documentation says updated Cloud server pricing applies to new orders and rescales from 15 June 2026; existing servers are unaffected unless rescaled.
For a home PC
- Measure the computer’s actual power draw while encoding rather than using a generic PC estimate.
- Multiply its measured energy use over your intended operating period by your electricity tariff. Add any incremental cooling, backup-power, or hardware-maintenance costs that matter to your setup.
- Check whether your internet plan has a data cap and whether your sustained upload capacity is sufficient.
There is no defensible universal break-even figure from these inputs. Build both totals for the same time period using your actual home measurements and the exact Hetzner plan, region, IP, and traffic allowance.

Make sure the server or PC can encode the stream
YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingest. Its encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs, with frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Bitrate guidance varies by resolution, frame rate, and codec, so use YouTube’s current settings table for the format you actually plan to stream.
On a VM, the important question is whether the selected CPU and memory can sustain your chosen software-encoding workload; the documentation reviewed does not benchmark a particular plan against a resolution. On a home PC, test the existing CPU/GPU and encoder path with the intended output settings before relying on it continuously. A dedicated-CPU VM may be relevant for CPU-intensive software encoding, but no minimum configuration is established here.

Configure YouTube ingest and protect the stream key
- In YouTube’s live setup, obtain the stream URL and stream key, then enter them in the encoder running on your VM or home PC.
- Select RTMPS where available, then set a supported codec, resolution, frame rate, constant bitrate, and keyframe interval appropriate to YouTube’s current guidance.
- Start a test stream and confirm the encoder is sending and YouTube is receiving it before relying on the setup for a continuous channel.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not expose it in public screenshots, recordings, or shared configuration files; reset it in YouTube if it is disclosed.
- Monitor the encoder and have a recovery plan. YouTube’s live-stream tips recommend testing encoder failover; a single VM or PC should not be treated as a guarantee of uninterrupted service.
Plan separately for a 24/7 archive
A continuous live stream and a complete saved archive are separate requirements. YouTube says a stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving every hour matters, arrange a separate recording and storage plan rather than relying on the platform archive alone. Local recording needs enough storage and uses additional PC resources; on a cloud server, account for storage and transfer needs separately.
Choose based on your constraints
Choose Hetzner Cloud when
- You want the encoder away from household power, cooling, and internet interruptions.
- You can administer a server and have verified that the selected VM can sustain your chosen encoding settings.
- You have checked the current regional plan, traffic allowance, and billing implications.
Choose a home PC when
- Your existing hardware can sustain the encode and you can keep stable power and upload connectivity available.
- You have measured the running power cost and checked your internet plan and backup-power needs.
- You are prepared to monitor the machine and handle software, hardware, and connection failures.
For either approach, consider the cost and complexity of a backup encoder when an outage would matter. A UPS can help a home PC ride through some power interruptions, but it does not solve ISP outages or every outage duration.

Copyright and channel policy still apply
Whether you encode from a home PC, a VM, or a managed cloud service, YouTube’s live content must comply with its Community Guidelines and you must have the necessary rights for what you broadcast. Continuous channels using music, documentaries, or third-party footage should confirm that their licenses cover the intended live use. A technically stable stream does not establish copyright permission or guarantee monetization.
