The important first step is to confirm the Windows installation route and licensing directly with Hetzner and Microsoft: Hetzner’s Cloud documentation describes server creation and custom ISOs, but does not establish a supported or licensed Windows Cloud installation. Once that is resolved, the workflow is to provision the server, secure administration, install and configure the encoder, connect it to a YouTube Live event, and test and monitor the broadcast. A server and encoder can support an always-on setup, but do not guarantee an uninterrupted stream.
Decide whether a Windows server is the right way to keep the channel live
This approach is for a stream whose video and audio are generated by an encoder running on the server. You manage the Windows environment and encoder yourself, and the encoder sends the stream to YouTube. It is different from a cloud service that loops uploaded, prerecorded videos: that can keep prerecorded content playing, but it does not provide a live camera or arbitrary live desktop capture.
For a Hetzner Cloud Windows build, the key uncertainty is not whether a custom ISO can be attached; Hetzner documents that capability. It is whether the Windows image or manual installation route you intend to use is currently supported for Cloud, how licensing works, and whether additional Windows costs apply. Confirm those details with Hetzner and Microsoft before creating a server or paying for a license. Hetzner’s Windows Server add-on information for dedicated root servers should not be treated as confirmation of a Windows Cloud offer.
What to prepare before provisioning
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so complete it before a scheduled launch. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes these requirements.
- A Windows installation and licensing route that Hetzner confirms for the Cloud server type you plan to use.
- A way to administer Windows securely. Decide how you will reach the server before relying on remote desktop access, and verify both Windows and Hetzner firewall settings before exposing any administration service.
- An encoder and a tested video/audio source. YouTube identifies OBS as open-source software available at no charge, but current OBS Windows setup, unattended startup, and recovery settings are not established here. Check current OBS documentation for those specifics.
- Enough outbound network capacity for the encoder’s total stream bitrate, with headroom as described below.
Create and network the Hetzner Cloud server
Choose the server options
- In Hetzner Console, start the server creation workflow. Choose the server type, location, operating-system image, networking, firewall, and backup options. The available networking choices include public IPv4/IPv6, one public address, or no public address; a server without a public address needs to connect through a private Network. See Hetzner’s server creation guide.
- Do not assume that selecting an operating-system image or attaching a custom ISO resolves Windows support or licensing. Pause and verify the current Windows Cloud process with Hetzner and Microsoft first. Hetzner notes that changing the image after server creation erases the existing disk data, so do not treat an image change as a harmless experiment.
- Choose a backup approach appropriate to your recovery needs. A backup option is part of the creation workflow, but a backup does not keep an encoder running through an outage or replace a tested recovery procedure.
Plan firewall and remote access deliberately
Hetzner Cloud Firewall permits traffic matching defined rules. With no rules set, inbound traffic is blocked and outbound traffic is permitted, according to Hetzner’s firewall overview. Treat that as a starting behavior, not a complete Windows security configuration. Identify the access path you will use, define only the required network access, and verify the Windows firewall and remote administration configuration before making the server reachable. Do not expose an RDP endpoint casually; the Hetzner firewall documentation does not provide a full RDP-hardening recipe.

If you install from an ISO, verify Windows networking
Hetzner warns that manual Cloud ISO installations can have DHCP configuration problems and may require the default gateway to be configured manually. Its gateway article’s examples are Linux-specific; they are not Windows commands. Follow Windows-specific network instructions and confirm that the server has working connectivity after installation. Also check whether any temporary networking fix will persist after a restart: Hetzner notes that temporary route commands disappear on reboot unless the configuration is made persistent. Connect an encoder to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream or live event you intend to use. The channel must meet YouTube’s livestream eligibility requirements, and first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Leave time for activation rather than scheduling a first broadcast at the last minute. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain the workflow.
- Choose an encoder. YouTube defines an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming, and lists OBS as an open-source option available at no charge. Install the encoder using its current Windows-specific instructions. The available guidance here does not establish current OBS Windows settings, version requirements, or unattended recovery behavior, so do not copy a preset or automation recipe without checking current OBS documentation.
- Copy the stream server URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the corresponding encoder fields. Match the settings and event you selected, then start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview before announcing the broadcast.
- Protect the stream key as a password. If it is compromised, YouTube says it can be reset in Live Control Room; update the encoder with the replacement key before trying to stream again.
Size the connection and test before leaving it unattended
YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom over the total stream bitrate. For primary and backup encoders, its guidance is primary bitrate plus backup bitrate plus 20%. This is YouTube guidance, not a guarantee that a particular Hetzner server type, location, or network route will remain stable. Check the encoder’s configured total bitrate against the available upload capacity and leave the recommended margin. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

- Run a test broadcast and inspect the Live Control Room preview for audio and video problems before treating the stream as ready.
- Check that the stream can be opened on its YouTube watch page and on a mobile device, and monitor audio and video quality as YouTube recommends.
- If you configure a primary and backup encoder, test failover rather than assuming it works. YouTube suggests stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet and confirming that the player moves to the backup.
- Plan how you will notice a failure and restore service. A running virtual machine does not ensure that Windows, the encoder, the network path, or YouTube will remain available indefinitely.
Understand the limits of “always-on” and archiving
Here, “always-on” describes the intended operating pattern, not an uptime guarantee. VM maintenance, Windows updates, encoder crashes, network interruptions, or a YouTube-side interruption can stop a broadcast. The cited setup guidance does not establish an uptime figure for OBS on a Hetzner Windows Cloud VM.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish how a single longer 24/7 broadcast will be archived, nor does it guarantee that a continuous event will stay connected. If you need a permanent recording or a particular archive structure, verify YouTube’s current behavior and your event workflow instead of relying on one long event to serve as the archive.

Which approach fits: Windows hosting or cloud playback?
These choices solve different problems. A self-managed Windows encoder is the relevant route when you need to operate an encoder or source on a Windows desktop environment. Cloud playback fits a channel that wants uploaded prerecorded video looped continuously. YouTube identifies Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams; it is not a like-for-like replacement for arbitrary live capture from a Windows desktop. No comparative uptime or pricing figures are established here.
