Choose a home PC if your live production depends on equipment connected at home and you can maintain a stable, always-on setup. Consider Vultr if you want a remotely administered cloud host and can select and manage an instance that suits your encoder workload. Neither option is automatically more reliable, and the available evidence does not establish a universal computer build or prove that a particular Vultr plan can encode your stream. For a YouTube-only option that loops uploaded videos in the cloud without a computer running at home, StreamNeo is another route to consider.
How the two setups differ
| Factor | Home PC | Vultr Cloud Compute |
|---|---|---|
| Where the encoder runs | On a computer in your home or studio. | On a rented cloud instance that you administer remotely. |
| Connection to local equipment | Can work directly with locally attached audio/video gear, capture devices, or other peripherals. | Local peripherals may be harder to access from a remote host; the reviewed sources do not test specific remote capture workflows. |
| Network to YouTube | Uses your home internet upload connection. Sustained upload stability and your ISP terms matter. | Uses the instance’s network capacity and included transfer allowance. Check the selected plan’s current limits and billing. |
| Remote access | Depends on how you configure and secure your home computer. | Vultr documents SSH or its Console for Linux instances, and Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) for Windows instances. |
| Who handles failures | You need a way to notice and respond to computer, power, software, and internet failures. | You still need to monitor the encoder and YouTube stream and respond to failures; a cloud host does not remove that responsibility. |
YouTube’s encoder workflow supports software or hardware encoders and can connect external audio/video hardware. That makes a home PC a practical fit for a production built around gear already attached to the home setup, not a requirement for every channel. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion, previewing the stream, and monitoring stream health. See YouTube’s encoder workflow guidance.
Compare total cost, not just the advertised host price
Vultr’s listed examples
Vultr’s pricing page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists shared-vCPU Cloud Compute starting at $2.50 per month for 1 vCPU, 0.5 GB memory, 10 GB storage, and 0.50 TB bandwidth. Another listed example is $5 per month for 1 vCPU, 1 GB memory, 25 GB storage, and 1 TB bandwidth. These are price-page examples, not encoder recommendations: the available sources do not benchmark YouTube encoding on these instances. Vultr says location can affect pricing, Windows licenses cost extra, and its pricing page lists bandwidth overage at $0.01 per GB. Check the current plan and billing details before buying. Home-PC costs
If you already own a suitable computer, its purchase cost may be sunk, but continuous operation still has costs: electricity, internet service, and possibly backup equipment or a replacement machine. If you need to buy a computer, include that cost as well. Electricity prices and ISP costs vary, so there is no useful universal dollar comparison in the available evidence.

- 【USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑C: 10Gbps & Versatile Connectivity】The USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑C port on the KAMRUI P2 small pc supports 10Gbps data transfer speeds and can also output DisplayPort 1.4 video. Together with Gigabit LAN, Wi‑Fi, and Bluetooth, you get a fast, flexible, and productive connected environment – wired or wireless.
Calculate continuous transfer before choosing a cloud plan
A 24/7 stream sends data continuously. To estimate transfer, use the actual total outgoing bitrate and operating time; do not assume the plan’s monthly allowance is unlimited. As a rough decimal calculation, each 1 Mbps running continuously uses about 10.8 GB per day and 324 GB in 30 days, before protocol overhead. Multiply by your stream’s total bitrate in Mbps, then compare the result with the plan’s included transfer. For example, a 14 Mbps stream would use roughly 4,536 GB over 30 days by this estimate, far above the 0.50 TB and 1 TB examples above. Actual transfer can differ, so use this as a planning estimate and verify Vultr’s current billing rules.
Check upload capacity and encoder settings
Home connection: test sustained upload
Download speed alone does not establish whether a home PC can keep a live stream running. YouTube says the total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth, recommends 20% upload headroom, and warns that a network disruption can break a stream. Test sustained outbound performance at the location and time you expect to stream, and allow headroom above the combined video and audio bitrate. A connection that barely meets the encoder’s target leaves little margin for fluctuation. Read YouTube’s streaming tips.

Use YouTube’s encoder guidance as a starting point
YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest, supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR) with a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. For H.264, its current English settings page lists recommended ingest bitrates of 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Those are encoder ingest recommendations, not a measured minimum for your internet plan: leave YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom separately. The page’s displayed values can vary by locale or rendering, so check the current guidance for your stream before configuring it. YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
Choose based on your production and operating needs
A home PC is a better fit when
- Your production needs direct connections to local cameras, capture devices, or audio equipment.
- You already have a computer suitable for your encoder and can keep it, your internet connection, and any needed peripherals available.
- You can monitor the setup and respond if power, networking, the encoder, or YouTube interrupts the stream.
Vultr is worth considering when
- You want a remotely administered host rather than a computer that must remain on at home.
- Your workflow can run without direct access to locally attached hardware, or you have a separately workable remote production setup.
- You can choose an instance based on actual encoder requirements, calculate continuous transfer, and handle remote administration.
Do not infer encoding capability from a VM’s vCPU count alone. The cited Vultr material does not provide an encoder benchmark or minimum specification for a 24/7 YouTube stream, so test the actual workload before relying on a chosen instance.

Remote access does not replace monitoring or recovery
Vultr’s Cloud Compute FAQ, updated June 23, 2026, says Linux instances can be accessed through SSH or the Vultr Console; Windows instances use RDP. These are access methods, not a complete operating or recovery plan. Decide who will notice a stopped encoder, failed connection, or unhealthy YouTube stream and what they will do next. YouTube recommends testing, previewing, and monitoring stream health.
Vultr’s SLA concerns infrastructure within Vultr’s control; it excludes GPU instances and requires customers to request outage credits under its process. It should not be read as a guarantee that your encoder or YouTube Live will stay available end to end.
