Leslie Gordon Buxton, a Royal Navy veteran who served from D-Day through the Pacific campaign, left a firsthand account that now lives on in a roughly 24-minute online film. Toronto filmmaker Zach Dunn recorded Buxton in 2022 for Global Veteran Stories; Buxton died in 2025, aged 99.
Who was Leslie Gordon Buxton?
Born in Sheffield, England, on June 21, 1925, Buxton was conscripted into the Royal Navy in 1943, when he was 18. His factory and engineering experience led him to serve as an engine room artificer, first aboard HMS Ursa and later HMS Tyne. The Bradford News feature reports that he had risen to petty officer by age 19 and eventually became a chief petty officer responsible for the engine room.
His work took place out of sight below deck, in cramped engine spaces that Buxton recalled could reach 38°C. That perspective shaped his account of the Normandy landings.
What did Buxton do on D-Day?
On June 6, 1944, Buxton said he spent 36 continuous hours below deck and did not see the invasion itself. In the film, he put it plainly: “When anything was happening up top, I was down below, and for D-Day, I was 36 hours continuous down below, so I didn’t see a thing.”

His account describes a support role at sea, not fighting ashore: infantry and landing craft carried out the fighting on land while the ships supported the operation. The detail is a reminder that a D-Day story could be shaped by engine-room duty as much as by what happened on the beaches.
How did his service reach the Pacific?
Buxton’s wartime route did not end in Normandy. His ship travelled through the Mediterranean, the Suez Canal, the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea to Sri Lanka, then continued east to the Pacific campaign. The Bradford News account also recounts his recollection of Nagasaki after the atomic bombing.

After the war, Buxton moved to Canada in 1953. He worked in bridge construction and, according to the local-news feature’s account of his obituary, later became chief civil engineer for the Toronto Transit Commission. He died at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in Barrie on January 19, 2025, aged 99.
What is the film, and who made it?
Toronto filmmaker Zach Dunn interviewed Buxton in June 2022 for Global Veteran Stories. The resulting online film, titled D-Day to the Pacific at 19 Years Old | British WW2 Veteran Leslie Gordon Buxton tells his story, runs approximately 24 minutes. It condenses the interview and intersperses historical footage.

Dunn says the project is intended to bring firsthand testimony to schools, museums and communities. “My goal has been to share these firsthand accounts with schools, museums and communities to help educate the next generation about the incredible sacrifices made,” he said.

In a Bradford News feature published in 2026, Dunn said he had spent five years travelling across North America and interviewed more than 165 veterans from 21 allied countries who served in the Second World War, Korean War and Vietnam War. Those are figures attributed to Dunn in that report, rather than independently audited project totals.
He described the urgency behind the work this way: “This entire project is a race against the clock.” Dunn also hopes to record perspectives from less commonly discussed campaigns in Africa, India and China. Books or a television series are possibilities he has mentioned, not formats reported as currently available.

Buxton’s closing advice in the film is brief: “Don’t get into a war.” His testimony preserves one veteran’s view of service—from an unseen engine room on D-Day to the Pacific—and makes it available to audiences who can no longer hear the story from him in person.
