Short answer: MediaLive and MediaPackage can form part of a live-streaming workflow, but the AWS documentation cited here does not establish a native way to loop a finite video indefinitely into MediaLive, nor a documented MediaPackage-to-YouTube relay. You need a continuous upstream source and a separately validated path that sends an encoder feed to YouTube Live. MediaPackage is a downstream live origin and packager, not the loop player. If your goal is simply to keep an uploaded video playing on YouTube, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option; it does not use MediaLive or MediaPackage.
What each service does—and what it does not establish
MediaLive ingests an upstream video and audio source, transcodes it, and sends configured output groups to downstream systems. AWS describes sources such as a streaming camera or an event encoder. MediaPackage receives and packages a live output; AWS explicitly says the result of its MediaLive-to-MediaPackage output-group procedure is a live stream, not a VOD stream.
That division matters for a loop stream. The finite recording must be repeated or restarted upstream of the relevant live ingest. The cited AWS documentation describes MediaLive scheduling actions such as switching inputs and inserting image overlays, but does not confirm an action that plays a finite asset forever. It also does not document MediaPackage as a VOD loop source or as a relay to YouTube. See AWS’s MediaLive workflow documentation and its MediaPackage output result.
So the defensible design is a multi-service workflow, not a direct “MediaPackage loops a file to YouTube” recipe:

- A playback or source system repeats the recording and produces a continuous live feed.
- MediaLive ingests and transcodes that feed, then sends it to the configured downstream destination or destinations.
- A separate, verified encoder path sends a feed to YouTube using YouTube’s server URL and stream key.
The exact source-loop mechanism, the bridge to YouTube, and the resulting continuity must be validated for the chosen implementation. The AWS and YouTube pages cited below establish the individual service roles, not a complete AWS-branded loop-and-relay configuration.
Choose a MediaPackage ingest path
For a new MediaLive-to-MediaPackage workflow, AWS recommends MediaPackage v2 with CMAF Ingest. AWS also documents the older MediaPackage v1 HLS path. The options are not interchangeable in setup: v2 uses a channel group, channel, and ingest endpoint, while the documented v1 path uses a channel ID and HLS ingest.
| Path | What the cited AWS guidance establishes | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| MediaPackage v2 with CMAF Ingest | AWS-recommended path for new workflows; the managed MediaPackage output group handles destination connectivity. | Configure the region, channel group, channel, and ingest endpoint using the managed output group. |
| MediaPackage v1 with HLS ingest | Documented older path; configured using an HLS endpoint and channel ID. | Use only when the existing workflow requires it; do not copy its fields into a v2 setup. |
| Generic HLS/CMAF output group to MediaPackage v2 | Compatibility variants exist, but AWS says they do not provide the managed integration and may require migration for features that depend on it. | Prefer the recommended managed output group for a new workflow unless a compatibility requirement dictates otherwise. |
For the recommended v2 managed output group, follow the console’s channel-group, channel, and endpoint configuration. Do not treat a generic v1 HLS example as the v2 setup. AWS’s instructions are in Delivering to MediaPackage.

Plan the source loop before configuring the AWS outputs
First decide what will replay the file and how it will present uninterrupted video and audio to MediaLive. The reviewed AWS guidance does not establish whether a chosen finite-asset source can loop natively, whether a restart introduces a gap, or what additional playback or encoding service is required. Do not assume a MediaLive schedule action or a MediaPackage setting solves that part.
- Confirm the source system can repeat the asset continuously and provide the required live input to MediaLive.
- Test the transition from the end of the file back to the beginning. Listen for silence or an audio discontinuity and watch for a black frame, frozen picture, or reconnect.
- Determine what happens if the source process stops, its connection drops, or the asset becomes unavailable. Document how it will be restarted and who or what detects the failure.
- If using a standard two-pipeline MediaLive channel, plan for corresponding upstream and downstream arrangements. AWS describes two pipelines as a resiliency arrangement, not a substitute for a reliable source.
These are implementation checks, not a verified AWS asset-loop recipe. Validate the source design and recovery behavior against the current capabilities of the selected systems before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.
Configure MediaLive to deliver to MediaPackage
- Select the MediaPackage output group. For a new v2 workflow, choose the managed output group for MediaPackage v2 with CMAF Ingest rather than assuming a generic HLS output group is equivalent.
- Choose the destination. Set the applicable region and select the MediaPackage channel group, channel, and ingest endpoint in the configuration flow.
- Match the pipeline arrangement. In the documented mapping, MediaLive pipeline 0 maps to the first ingest endpoint. For a standard two-pipeline channel, pipeline 1 maps to the second. AWS says a standard MediaLive channel needs one MediaPackage channel in this arrangement.
- Keep the workflow live. MediaPackage’s output-group result is a live stream, not a VOD asset. It does not provide the missing finite-file replay function.
- Verify the output before connecting the audience workflow. Confirm that the intended live output is present and that the source remains continuous through at least one file boundary. The AWS documentation establishes the output mapping, but not a universal console procedure for every account or source design.
AWS says the documented v2 HLS-endpoint example does not use user credentials. For the recommended managed output group, use its channel-group/channel/endpoint configuration rather than transplanting credential instructions from a generic v1 example. See MediaLive containers, protocols, and downstream systems for the supported output-system context.

Connect an encoder feed to YouTube Live
YouTube is a separate destination. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the live stream, then enter YouTube’s stream URL and stream key in the encoder that will send the feed. YouTube describes the key as the means by which the encoder knows where to send the feed and YouTube accepts it. Treat it like a password: do not put it in public examples, screenshots, or exposed logs. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings.
Do not assume that the MediaPackage output itself can be entered as a YouTube relay destination. The available service documentation does not show MediaPackage forwarding its output to YouTube, and the cited AWS output-protocol page does not establish the complete bridging arrangement. Confirm which component acts as the YouTube encoder and how it receives the live feed before building the production path. Keep the stream key private and use YouTube’s current Live Control Room instructions for the stream selected.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure form of RTMP, for supported RTMP encoder workflows. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and frame rates up to 60 fps. MediaLive’s cited RTMP/RTMPS output table lists H.264 video and AAC audio. Choose settings supported by both the actual encoder/output path and YouTube; a codec appearing in YouTube’s list does not mean every MediaLive output group can produce it.

| YouTube target format | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate | Use |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | Use this row only when the intended encode is H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps. |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | Use this row only when the intended encode is H.264 at 1080p and 60 fps. |
These are YouTube’s recommended ingestion bitrates, not a universal setting or a guarantee of viewer-side quality. For another resolution, frame rate, or codec, select the corresponding row in YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions table. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Set the encoder’s keyframe interval accordingly, and check that the full chain accepts the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, audio format, and bitrate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the full chain and operate it
- Test realistic material. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream. A static test pattern will not reveal every issue in a documentary with motion, music, narration, or scene changes.
- Check the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that YouTube receives a picture and sound before treating the broadcast as ready.
- Review stream-health messages. Resolve warnings or errors surfaced in Live Control Room, then confirm the output again after a source restart or file-boundary transition.
- Monitor during broadcast. Check sound and picture, including whether the loop transition stays clean and whether the source or encoder has disconnected.
- Verify the watch page. Confirm that the intended audience can open the correct YouTube live page. A healthy feed in an encoder alone does not prove the public watch page is set up as intended.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is a duration threshold, not a promise that a single, longer continuous event will remain one unbroken archive. For operational testing and further live-streaming guidance, see YouTube live streaming tips.
Copyright, documentary rights, and monetization checks
Before looping a documentary, confirm that you have the rights needed to broadcast every element in it, including footage, music, narration, photographs, and any third-party clips. Permission to watch, download, or use a file privately does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it live. A technical loop does not resolve rights issues or determine whether a channel qualifies for monetization; check YouTube’s current policies and any license terms that apply to your material. Keep records of permissions and licenses so you can respond if a rights holder or platform raises a claim.

Troubleshoot the failure by layer
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The loop stops or has a gap at the end of the recording | Upstream playback/source | Verify that the chosen source actually repeats the file and maintains a continuous feed. The cited AWS documentation does not confirm a native MediaLive finite-file loop. |
| MediaLive has input but MediaPackage has no expected output | MediaLive output-group configuration | Confirm the selected MediaPackage generation, output-group type, region, channel group/channel, ingest endpoint, and pipeline-to-endpoint mapping. |
| YouTube does not receive the feed | YouTube encoder path | Confirm that the correct YouTube stream URL and key are configured in the component sending the feed. Check the key privately in Live Control Room; do not expose it while troubleshooting. |
| YouTube reports an ingest or quality issue | Encoder settings and network path | Compare codec, CBR, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio format, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s applicable settings guidance and the actual output capabilities. |
| Picture is present but audio is missing or poor | Source, encode, and test material | Check audio at the source and the encoder output, confirm a compatible AAC or MP3 configuration, and test with the program’s real audio content. |
| Feed returns after a drop but the program has a visible interruption | Recovery behavior across services | Observe where continuity breaks: source, MediaLive, MediaPackage, encoder bridge, or YouTube ingest. The cited documentation does not specify end-to-end recovery timing for this combined design; test the actual configuration and establish an operational restart procedure. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep an uploaded recording or playlist live on YouTube rather than build an AWS broadcast pipeline, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service. Upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera, and it is not a MediaLive/MediaPackage integration.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs in the cloud, so your computer can be off.
- Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one price per slot with no quality tiers or re-encode.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does MediaPackage loop a video file for YouTube Live?
No such function is established in the cited AWS documentation. MediaPackage is downstream of a live source in this workflow; arrange and verify the repeat behavior upstream.
Can MediaPackage send its output directly to YouTube?
The cited AWS and YouTube documentation does not describe MediaPackage as a YouTube relay. Confirm a separate encoder path that sends the feed using YouTube’s stream URL and key.
Will a stream longer than 12 hours be archived as one video?
YouTube’s cited encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not establish that a longer event will remain one unbroken archive.
