DigitalOcean pools Droplet transfer allowances across a team and charges for additional outbound transfer; Lightsail includes a region-dependent allowance with qualifying outbound overage after it is exceeded. The right choice depends on those particulars, not the provider name.

The DigitalOcean bandwidth price and network limits are provider-published figures, not a promise of performance for a particular stream. AWS transfer allowance and overage terms depend on the selected bundle and region, so check the current pricing and transfer pages before provisioning.
Estimate the bandwidth your stream will use
For a constant-bitrate stream, a useful planning estimate is 10.8 Ă— bitrate in Mbps = decimal GB per 30-day month. This calculation multiplies the bitrate by the seconds in 30 days. It excludes protocol overhead and any additional stream or backup feed, and provider billing units or allowance rules may differ.

The bitrate examples are from YouTube’s encoder settings guidance; actual settings depend on the content and configuration. Include audio if it is additional to the video bitrate, plus transport overhead, restarts, and any redundant feed. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend calculating upload capacity from the primary stream plus backup stream plus 20%; do not provision a network link right at the nominal bitrate.

Compare allowances the same way
- Choose the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate you intend to send to YouTube.
- Calculate one stream’s estimated monthly outbound volume using the formula above.
- Add any separate backup feed or other outbound traffic from the same resources.
- For DigitalOcean, confirm the team’s remaining pooled transfer allowance and estimate any excess at $0.01 per GiB.
- For Lightsail, check the bundle’s transfer allowance for the chosen region and the current terms for eligible outbound overage.
These inputs decide which plan costs less. A low monthly bill for compute can be offset by traffic beyond the included allowance; a large allowance is of little value if the selected instance cannot sustain the required encoding workload.
Choose a plan for encoding or relaying
If the server encodes the video
Encoding converts source media into the format and bitrate sent to YouTube. It can demand sustained CPU capacity, especially at higher resolutions or frame rates. Lightsail offers compute-optimized bundles described for compute-intensive tasks such as video encoding, while DigitalOcean offers multiple Droplet plan types. Those product descriptions do not establish that a specific plan will encode your video successfully at a particular resolution. Test your exact encoder, codec, settings, and source under sustained load before relying on it for a continuous channel.

If the server relays an already encoded feed
A relay forwards media that another system has encoded. It generally avoids the encoding workload, but still requires sufficient network capacity and a stable source connection. Confirm whether your chosen software is relaying, remuxing, or transcoding; those terms imply different work. Do not pick a VM from vCPU count alone or treat DigitalOcean’s published throughput ceilings as a per-stream guarantee.
Check the whole path, not just the instance label
- Measure the sustained CPU and memory use of your actual software and settings.
- Check that the source can supply the stream continuously and that the VM can reach YouTube reliably.
- Allow network headroom, including for a backup feed if you operate one.
- Set up process supervision, alerts or monitoring, and a recovery plan for encoder, source, or network failure.
Configure the YouTube stream and protect the archive
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Use the ingest protocol and encoder settings from YouTube’s current encoder guidance, including the recommended bitrate range for your resolution and frame rate. Keep the stream key private, enter it only in the trusted encoder or relay configuration, and replace it if you believe it has been exposed.

Before scheduling a continuous broadcast, verify that the channel is eligible: YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Preview and monitor the encoder stream rather than treating a successfully started server process as proof that YouTube is receiving a usable signal. YouTube’s operational guidance is at YouTube Help.
Do not treat the live stream as your only archive
YouTube warns that “If your live stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” A 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be assumed to produce one complete replay. Keep a separate local or otherwise independent recording if you need an archive, and design recording, segmenting, and restart handling separately from keeping the live broadcast on air. Respect copyright and channel rules
A cloud VM does not grant rights to the video, music, or other material you broadcast. Confirm that you have the necessary rights and follow YouTube’s live-streaming and monetization policies. Repeatedly looping or reusing material is not, by itself, proof that a channel qualifies for monetization; assess the channel and content against YouTube’s current rules rather than assuming that uninterrupted uptime creates eligibility.

Both providers supply infrastructure, not a complete broadcast-operations guarantee. If the encoder exits, the source file ends, the VM reboots, credentials fail, or YouTube disconnects the ingest, the stream can stop even while the instance remains billable. YouTube advises testing and monitoring the encoder stream. Build and test recovery behavior instead of assuming the provider will restart your broadcast automatically.

- Use a process supervisor or equivalent mechanism to restart a failed encoder or relay process.
- Monitor both the process and the YouTube ingest, with an alert path you will actually see.
- Test what happens when the source ends, the connection drops, and the VM restarts.
- Keep a separate recording if retaining the broadcast matters; a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube.
Which is cheaper for a 24/7 YouTube stream?
There is no evidence-based universal winner without a bitrate, region, encoding method, and candidate plans. Compare a specific Droplet with a specific Lightsail bundle under the same assumptions: monthly compute charge, included outbound allowance, expected eligible overage, and workload capacity.
