Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11If FFmpeg keeps disconnecting from a YouTube live stream on a DigitalOcean Droplet, first identify which layer is failing: the YouTube ingest address and protocol, FFmpeg itself, the Droplet’s network, or an outbound firewall rule. There is no universal reconnect flag that fixes every case. Capture the exact error and command (with the stream key redacted), then work through the checks below.
Why does my FFmpeg YouTube stream keep disconnecting?
A disconnect can mean different things: FFmpeg may exit, its connection to YouTube may be rejected or reset, or the Droplet may lose access to the destination. The symptom alone does not identify the cause. Before changing settings, collect enough information to distinguish these cases.
- Record the installed FFmpeg version and build, using
ffmpeg -version. - Save the complete command and configuration, but replace the stream key with a redaction such as
[REDACTED]. Treat the key as a credential; do not publish it in logs or support requests. - Copy the exact FFmpeg error lines and note the time of the failure, how often it occurs, and whether FFmpeg exits or remains running.
- Note whether the same input works locally or from another host, and whether the problem affects only this stream or other outbound connections too.
This evidence helps separate a process or input failure from an ingest, network, or firewall issue. No specific command, log, Droplet configuration, or root cause is established for every installation.
Is the YouTube ingest address and protocol correct?
Compare the configured address and stream name with the values YouTube provides for the live stream. The YouTube Live Streaming API documents primary and backup addresses and separate RTMP and RTMPS fields, including ingestionAddress, backupIngestionAddress, rtmpsIngestionAddress, and rtmpsBackupIngestionAddress. Use the address that matches your intended protocol and stream configuration rather than a hostname copied from another setup. See Google’s LiveStreams API documentation.

Depending on the encoder, the stream URL and stream name may need to be joined as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Check the format expected by your FFmpeg output and compare it with the values YouTube issued.
If you use RTMPS, verify TLS details
- Use an
rtmpsURL for an endpoint that expects RTMPS; do not send cleartext RTMP to an RTMPS endpoint. - Confirm the endpoint and application path are correct, and that the connection reaches port
443. - Ensure TLS Server Name Indication (SNI) uses the server hostname. YouTube says the hostname is needed for authentication, even though it is not strictly required to begin a TLS connection.
A protocol mismatch can produce an SSL error or an unhelpful timeout. A wrong endpoint, port, or SNI can also cause TLS errors. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide explains these connection requirements and troubleshooting points.

Do not switch protocols without weighing the trade-offs
YouTube supports RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingest. RTMPS encrypts the RTMP connection and is an option for normal or lower-latency streaming. HLS and DASH are encrypted, segment-based alternatives that support additional codecs but generally introduce more latency. Switching makes sense only if your encoder supports the alternative and its latency and delivery behavior suit the stream. Check YouTube’s ingestion protocol comparison before changing the output protocol.
Which FFmpeg reconnect options work for a YouTube live stream?
Match reconnect advice to the protocol that is actually failing. FFmpeg documents options such as -reconnect in its HTTP protocol documentation. Those options describe HTTP behavior; they do not establish that the same flags reconnect an RTMP or RTMPS publishing connection to YouTube.

For HTTP inputs or outputs where the installed FFmpeg build and command support the documented behavior, the HTTP options include:
reconnect: retry after a disconnect before EOF.reconnect_at_eof: treat EOF as an error, which can be useful for live or endless streams.reconnect_on_network_error: retry TCP or TLS connection errors.reconnect_on_http_error: retry selected HTTP status codes.reconnect_streamed: allow reconnects for streamed, non-seekable inputs.reconnect_delay_max,reconnect_max_retries, andreconnect_delay_total_max: limit retry delay, count, or total duration.respect_retry_after: honor an HTTPRetry-Afterresponse when applicable.
Confirm that the relevant input or output uses HTTP and that your installed build supports the options before adding them. Do not assume that placing -reconnect 1 in an RTMP/RTMPS publishing command will keep the YouTube connection alive. The right response to a failed publisher depends on the command, protocol, and failure mode; where recovery must continue after FFmpeg exits, process supervision is a separate concern from an individual protocol’s reconnect options.

Could a DigitalOcean firewall be blocking the stream?
Check both the Cloud Firewall attached to the Droplet and any host firewall. They are separate controls: a permissive setting in one does not override a rule in the other. DigitalOcean Cloud Firewalls block traffic that is not permitted by their rules; if no outbound rules are configured, outbound traffic is not permitted. Review the rules for the destination and protocol or port required by the active YouTube ingest endpoint, rather than opening unrelated inbound ports. DigitalOcean explains the distinction and troubleshooting approach in its firewall troubleshooting guide and Cloud Firewall rules documentation.
Host rules can conflict with Cloud Firewall rules. On an Ubuntu Droplet, inspect UFW with sudo ufw status verbose; for iptables, DigitalOcean’s example inspection command is iptables -L. These commands help you review policy; do not replace firewall rules wholesale on a production server. DigitalOcean describes UFW as a user-friendly host-firewall interface and provides more diagnostic context in its firewall troubleshooting guide.

How do you check the Droplet’s network and traffic at the failure time?
Run basic checks and compare their timing with the FFmpeg logs. DigitalOcean suggests ip -br a to inspect interface state and ping to test reachability. Ping uses ICMP, however, and a Cloud Firewall may block it; a failed ping by itself does not prove that the Droplet’s outbound route to YouTube is down. Pair such checks with FFmpeg’s error output and checks relevant to the actual destination. See DigitalOcean’s Droplet network troubleshooting guide.
DigitalOcean Monitoring separates public and private traffic and inbound and outbound bandwidth. For a Droplet sending video to an external ingest server, public outbound traffic is the relevant graph. Look for changes around the time of a disconnect, but do not treat a graph as proof of which service or rule caused it. Alerts require the DigitalOcean metrics agent. DigitalOcean’s Droplet Metrics documentation describes the graphs; its alerts guidance says the agent needs outbound TCP ports 80 and 443 to report. That agent traffic is separate from FFmpeg’s YouTube stream traffic.
What should you change after identifying the failing layer?
- Address or authentication mismatch: replace the configured ingest address and stream name with the values for the active YouTube stream, and verify the output protocol. Keep the stream key private.
- RTMPS or TLS error: check the RTMPS endpoint, URL path, port 443, and hostname used for SNI. Do not use cleartext RTMP against an RTMPS endpoint.
- FFmpeg exits or reports an input error: inspect the full log around the first error and determine whether the input ended or failed. HTTP reconnect options are relevant only when the affected operation uses the documented HTTP protocol behavior.
- Outbound connectivity fails: inspect Cloud Firewall egress rules and host-firewall policy for the actual destination and protocol or port. Avoid broad rule changes that are unrelated to the failure.
- Only monitoring alerts fail: check that the metrics agent is installed and able to report over outbound TCP 80 and 443; this is distinct from YouTube ingest connectivity.
- Evidence remains inconclusive: preserve the command with secrets redacted, exact error lines, timestamps, FFmpeg build, endpoint protocol, and relevant firewall and traffic observations. Those specifics are needed to choose a recovery approach rather than adding flags by guesswork.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel rather than maintaining an FFmpeg process on a Droplet, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos or playlists to YouTube. The setup is: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube, not from a camera or to other platforms. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
