There is no single MediaPackage HLS preset that makes a YouTube channel run 24/7. Configure MediaPackage to package the incoming feed, then configure a separate sender or encoder to deliver that feed to YouTube using YouTube’s ingestion URL and stream key. Keep segment durations aligned with the input cadence, treat the manifest window as a rolling playback lookback—not the channel’s runtime—and test the complete path in YouTube before relying on it.
Understand the two parts of the pipeline
A MediaPackage HLS endpoint produces a packaged HLS output for playback or downstream use. YouTube’s HLS setup, by contrast, configures a sending component with YouTube’s HLS ingestion URL and a stream key. Do not assume the MediaPackage playback URL is itself a YouTube ingest destination. You need a component that can read the MediaPackage output and send it to YouTube using the selected protocol. See AWS’s MediaPackage v2 origin endpoint guide and YouTube’s HLS setup instructions.
Identify the MediaPackage generation first
Classic MediaPackage and MediaPackage v2 use different interfaces and configuration models. The classic guide describes HLS packager fields; v2 describes origin endpoints, segment settings, and manifest configuration. Confirm the service generation and endpoint type deployed in your account, then use the matching guide rather than transferring field names or limits between versions. The classic HLS packager settings and v2 endpoint settings are not interchangeable by assumption.
Choose the YouTube ingest protocol separately
YouTube documents both RTMPS for the general encoder workflow and HLS ingestion for an HLS-capable sender or a workflow that requires it. Pick the protocol the sending component actually supports, then create or select a YouTube stream key configured for that protocol. YouTube generally recommends RTMPS; its encoder settings guide and HLS instructions describe the respective workflows.

Choose settings by MediaPackage version
| Setting or behavior | Classic MediaPackage HLS | MediaPackage v2 |
|---|---|---|
| Segment duration | Set an input-aligned duration or a multiple of the input segment duration. If the requested value differs, MediaPackage rounds output segments to the nearest multiple of the input duration. AWS classic guide | Segment duration is configurable; AWS also documents rounding to source-fragment multiples. Match or multiply the input cadence, then inspect actual manifests and playback. AWS v2 guide |
| Live playlist or manifest window | A live playlist window setting is available; a numeric maximum is not established in the cited classic guide. | The maximum manifest window documented by AWS is 900 seconds (15 minutes). It controls recent content exposed in the rolling manifest, not how long the channel can run. AWS v2 guide |
| Program date and time tags | Not stated in the cited classic settings guidance. | Optional for ordinary HLS when wall-clock timing or timeline seeking/display is useful. AWS says v2 requires these tags for low-latency HLS. AWS v2 guide |
| Manifest naming | Not stated here; check the classic endpoint configuration in use. | The manifest name is appended to the endpoint path, and MediaPackage adds an extension such as .m3u8. A manifest configuration name can override the origin endpoint name. Ensure the final path matches what the sender reads. AWS v2 API reference |
| Time-shift/startover window | Not stated in the cited classic settings guidance. | A separate startover window supports time-shifted viewing; AWS documents a maximum of 1,209,600 seconds (14 days). This is distinct from the manifest window and should only be configured when catch-up or startover is needed. AWS v2 guide |
Set segment duration to the source cadence
Do not pick a segment duration solely because it seems suitable for YouTube. Begin with the segment or fragment cadence arriving at MediaPackage. Set the output duration to match it or to a multiple of it. AWS documents rounding when the requested output duration does not align with the input cadence; the resulting segments may therefore not have the exact duration you entered. Check the produced manifest and playback rather than assuming the configured value is the delivered value.
There is no universal fixed segment duration established for every 24/7 YouTube pipeline in the cited guidance. The right value depends on the input cadence, the MediaPackage version and endpoint, the sender’s expectations, and the latency goal. Coordinate the setting across those components and test representative content, including motion and audio.

Set a rolling manifest window, not a 24-hour runtime
The playlist or manifest window determines how much recent content is listed for playback. It does not determine whether the channel operates continuously. For MediaPackage v2, AWS documents a maximum manifest window of 900 seconds (15 minutes). A continuously refreshed live manifest can serve a stream that runs much longer than its lookback window. The cited classic guide exposes a live playlist window but does not establish the same numeric maximum, so verify the limit for the classic service and endpoint you use.
Do not confuse that window with v2’s separate startover window. The latter is for time-shifted viewing and has a documented maximum of 1,209,600 seconds (14 days). If viewers do not need catch-up or startover, do not size or enable it merely to keep the live channel on air.

Configure the sender and YouTube stream key
- Choose the sending component and protocol. It must read the MediaPackage HLS output and send to YouTube using the chosen ingestion protocol. Confirm HLS support if you intend to use YouTube HLS; otherwise follow the RTMPS workflow supported by your encoder. MediaPackage’s supported codecs do not by themselves establish end-to-end compatibility.
- Create or select the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, set up the stream and select or create a stream key for the intended ingestion protocol. Use YouTube’s current stream URL and key management instructions and, for HLS, its HLS setup guide.
- Enter the destination on the sender. Configure the sending component with the YouTube ingestion URL and matching key—not merely the MediaPackage playback URL. Keep the MediaPackage manifest path configured as the sender’s source.
- Match encoder settings to the selected YouTube workflow. YouTube’s encoder guidance gives codec- and resolution-specific bitrate tables and recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding 4 seconds, for the encoder settings it describes. Use the current table for the selected protocol, resolution, frame rate, and codec; do not treat one bitrate as universal. Check the same page for audio and other encoder requirements.
- Test before making it continuous. Run a representative feed with audio and movement, confirm the sender is reading the expected manifest, and check YouTube’s stream health messages. A valid MediaPackage manifest alone does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring health in its encoder settings guidance.
Verify codecs and end-to-end compatibility
AWS lists H.264 or H.265 video and AAC audio among supported live HLS output combinations in its live supported codecs and input types documentation. That is a MediaPackage capability, not a guarantee that every combination is accepted by the selected YouTube ingest protocol or sender. Check YouTube’s current encoder requirements for the chosen protocol, and verify the complete chain with a test stream before production.
Plan the 24/7 lifecycle and archive separately
A rolling HLS manifest does not itself schedule restarts, manage a YouTube event, or guarantee an uninterrupted archive. YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The cited guidance does not establish a single uninterrupted archive guarantee for a stream exceeding 12 hours. If the channel runs continuously, decide whether it needs scheduled events, planned restarts, or a separate archive workflow, and verify current YouTube behavior for that plan. See YouTube’s encoder stream setup guide.

Troubleshoot by checking the whole chain
- YouTube receives no feed: Confirm the sender is using YouTube’s ingestion URL and a key created for the same protocol. A MediaPackage playback URL is not a substitute for YouTube’s ingest destination.
- The sender cannot read the source: Check the final MediaPackage manifest path, including the v2 manifest name and extension, and confirm the sender is pointed at that path. Inspect the manifest directly and verify the sender can retrieve its segments.
- Segments behave unexpectedly: Compare configured segment duration with the input cadence. AWS rounds mismatched output durations to source-aligned multiples, so inspect actual segment boundaries and manifest entries.
- Video or audio is rejected or unhealthy: Verify the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings against YouTube’s current requirements for the selected protocol. Do not infer YouTube compatibility solely from AWS codec support.
- The live view has less or more recent content than expected: Check the rolling manifest window. On MediaPackage v2, the documented maximum is 900 seconds; this window is not the total operating duration. Check startover settings separately if catch-up is required.
- Playback timing or seeking is unsuitable: If wall-clock presentation or timeline seeking is needed, evaluate program date/time tags for v2. For low-latency HLS, AWS says those tags are required.
- The 24/7 archive is incomplete: Review event duration and archive expectations independently of MediaPackage. The cited YouTube guidance covers automatic archiving under 12 hours, not a single uninterrupted archive guarantee beyond that duration.
