A DigitalOcean Droplet’s listed starting price is not the whole cost of running a 24/7 YouTube stream: outbound transfer can add more than the Droplet itself. DigitalOcean lists Basic Droplets from $4 per month, with 500 GiB of transfer on the entry plan; a steady 6 Mbps stream sends about 1,810 GiB in a 30-day month, implying roughly $13.10 in excess-transfer charges if that is the only workload using the allowance. That makes the illustrative total at least $17.10 before taxes and other charges, assuming the entry plan and no other team traffic. DigitalOcean’s pricing page and transfer documentation provide the inputs; actual billing depends on your plan and pooled team usage.
What a 24/7 stream costs on a Droplet
Budget for two parts: the selected Droplet’s compute price and any outbound transfer beyond the allowance available to your DigitalOcean team. The entry Basic plan is listed at $4 per month with 500 GiB of transfer, but higher plans have different resources and allowances. Do not assume every Droplet has 500 GiB included. DigitalOcean’s current Droplet pricing lists plan details, including CPU-Optimized Droplets that it says suit workloads such as media streaming.
DigitalOcean’s documentation sets additional outbound transfer at $0.01 per GiB and says inbound transfer is free. Transfer allowance and usage are pooled across the team, counted for public-interface traffic, and do not roll over. So the estimate below assumes the Droplet is the only consumer of the allowance and that all 500 GiB are available to it. If other team resources use transfer, recalculate using the remaining team allowance. See DigitalOcean’s transfer pricing documentation.
Estimate monthly transfer from your streaming bitrate
For a steady bitrate, estimate transfer as bitrate in bits per second Ă— seconds streamed Ă· 8, then convert bytes to GiB. The figures below use a 30-day month (2,592,000 seconds) and are arithmetic estimates, not DigitalOcean quotes. They exclude protocol overhead and bitrate fluctuations.

The bitrate recommendations are from YouTube’s live encoder guidance; transfer and excess charges are calculated estimates using DigitalOcean’s published $0.01/GiB rate. The rows illustrate how resolution, frame rate, and codec affect the bill; they are not a claim that every encoder or workflow should use those settings. For example, a constant 6 Mbps stream produces about 1,810 GiB of monthly transfer, around 1,310 GiB over a fully available 500 GiB allowance, or about $13.10 in excess charges. Add the selected Droplet price to the applicable transfer charge.
DigitalOcean says Droplets moved to per-second billing on January 1, 2026, with a 60-second minimum; Basic bundled plans have a monthly cap. Since a 24/7 stream runs continuously, budget using the displayed monthly plan price rather than treating it as a short-lived job. Tax treatment and account billing configuration can change the final bill.

Choose a Droplet for the encoder, not just the entry price
The transfer arithmetic is driven mainly by outgoing bitrate. Compute choice depends on what the server must encode: a pre-encoded feed may have different CPU demands from live transcoding or other processing. Compare plan price, CPU resources, included transfer, and your expected bitrate together; the pricing page lists higher Basic tiers and CPU-Optimized options, but it does not establish one universally correct plan for every streaming workflow.
DigitalOcean lists Bangalore among its data-center locations, which gives India-based operators a nearby deployment option. That listing alone does not establish the best route to YouTube’s ingest service or guarantee a particular latency or reliability. Test the selected region and ingest endpoint with your real stream, and monitor stream health. Do not count viewer playback as Droplet egress in this calculation: the Droplet’s outbound transfer here is its contribution to the stream sent to YouTube.

Configure YouTube output and protect the stream key
- Check current encoder guidance in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s published live guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265, or AV1 and provides recommended bitrate examples by resolution and frame rate. Confirm the current options shown in your control room before configuring the encoder. YouTube encoder settings
- Set a constant bitrate and keyframes. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Leave network headroom rather than provisioning exactly to the video bitrate: YouTube’s streaming tips advise 20% upload-bandwidth room. - Enter the stream key in the encoder and keep it private. YouTube’s setup uses a stream key to connect the encoder to the live stream. Treat it as a credential; if it is exposed, rotate it in the live-stream settings. Manage live stream settings
- Test before relying on continuous operation. Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and confirm the Droplet remains connected to the chosen ingest endpoint. The recommended bitrate is not the entire network load, and actual transfer can vary with encoder behavior and overhead.

Costs to verify before you deploy
- Use the selected Droplet’s displayed monthly compute price and its actual included transfer, not the entry plan’s allowance by default.
- Apply the team’s pooled transfer allowance once, after accounting for other resources that use it.
- Recalculate with the actual outgoing bitrate and billing period; the examples assume 30 days at a constant rate and exclude overhead, variability, and taxes.
- Do not assume Bangalore is optimal for your YouTube ingest route; test the region and endpoint you plan to use.
