To broadcast videos stored in Amazon S3 as a YouTube Live playlist, you need a playback and encoding process: S3 stores the files, while a process on EC2 (or a suitable AWS media service) reads and sequences them, encodes a live feed, and sends it to YouTube using your stream URL and stream key. An S3 object URL by itself is not a live broadcast.
The practical DIY route is to make your source files available to a playback/encoder process on EC2, configure that process to sequence or loop them, and verify the incoming feed in YouTube Live Control Room before making the event public. The exact playlist setup depends on the tool you choose; do not assume a universal playlist command or format.
Choose the right architecture
There are two distinct AWS patterns to consider. One uses an EC2-hosted playback and encoding process to send a playlist directly to YouTube. The other uses AWS MediaLive with S3 inputs as part of an AWS media pipeline. AWS’s S3 live-streaming reference architecture uses MediaLive to ingest and transcode a feed, S3 to store encoded segments, and CloudFront to deliver them to viewers; that is not necessarily a turnkey pipeline for sending a playlist of S3 files to YouTube.

Build an EC2-hosted playlist stream
1. Keep the source clips in S3
Store the videos in a private bucket unless you have a separate reason to make them public. Give the EC2 playback process access through an appropriately scoped AWS identity. Do not make a private bucket public just to make a playlist work. The required permissions depend on the playback tool and how it accesses the objects, so check current AWS security guidance for your implementation.

2. Choose how EC2 will read and play the files
Select a playback and encoding tool that can either read the S3 objects through an authenticated AWS client or play local copies staged on the instance. It must also support the sequence and looping behavior you intend. The official documentation cited for this workflow does not establish one universal EC2 playlist format, command, or instance configuration.
Before relying on the setup, test the behavior that matters for your channel: clip order, transitions, audio continuity, loop handling, and what happens if a file cannot be read or the playback process restarts. These capabilities depend on the tool you select.
3. Get the YouTube ingest details
In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key for your broadcast and enter them in the encoder. YouTube describes the key as a password-like credential used to accept the feed. Restrict access to it, and reset it in Live Control Room if you believe it has been exposed.

4. Configure the encoder and test the incoming feed
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you choose. YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS for the relevant ingest mode, H.264 as an available video codec, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. The recommended bitrate depends on the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the applicable row in the live settings table rather than treating one bitrate as universal.

Set the output to match the quality your EC2 process can sustain, then preview the incoming signal in Live Control Room before starting the public event. Test the stream and monitor audio and video quality; YouTube’s live-streaming tips also recommend configuring the encoder ahead of time.
5. Check your rights and channel requirements
Having a video in S3 does not by itself establish that you have the rights to broadcast it. Confirm that you have permission for the video, music, images, and any other material in every clip. Also check YouTube’s current live-streaming, copyright, and monetization requirements for your channel and content. A technically valid feed does not guarantee that a channel or stream meets those rules.

AWS documents MP4 and HLS pulled from S3 as MediaLive input options, but that fact alone does not establish that a particular MediaLive configuration will produce the YouTube playlist stream you want. Before choosing it, confirm the current input, output, and destination configuration against your requirements. Do not confuse S3’s role as storage for encoded segments in the AWS reference architecture with reading a playlist of source videos and sending it directly to YouTube.

Plan for recording and recovery
Keep a copy independent of YouTube’s archive
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the recording matters, keep a local archive backup and retain the original source objects in S3; do not treat YouTube’s archive as a replacement for either one.
Preflight before going public
- Confirm the EC2 process can read each required object without exposing the bucket publicly.
- Verify clip order, loop behavior, audio, and recovery after a playback or encoder restart.
- Check the encoder’s codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR setting, bitrate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current settings table.
- Preview the signal in Live Control Room and monitor the stream during a test.
- Check that any local archive file is being written and growing if you are keeping one.
Troubleshoot common failures
YouTube does not receive a signal
Check that the encoder is using the stream URL and key from the intended Live Control Room setup, that the EC2 process is running, and that it can access its source files. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder.
The stream starts but clips do not play in order or loop
Check the selected tool’s playlist configuration and confirm that it can read every object in the intended sequence. Looping, transitions, and restart behavior are tool-specific; test them with the complete playlist rather than assuming they are handled automatically.

Video or audio quality is unstable
Review the encoder output and use the YouTube recommendation for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. Confirm CBR and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), then test the connection and monitor both audio and video in Live Control Room.
A long stream has no complete YouTube archive
Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube’s automatic archive. Use a separate local recording if you need a dependable copy, and keep your original S3 objects.
