You can send an HLS stream from an encoder running on Amazon EC2 to YouTube Live, but you cannot simply paste an HLS playlist URL into YouTube. Configure a YouTube stream key for HLS, then use an encoder that sends YouTube-compatible HLS output to the HTTPS ingest URL generated for that key. YouTube requires specific segment, playlist, transport, and codec settings, so the right encoder configuration depends on your source and tooling.
What you need to know before setting it up
- An EC2 instance that can access your source and run an encoder capable of producing YouTube-compatible HLS output.
- A YouTube Live stream configured to use the HLS protocol, plus its generated HTTPS stream URL.
- A source and encoder configuration that satisfy YouTube’s HLS requirements. A source
.m3u8file is not necessarily suitable to forward unchanged.
The reviewed AWS documentation describes MediaLive HLS and RTMP/RTMPS output capabilities, but does not establish a universal EC2 command, instance size, or recipe for arbitrary HLS inputs. Choose the host and encoder based on your source codecs, processing needs, and testing; do not assume one instance size or command will fit every stream.
Configure YouTube Live for HLS
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- In the stream’s settings, choose HLS as the protocol. YouTube generates an HTTPS stream URL; copy that URL into your encoder’s destination configuration. You can also use the optional backup URL if your workflow needs it. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion setup.
- Keep the stream URL secret. It contains the stream key, so anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
YouTube’s HLS ingest endpoint receives an encoded stream; it is not a place to enter the URL of your source playlist. Your encoder must read the source and publish a compliant output to the generated HTTPS endpoint.
Meet YouTube’s HLS output requirements
Validate these properties in the encoder’s output, rather than assuming a playlist that plays locally is ready for YouTube ingest. YouTube’s current HLS guidance specifies:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Segments: MPEG-TS segments between 1 and 4 seconds long. Byte-range addressing is not supported.
- Playlist: A rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
- Transport: HTTPS requests using POST or PUT.
- Encryption: HTTPS is supported; additional encryption beyond HTTPS is not.
- Media formats: H.264 or HEVC video, with AAC, AC3, or EAC3 audio listed as supported formats.
These are receiving-side requirements, not a complete encoder command. The exact configuration depends on the source codecs, whether the input is a file or a live HLS playlist, and how your encoder implements rolling playlists and HTTPS delivery. Consult YouTube’s HLS requirements and verify the actual output behavior.
Set video and audio parameters
YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and a frame rate no higher than 60 fps. It says not to let the keyframe interval exceed four seconds. Match resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to your source and intended stream; do not upscale a lower-quality source expecting it to gain detail. The HLS-specific codec list and general encoder recommendations are documented separately, so confirm that your selected combination is supported for the chosen protocol. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

There is no single verified FFmpeg command for every HLS source in this workflow. Before writing a command, determine whether your input is a media file or an existing HLS playlist, inspect its video and audio codecs, and check that the encoder can produce the required TS segments, rolling playlist behavior, and HTTPS POST/PUT delivery. Test with representative motion and audio, then adjust from YouTube’s stream-health feedback.
Run the encoder from Amazon EC2
- Prepare the host. Select an EC2 environment with access to the input and the encoder you plan to use. The appropriate instance family and size depend on source format and the amount of decoding or transcoding required; the reviewed sources do not establish a universal choice.
- Prepare the input. Confirm the source is readable from the instance and identify its codecs and playlist behavior. If it is an HLS source, check whether it is a live playlist or a finite playlist and whether the encoder can consume it as intended.
- Configure an HLS-capable encoder. Set the output to YouTube’s HTTPS HLS URL, use the required TS segments and rolling playlist limits, and select compatible video and audio settings. Keep credentials out of public logs, scripts, and repositories.
- Start with a test stream. Use a sample with motion and audio similar to the intended program. Check that the encoder is publishing successfully and watch the stream in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it.
- Monitor while live. Review YouTube’s stream health and any messages it reports. Correct encoder, network, or source problems indicated by those messages before treating the stream as stable.
AWS documents MediaLive as a separate managed media service with HLS output capabilities. That does not establish it as a required component for this EC2 workflow, nor do the reviewed AWS materials compare its cost or operational burden with EC2 for this use case. See AWS Elemental MediaLive HLS output documentation.

HLS latency versus RTMPS
HLS delivers video in segments, so it has higher latency than continuous RTMP delivery. When you select HLS in YouTube, the ultra-low-latency option is turned off. YouTube recommends RTMPS generally, so use HLS when its ingest path or supported formats meet your needs and the added delay is acceptable. Encoder choices should be assessed for the actual YouTube HTTPS HLS requirements—not merely because they can read an HLS URL. YouTube’s explanation is in its HLS setup guidance, and its general recommendations are in the encoder settings guide.
Troubleshooting common failures
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Confirm the stream is set to HLS, the encoder is sending to the generated HTTPS URL, and the URL and key are current. Check the encoder’s connection and YouTube’s status messages.
- The source playlist works, but ingest fails: A playable source playlist is not proof of compliant output. Check TS packaging, segment duration, rolling playlist behavior, lack of byte-range segments, and use of HTTPS POST or PUT.
- Video or audio is rejected or missing: Inspect the source and encoded output formats against YouTube’s HLS codec list. Verify that audio is present and uses a listed codec.
- Playback is delayed: HLS latency is expected to be higher than continuous RTMP, and YouTube disables ultra-low latency for HLS. If the use case depends on very low delay, reconsider whether HLS is the right ingest protocol.
- The stream starts but becomes unstable: Test with similar motion and audio, monitor stream health, and respond to YouTube’s specific warnings. The right fix depends on whether the issue is in the source, encoder, or connection.
- The encoder command or instance choice is unclear: Do not copy a command or instance size as a universal solution. Establish the input format and encoder capabilities first, then validate the output against YouTube’s requirements.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel without maintaining an EC2 encoder workflow, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo plans, or start the free day.
