You can run a continuous YouTube stream from an Amazon EC2 instance in Mumbai by hosting an encoder on an EC2 virtual machine in the ap-south-1 region, sending its output to YouTube over RTMPS, and monitoring both the encoder and the live stream. EC2 keeps the host off your home computer, but it cannot guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast: the encoder, network, instance, or YouTube can still disconnect.
This walkthrough assumes you want to loop a video file or send another prepared feed—not stream live camera footage. The exact EC2 size depends on whether the host only relays an already encoded feed or also encodes or transcodes video.
Before you start: check channel eligibility and choose the workload
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before scheduling your launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Decide what EC2 will do. Relaying an already encoded feed is different from encoding or transcoding a video on the server. Encoding requires compute capacity appropriate to the codec, resolution, and frame rate; do not assume a particular instance size will suffice without testing that workload.
- Have a video or other source you are entitled to use. A technically successful stream can still face copyright claims or other YouTube policy consequences. Use music, footage, and other material only when you have the necessary rights or permission.
Launch an EC2 host in Mumbai
- In the AWS console, select the Mumbai region, identified as
ap-south-1. AWS lists an EC2 service endpoint for Mumbai in its EC2 service endpoint documentation. - Choose an instance type based on the work the encoder will perform, then test the complete source, codec, resolution, and frame rate on it. Consider CPU and memory for software encoding, and check the instance’s network capacity. AWS notes that network performance varies by instance type; an “up to” bandwidth figure is not a promise of that maximum continuously. See AWS EC2 instance network bandwidth guidance.
- Launch the instance with an operating system and storage suited to your encoder and media. Limit network access to what you need to administer the host; do not expose an encoder control interface publicly without a reason and appropriate protection.
- Install and configure the encoder you intend to use. The exact commands and resource needs depend on that software and whether you are relaying or encoding; the available guidance does not establish a tested EC2 size or a universal encoder command for this workload.
Configure YouTube ingest and encoder output
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select the live stream. Get the current stream URL and stream key from its stream settings. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance explains where these values are managed.
- Enter the server URL and key in the encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream connection; use it when your encoder supports it. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, repositories, or logs. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.
- Set the encoder to a format YouTube supports and that your encoder and instance can actually produce. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest with H.264, H.265, or AV1, up to 60 fps; support in YouTube does not mean every EC2 instance or encoder can handle every combination.
Set bitrate, keyframes, and bandwidth headroom
For H.264, YouTube’s current encoder guidance gives these recommended bitrate examples:

These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular source or encoder will look good at that bitrate. Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends, and confirm your encoder’s resolution, frame rate, codec, and keyframe settings before going live. Allow at least 20% network bandwidth headroom above the stream bitrate, following YouTube’s streaming tips. Include both primary and backup feeds when calculating total required bandwidth if you run them simultaneously. Test from the actual instance: the instance type’s network capacity and the route to YouTube matter, not just the bitrate entered in an encoder.
Start the broadcast and verify stream health
- Run a test before relying on the stream. Confirm the source plays, the encoder stays running, and YouTube receives the expected video and audio.
- Check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room while the encoder sends data. Look for connection or quality warnings and resolve them before treating the stream as operational.
- Watch the EC2 instance and encoder process as well as YouTube’s status. AWS CloudWatch and supported ENA network metrics can help reveal host or network problems; they do not replace checking whether YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
- Once the test is stable, configure the encoder to loop the prepared media or feed as intended and start the broadcast. Verify the loop boundary and audio/video continuity rather than assuming the source will repeat cleanly.
YouTube advises testing before going live and provides guidance on encoder failover in its live-streaming tips. A continuously running EC2 process is not itself a recovery plan.

Plan for reconnection, recovery, and archives
A 24/7 stream can fail at several independent points: the encoder process may exit, the instance may stop or become unhealthy, the network path may fail, or YouTube may drop the ingest connection. Monitor those components and arrange a tested way to restart the encoder and reconnect it. If uninterrupted programming matters, test failover rather than assuming that an automatic restart will restore the entire broadcast correctly.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will be archived under the same rule. If archive availability matters, check current YouTube Studio behavior and decide whether to schedule separate broadcasts; do not assume that restarting an encoder necessarily creates a new YouTube broadcast or archive. Estimate the AWS cost from your actual configuration
EC2 On-Demand compute is billed while the instance is running, with a 60-second minimum billing period. The total for a 24/7 stream depends on the instance type and region, plus any storage, data transfer, and other resources you use. There is no reliable single monthly total without those choices. Check current Mumbai pricing for the exact configuration before deployment; AWS explains On-Demand billing in its EC2 On-Demand documentation.
Keep the instance size tied to measured workload needs. A relay of an already encoded feed may have different compute demands from a software encoder that transcodes, while both still need enough network capacity and monitoring for the intended stream.

Troubleshoot common failures
