If FFmpeg exits on EC2, restart it with a process supervisor such as systemd, then verify that the EC2 instance and the YouTube live event are still healthy. FFmpeg’s output-recovery options can help when the process is still running but its output has failed; they cannot restart an exited process. First identify which layer stopped, because each needs a different recovery action.
Diagnose which part of the stream failed
Do not treat every interruption as an EC2 failure. Check the FFmpeg exit status and logs, the service manager’s status and journal, EC2 instance status checks and boot logs, and the current stream and event state in YouTube Live Control Room. Establish whether FFmpeg exited, its publishing connection dropped while it continued running, the host rebooted, or YouTube stopped accepting the encoder.
- An FFmpeg error by itself does not show that AWS infrastructure failed. AWS automatic instance recovery is for supported instances with qualifying system status check failures, not application-process exits. AWS explains the recovery conditions and behavior.
- If the host is reachable and only FFmpeg exited, focus on process supervision and the exit logs.
- If FFmpeg remains alive but output failed, investigate the output connection and any applicable FFmpeg recovery settings.
- If the instance rebooted or became impaired, check its status and whether the workload came back.
- If FFmpeg is publishing but the event is not receiving it, verify YouTube’s event state, destination, protocol and stream key.
Restart FFmpeg when the process exits
Run the encoder under an operating-system service manager, such as systemd, configured to restart the process after failure and start it at boot. A service manager can relaunch FFmpeg; it does not diagnose or correct the reason FFmpeg stopped. Review repeated failures rather than allowing a restart loop to conceal a bad input path, invalid configuration, exhausted resources or rejected output.
- Inspect the service manager’s status and journal, along with FFmpeg’s own logs, to identify the exit reason and time.
- Confirm that the command, input files or network source, working directory, environment and output destination are valid and available to the service account.
- Configure the service to restart after an unexpected failure and enable it at boot. Exact unit settings depend on your operating system and deployment; test them on the instance rather than assuming a particular restart policy is suitable.
- Keep the stream key in protected configuration accessible to the service, not in shell history or logs. Restrict file permissions and avoid printing the key during troubleshooting.
- After a restart, verify that FFmpeg is running and publishing, then check YouTube Live Control Room to confirm the event is receiving the stream.
Preserve logs and address the cause if FFmpeg exits repeatedly. A successful process restart alone does not establish that the stream is back on the intended YouTube event.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use FFmpeg output recovery only while FFmpeg is alive
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documents the attempt_recovery option for attempting to recover a failed output. It is false by default, and its scope is output recovery while FFmpeg continues running—not relaunching an exited process. Consult the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation that matches the version installed on your instance before choosing options.
FIFO queue settings also involve a tradeoff: dropping packets on queue overflow can prevent the encoder from blocking, but the output may omit stream content. Test the selected settings with the actual input and ingest endpoint; do not assume they guarantee uninterrupted or lossless output.

Recover after an EC2 reboot or infrastructure problem
AWS automatic instance recovery addresses qualifying underlying hardware or software problems that cause a system status check failure. It is not triggered simply because an instance status check fails, and it is not a general restart policy for applications. Recovery presents as an unplanned reboot; volatile memory is lost and operating-system uptime resets. Check that the instance type and configuration support the feature and that it is enabled for your instance. See AWS’s automatic instance recovery guidance for its boundaries.
- After a reboot or recovery, check EC2 status and system and boot logs to understand what happened.
- Check whether the streaming workload is running. AWS’s unreachable-instance troubleshooting guidance advises checking the application after recovery and starting it if it is not running.
- Start the encoder if needed, and configure its service to launch at boot if unattended recovery is required.
- Confirm output in YouTube Live Control Room rather than assuming that a healthy EC2 instance means the stream has resumed.
Verify YouTube accepts the restarted encoder
A restarted FFmpeg process does not guarantee that YouTube will resume the same live event. Check that the event is still in a state that accepts an encoder and that the destination, stream key and ingest protocol are correct. Follow the instructions for the protocol you use. YouTube’s retrieved help page describes configuration for HLS ingestion; it does not establish a universal RTMP reconnection rule for resuming the same event. Do not apply behavior documented for another streaming service to YouTube.

Choose the recovery layer that matches the failure
| Mechanism | What it addresses | Trigger and limits |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg output recovery | A failed output while the FFmpeg process remains running. | Depends on the muxer and configured options; queue behavior can trade blocking for dropped packets. It cannot restart an exited process. |
| Process supervision | An FFmpeg process that exits. | A service manager can relaunch it, but does not itself fix the cause of failure. |
| EC2 automatic instance recovery | Qualifying infrastructure problems associated with system status check failures. | Requires supported configuration and results in a reboot; it is not a response to an application process exiting. |
| YouTube event and ingest checks | Whether YouTube is accepting the encoder and the intended event remains active. | Verify the current event and protocol instructions; a restarted encoder alone does not prove the event resumed. |
