Run FFmpeg as an enabled systemd service: put your tested FFmpeg command in ExecStart, choose a restart policy with a delay, then enable the service so it starts at boot. If FFmpeg needs configured network connectivity immediately, order it after network-online.target—but that target only works as intended when the server’s network manager has a suitable wait-online service enabled.
What systemd can—and cannot—recover
An enabled service lets systemd start FFmpeg during boot. A restart policy can relaunch FFmpeg after the managed process exits. It does not guarantee recovery from every interruption: if FFmpeg remains running but stalls or loses its connection without exiting, a basic restart policy may not act. Network readiness at boot is also distinct from continued access to YouTube, DNS, and the video source.
The exact directive behavior can vary with the systemd version installed on your server. Check the server’s local systemd.service(5) manual before relying on a particular restart policy or other directive.
Prepare the FFmpeg command and YouTube destination
Test the command interactively first
Confirm the FFmpeg executable path on the target server, then run the complete command manually and verify that YouTube receives the stream. A service should use the same working command rather than an untested approximation. FFmpeg’s documented command form is ffmpeg [global_options] [input_options] -i input [output_options] output_url. Options generally apply to the next input or output, so place input options before -i and output options before the output URL. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

Get the current stream URL and key
Use YouTube Live Control Room to obtain the stream URL and key. YouTube’s guidance is: “Copy your YouTube stream key from the Live Control Room and paste it into your encoder.” Choose the RTMPS server URL if you want encrypted RTMP over TLS; use the URL and key YouTube provides for the stream. See YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
Protect the stream key
A stream key is a credential. Avoid putting it where unrelated local users can read it, and do not expose it in scripts or logs with broad permissions. Use a protected configuration or environment file and restrict its ownership and permissions. YouTube describes the key as the value copied from Live Control Room into the encoder; treat it accordingly.

Create a systemd service
Create a system-level unit such as /etc/systemd/system/youtube-ffmpeg.service. The example below shows the structure; replace the executable, input, and output with the exact paths and command that you already tested. Confirm the syntax and supported directives against the installed systemd manual.
[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg YouTube live stream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg [your tested options and input] [your output options] [YouTube RTMPS URL and protected stream key]
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
This example uses Restart=on-failure so the service is configured to restart after a failure, with a five-second delay to avoid an immediate retry loop. If you instead need FFmpeg restarted after any exit, including a clean exit, an example discussed in the FFmpeg-user mailing list uses Restart=always and RestartSec=5. That post is an illustration, not a universal guarantee; choose the policy that matches your intended exit behavior and verify its semantics locally. See the FFmpeg-user service example.

For production use, keep the command readable and credentials protected. systemd has mechanisms for loading environment files, but confirm their syntax and access controls in the local manual before adapting the example. Do not assume that merely moving a key into a file makes it private; check ownership and permissions.
Decide whether to wait for network configuration
network.target and network-online.target are not interchangeable. The first is primarily an ordering marker for network-management startup and shutdown; it does not mean that external connectivity is usable. network-online.target is a wait point for services that need configured connectivity, but it depends on the host’s network-management setup and the corresponding wait-online provider being active. Waiting can add time to boot. See systemd’s network target guidance.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The sample unit includes both Wants=network-online.target and After=network-online.target. Keep them only if waiting for configured networking makes sense for your host, and confirm that its network manager’s wait-online service is enabled. Even a successful wait-online signal does not prove that DNS, YouTube, or an upstream media source is reachable.
Load, enable, and start the service
- Save the unit file. Put the completed unit at
/etc/systemd/system/youtube-ffmpeg.serviceand check that the executable path and command match the working interactive test. - Reload unit definitions. Run
sudo systemctl daemon-reloadafter creating or editing the unit. - Enable it at boot and start it now. Run
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-ffmpeg.service. Enabling arranges for the unit to start through its configured install target; starting launches it immediately. - Inspect the service. Run
sudo systemctl status youtube-ffmpeg.serviceand review recent logs withsudo journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.service -b. Confirm that FFmpeg started and that YouTube reports incoming stream data in Live Control Room. - Test a reboot during a controlled window. Reboot the server, then check the unit state and current-boot journal again. Confirm that YouTube receives data after boot rather than inferring success from the service being enabled.
Test failure and recovery separately
A reboot test checks boot integration; it does not establish what happens when FFmpeg exits or when a live network connection fails. Test these cases independently during a controlled period:
Best Value

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Process exit: stop or terminate FFmpeg in a safe test window and inspect whether the chosen restart policy starts it again after the configured delay.
- Network loss: interrupt connectivity in a controlled way and watch both the journal and YouTube’s incoming-stream status. Determine whether FFmpeg exits, remains stalled, or reconnects.
- Source or DNS failure: check logs when the upstream input or name resolution is unavailable; a boot-time network wait does not cover these later failures.
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation covers many protocol-specific options, but HTTP reconnect switches should not be assumed to solve RTMP output recovery. Behavior depends on the FFmpeg build and the failure mode; there is no universal RTMP recovery guarantee established here. Consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation and test the exact build and stream path you use.
Troubleshoot common startup problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Service fails immediately | Executable path, command syntax, input/output option order, or permissions | Compare ExecStart with the working manual command, inspect systemctl status and journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.service, and verify the FFmpeg path. |
| Service starts before networking is configured | Wait-online dependency or provider is absent or inactive | Check the host’s network manager and its wait-online service. Confirm the unit’s Wants= and After= settings against local systemd guidance. |
| Unit is enabled but not running | Boot target, unit load state, or an execution error | Run systemctl is-enabled youtube-ffmpeg.service, systemctl status youtube-ffmpeg.service, and review the current-boot journal. |
| FFmpeg exits but does not restart | Restart policy, service result, or unit syntax | Check the local systemd.service(5) manual and journal; verify that the configured policy matches the exit behavior you want. |
| Service remains active but YouTube stops receiving data | FFmpeg may be stalled or disconnected without exiting | Inspect FFmpeg logs and test the specific network failure. A process restart policy alone may not detect a live but stalled process. |
| Authentication or connection errors | Stream URL/key, destination availability, DNS, or network reachability | Recheck the current URL and key in YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the selected RTMPS endpoint, and inspect logs without exposing the key. |
DIY server costs and operational trade-offs
With systemd, you still need a Linux server with enough resources and reliable connectivity to read the source and send the stream continuously. A VPS or dedicated server is a hosting category to consider if you do not already have suitable infrastructure; the actual cost depends on the provider and server configuration. This setup also leaves you responsible for FFmpeg, credentials, logs, network behavior, and recovery testing.
For a continuous stream, evaluate the cost and operational work over the period you intend to run it, not just the initial setup. A systemd restart policy is useful for process exits, but it is not by itself a complete monitor for a stream that has silently stalled.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not maintain a Linux server and systemd unit, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; your uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot, and automatic recovery is provided if YouTube drops the stream. It is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera streaming.
The first day is free with no card. The Monthly plan is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
