Fix YouTube Stream Disconnects When OBS and FFmpeg Share Upload Bandwidth

When OBS drops frames as FFmpeg uploads or streams, test whether the two outbound jobs are competing for capacity, then adjust load and investigate other causes.

If your YouTube stream starts dropping frames or disconnecting while FFmpeg sends data, pause FFmpeg’s outbound transfer briefly and watch OBS and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. If they recover, the jobs are likely competing for upload capacity. Then reduce or reschedule the second transfer, or lower the live stream’s bitrate to fit your stable upload speed with headroom. This is a useful diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix: OBS and YouTube do not document every OBS-and-FFmpeg setup, and other network or encoder problems can cause similar symptoms.

First, check whether FFmpeg is using the network

FFmpeg can be processing a file locally, uploading a file, or sending another live stream. Only an outbound network send competes with OBS for upload bandwidth. Confirm what it is doing before changing encoder settings.

YouTube says the total bitrate being streamed cannot exceed available upload bandwidth, and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Other users and devices on the same connection also consume capacity; YouTube notes that network sharing can limit an individual connection. Applying that guidance to OBS and a concurrent FFmpeg transfer is a practical inference, not a documented guarantee for every two-application setup. YouTube’s streaming tips

Run a controlled test

  1. Keep the live stream settings unchanged. Note the OBS dropped-frame counter and connection status, and check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s live-stream error messages include timestamps and distinguish moderate from critical errors. YouTube’s live streaming error messages
  2. Pause only FFmpeg’s outbound job for a short period. Leave OBS, the encoder settings and other conditions as steady as possible. If OBS stabilizes, shared upload load is a likely contributor. This comparison is a diagnostic inference, not an official prescribed test or proof that no other cause exists.
  3. Decide whether the two jobs need to overlap. If not, schedule the file upload or second live send for another time. If they must overlap, measure stable upload capacity and reduce the live bitrate or resolution as needed.
  4. Recheck stream health after each change. Changing one source of load at a time makes it easier to identify what helped.

Budget upload bandwidth for every outbound task

Use measured upload speed—not download speed—as the starting point. Include the live stream, FFmpeg uploads or second live feeds, and other activity on the network. YouTube recommends keeping 20% headroom rather than planning to consume the full measured upload rate. Actual capacity can vary, so a speed test is not a guarantee that the connection will sustain the same rate throughout an event.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

OBS suggests starting around 75% of total upload speed for its video-bitrate setting when troubleshooting connection drops. That is OBS’s 2024 guidance, not a measured guarantee or a replacement for YouTube’s headroom recommendation. Treat these as separate rules of thumb; do not combine them into a promise that a particular speed will support two simultaneous sends. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting

Choose a bitrate and resolution that fit

YouTube’s encoder table gives recommended video bitrates by resolution, frame rate and codec. For example, its current guidance lists 1080p60 at 17 Mbps for H.264 or 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265; for 720p60, it lists 8 Mbps for H.264 or 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265. These figures are recommendations for the live stream’s video setting, not a total connection-speed requirement and not an allowance for a concurrent FFmpeg transfer. Leave headroom and account for all other outbound traffic. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations

If your stable upload capacity cannot support the live setting plus the other send with headroom, stop or defer the second send, or lower the live bitrate and/or resolution. YouTube advises considering a lower resolution when bandwidth is insufficient for the chosen one. Check the stream after each adjustment rather than assuming that a single setting will suit every connection.

Check the encoder settings that matter

  • YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and specifies supported video codecs, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Use the recommendations for your selected codec, resolution and frame rate.
  • RTMPS encrypts the stream connection. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
  • Before an important broadcast, test with representative audio and motion and monitor stream health. YouTube recommends a preflight that resembles the planned event. YouTube live streaming tips

Tell network trouble apart from encoder trouble

OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection or that the connection cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; too many dropped frames can disconnect the stream. Its troubleshooting guide attributes dropped frames or intermittent disconnections to a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server. That makes a rising dropped-frame count a reason to investigate the network and bitrate, but it does not by itself identify the exact cause. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide

If YouTube reports poor quality in the encoder, check the encoder output and CPU load. If the output looks healthy, YouTube advises testing the strength of the outbound internet connection. If network tests point outside your computer, contact your internet provider. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide
