You can run a continuous gaming-highlights broadcast by having FFmpeg read prepared clips on a Google Compute Engine virtual machine (VM) and send the live output directly to YouTube Live. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the right resolution, codec, bitrate, and VM depend on your workload. The setup is not unattended just because it runs in the cloud: you still need to supervise the process, protect the stream key, monitor stream health, and plan for recovery.
How the stream works
The path is straightforward: make the highlight clips and audio available to the VM; use FFmpeg to read, sequence or loop the media and encode or mux the output; then send that live connection to YouTube Live. YouTube ingests the stream, reports health information, and transcodes it into output formats for different viewers and devices. The instructions below describe a design, not a tested production configuration. In particular, playlist handling, process supervision, and recovery need to be adapted and tested in your environment.
Choose an output format and bitrate
YouTube’s official encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, recommends CBR, and allows frame rates up to 60 fps. Its published bitrate figures vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; the H.264 examples below are minimum and recommended values, not independently measured throughput guarantees. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz; for 5.1 audio, its guidance lists 384 Kbps at 48 kHz. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says it must not exceed four seconds. Match your chosen frame rate and resolution to the material: more detail and smoother motion generally call for a higher recommended bitrate. Use an encoder and codec your VM can sustain, and test with representative gameplay movement and audio while watching stream health. YouTube’s guidance says it automatically detects selected settings, but your outgoing connection still has to deliver them reliably. YouTube Live encoder settings.

Prepare Compute Engine before encoding
Check project and regional capacity
Before creating the VM, check the intended project’s quota for the VM resources you need, in the region where you plan to deploy. Check GPU quota separately only if you have a measured reason to use a GPU. Quota is project- and region-sensitive, and having quota does not guarantee that a resource is available in a particular zone. The title does not imply that a GPU is required. Compute Engine quotas.
Allow for outbound streaming
The live feed is outbound traffic from the VM. Google Cloud says maximum egress depends on machine type and destination route, and achievable throughput has constraints. Select a VM whose outbound capacity can sustain the stream bitrate with headroom for protocol overhead and any other traffic, then verify actual performance from the chosen deployment. Do not treat a published maximum as a guaranteed rate. Compute Engine network bandwidth.

Estimate cost for your actual configuration
Ongoing cost depends on region, VM configuration, runtime, disk, bitrate, and data-transfer pricing. Build an estimate in the Google Cloud pricing calculator after choosing those inputs; the available figures do not support one universal monthly total for this setup. Include the continuous VM runtime and expected outbound traffic rather than estimating from compute alone.
Configure FFmpeg and YouTube Live
The following is a setup sequence, not a production-tested command or a verified playlist script. Exact FFmpeg input and encoding options depend on your source files and installed FFmpeg build. Test the entire path with representative clips before leaving it unattended.

- Prepare the media. Put the highlight clips and any audio the broadcast needs somewhere the VM can read them. Decide how clips should be sequenced or repeated, and check that their video and audio properties are suitable for a continuous programme. The documentation cited here does not establish a particular concat file or playlist command.
- Confirm the encode settings. Choose a supported codec, output resolution and frame rate, video bitrate, audio format, and keyframe interval using YouTube’s guidance above. Configure CBR and a two-second keyframe frequency, and make sure your VM has adequate compute and outbound capacity.
- Obtain YouTube’s ingest details. In YouTube’s live control workflow, create or select the broadcast and obtain its stream key and server details. Use the primary ingest URL and secure RTMPS when available. YouTube’s Live Streaming API schema also describes primary and backup stream URLs and stream health states, but that alone is not a complete failover recipe. YouTube LiveStreams API.
- Keep the key private. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put it in a public script, repository, log, or support message. Restrict access to any configuration or secret store that contains it.
- Start FFmpeg and validate the output. Run your adapted FFmpeg process on the VM, then confirm that YouTube receives the feed, that audio and video are in sync, and that stream health is acceptable while the clips play. Check transitions and the point where your sequence repeats, not just the first minute.
- Add operations before relying on it. Arrange process supervision, useful logs, monitoring, and a recovery procedure for a stopped encoder, network interruption, or YouTube disconnect. These are engineering recommendations; the cited documentation does not prescribe a specific supervisor or service unit. Test recovery and the complete end-to-end path before treating the stream as unattended.
Keep the design resilient without overbuilding it
A single VM and FFmpeg process are simpler to operate, but a process or VM failure can interrupt the stream. Independent failover or a backup stream can add resilience, but also adds implementation complexity and cost. YouTube’s API schema includes primary and backup stream URLs; it does not by itself establish how to configure a complete failover system. Start with the level of resilience you can actually test and monitor rather than assuming a backup exists because YouTube exposes a backup URL.
Do not confuse direct YouTube ingest with Google’s Live Stream API
This architecture sends FFmpeg output from Compute Engine directly to YouTube Live. Google Cloud’s separate Live Stream API is a managed media service with its own input endpoints, including RTMP_PUSH and SRT_PUSH, and its own transcoding and output-channel workflow. It is not required for the direct FFmpeg-to-YouTube design described here. Google Cloud Live Stream API documentation.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
- YouTube does not receive a stream: verify the selected ingest URL, that the broadcast is ready to receive the feed, and that the stream key is current and entered correctly. Keep the key secret while checking it.
- Stream health reports problems or the feed drops: inspect FFmpeg logs and VM network conditions, confirm that outbound throughput can sustain the configured bitrate, and check that no other workload is consuming the available capacity. Google Cloud’s stated maximum egress is not a promise of achieved throughput for a particular VM and route.
- Video stutters or quality is unstable: test a lower output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, or use a codec the VM can encode reliably. Compare the selected bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for that codec and output format, then validate with representative gameplay.
- Audio is missing, distorted, or out of sync: check that FFmpeg is reading the intended audio source and that the output uses a supported audio codec and appropriate sample rate. Validate the full clip sequence, including transitions.
- The process stops after running unattended: inspect logs to distinguish an FFmpeg error, VM interruption, or connection failure. Configure supervision and alerting, and test your restart and recovery behavior; a cloud VM does not automatically make an individual process failure-proof.
- The VM cannot be created in the chosen region or zone: check the project’s regional quota and zone availability, then adjust the deployment choice or request the appropriate quota. GPU quota is separate if your design actually needs a GPU.
