For a low-cost, self-managed 24/7 YouTube stream in India, start by evaluating a Google Cloud Compute Engine E2 virtual machine, then test the actual playback or encoding workload before settling on its size. Compare Mumbai (asia-south1) with Delhi (asia-south2) using your billing account and real stream path: neither the cheapest region nor the most stable ingest route can be assumed without checking.
An E2 shared-core VM may suit lightweight playback and forwarding, but it is not a proven choice for demanding real-time encoding. Your bill will include more than compute, and a single VM is a single point of failure. The setup below explains how to choose, configure, cost, and monitor it without treating an untested design as a guaranteed 24/7 service.
Choose a streaming method before choosing a VM
The right machine depends on what the server must do. Replaying and forwarding already-encoded video is less demanding than encoding, compositing scenes, or transcoding a live feed. Google describes E2 as a cost-optimized general-purpose VM family, and its shared-core instances time-share CPU. Those facts make E2 a sensible first candidate for a lightweight workload, not proof that the smallest instance will handle your particular stream.
- Pre-encoded loop or playlist: begin by evaluating an E2 option, then check CPU and memory headroom while the actual stream runs.
- Real-time encoding or scene composition: test the target resolution and frame rate for an extended period. Increase the machine size if CPU or memory headroom is inadequate or frames are dropped.
- Unattended operation: plan for process restarts, reconnects, alerts, and recovery from VM or zone issues. A single instance does not remove those failure modes.
Google lists E2 availability in both Mumbai and Delhi. Compare them using the same VM configuration and workload, and measure end-to-end ingest stability rather than assuming geographic proximity determines performance. Google Cloud’s E2 machine-series documentation and regional availability information provide starting points for checking configurations and locations.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Estimate the full monthly cost
Model the bill as VM runtime plus boot and persistent disk, outbound network transfer, and any other services the design uses. Use the Google Cloud pricing calculator with the intended account, region, machine configuration, disk, and expected traffic. No exact India monthly total is established without those inputs and current rates.
Free-tier allowances are limited
Google Cloud’s current free-tier overview, accessed in 2026, lists an allowance equivalent to one e2-micro VM for the total hours in a month, up to 30 GB of standard persistent disk, and up to 1 GB of outbound data transfer per month. These are limited allowances, not a guarantee that a continuously streamed channel is free: your chosen VM may not qualify, and sustained video traffic can exceed the transfer allowance.

Do not apply E2 sustained-use discounts
Google states: “The E2 machine series doesn’t offer sustained use discounts (SUDs); however, it provides consistently low on-demand and committed-use pricing.” E2 is documented as eligible for commitment discount options, but compare those only after the workload and region are stable, and verify current terms and account eligibility. Spot VMs can cost less but may be interrupted, so they are not the safe default for a stream intended to remain live.
Configure the YouTube ingest
YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. For H.264, its current encoder guidance recommends 10 Mbps at 1080p/30 fps or 6 Mbps at 720p/30 fps. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a performance certification for a Google Cloud VM or its network. Leave dependable upload headroom above the selected bitrate and test the actual feed.

YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into viewer output formats, so you do not need to pre-create every playback rendition merely because you choose one ingest resolution. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings before configuring your encoder, since recommendations can change.
Protect the stream key
YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: keep it out of public scripts, logs, and screenshots, and rotate it if exposed. Use the key associated with the intended YouTube live stream and verify the destination before starting your encoder.

Test before going public
- Configure the encoder for RTMPS, CBR, the intended resolution and frame rate, and a two-second keyframe interval.
- Run an unlisted or private test using representative motion and audio. Check that both remain synchronized and that no frames are dropped.
- Inspect YouTube’s stream-health status while the feed runs, then monitor it during a longer test at the target settings.
- Record resource use and reconnect behavior on the VM. Resize or revise the design if CPU or memory headroom is poor, or if network interruptions prevent recovery.
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports testing and monitoring; it does not certify this Google Cloud architecture.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make the VM recover from interruptions
A single VM is a single point of failure. For a continuous channel, configure process supervision so the playback or encoder process restarts after a crash, and test its reconnect behavior after a network interruption. Set up alerts for process exit, stream-health problems, and resource pressure, and keep a documented recovery path for VM or zone problems.

A second encoder or failover design may be justified if outages are costly, but it adds complexity and spend. There is no established end-to-end uptime guarantee for the single-VM approach described here; do not infer a particular availability percentage from Google’s machine-family or region information.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Stream will not connect | Incorrect or outdated stream key, destination, or ingest configuration | Verify the intended YouTube stream and key, confirm RTMPS settings, and replace a key that may have been exposed. |
| Dropped frames or unstable output | Insufficient encoder headroom or unreliable upload path | Check CPU and memory during the target workload, leave network headroom above the selected bitrate, and test the actual ingest path. Resize or use a less demanding encoding workload if needed. |
| Stream stops after a process or connection failure | No supervisor, restart policy, or tested reconnect path | Configure process supervision and verify recovery by testing a restart and a network interruption before relying on the stream. |
| Bill exceeds the estimate | Unaccounted disk, outbound transfer, region, or runtime charges | Recheck calculator inputs against actual VM runtime, disk configuration, and traffic; do not assume free-tier transfer covers continuous streaming. |
| Mumbai and Delhi perform differently than expected | Region choice alone does not establish the quality of the actual ingest route | Run the same workload and settings in each candidate region and compare stream health and calculator estimates. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to maintain a VM and encoder process, StreamNeo is an alternative for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. The steps are simple:
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it does not stream from a camera. See StreamNeo or plan details, then start your free first day.
