A frame drop that coincides with a YouTube media-playlist update is a clue to investigate—not proof that the update caused it. First check which OBS Stats counter changes: network dropped frames, frames missed due to rendering lag, or skipped frames due to encoding lag. Those counters point to different problems, so capture a log and compare HLS with another compatible ingest path before changing settings.
What the timing does—and does not—tell you
YouTube HLS sends video in segments and uses a rolling playlist; it is not a continuous stream in the same way as RTMP. A playlist update is therefore expected HLS behavior. YouTube’s instructions specify segments of 1–4 seconds and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, but those requirements do not establish that a playlist update should make OBS drop frames. YouTube’s HLS setup instructions describe the protocol requirements.
The key distinction is whether the timing is repeatable and which OBS counter moves. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting says, “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.” That diagnosis concerns frames not reaching the destination; it is different from local rendering or encoding lag.
Identify the counter before troubleshooting
- In OBS, open View → Stats and watch the counters during the event. Note the timestamp and which value changes.
- Dropped Frames (Network) points toward delivery over the connection or ingest path. OBS describes network drops as a stability or configured-bitrate-capacity issue.
- Frames Missed due to Rendering Lag points toward OBS not rendering/compositing frames in time, often because of GPU contention or demanding scenes.
- Skipped Frames due to Encoding Lag points toward the encoder or system not encoding quickly enough. Investigate system load and encoding performance rather than assuming an HLS playlist cause.
Preview stutter alone does not prove a network drop. OBS’s encoding-performance guidance explains how GPU resources and scene complexity can affect rendering and encoding performance.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Capture a useful, repeatable test
- Record your OBS version, operating system, encoder, YouTube ingest protocol (HLS or RTMP/RTMPS), configured bitrate, output settings, and—if configurable—HLS segment settings.
- Use an unlisted or otherwise low-risk test stream. Keep the scene, encoder, bitrate, and other output settings constant, then stream long enough to see whether the event recurs.
- Save an OBS log from the session and note the time of each playlist advance and Stats-counter change. OBS requests logs for connection troubleshooting because they contain useful diagnostic details.
- If compatible with your codec and stream requirements, repeat the test using RTMP/RTMPS. Keep the other variables as similar as possible. YouTube says HLS has higher latency because it sends segments, and lists HLS for HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP; its HLS setup page lists H.264 and HEVC support for HLS.
- Where available, compare a different YouTube ingest server as a separate test. Change one factor at a time so you can tell whether the outcome follows the protocol, server, or another setting.
If changing protocol or server changes the result, that narrows the likely problem to a path or configuration difference; it does not, by itself, prove a playlist-implementation defect. The available documentation does not identify this precise playlist-advance symptom as a confirmed OBS defect.
Choose the fix that matches the counter
If network dropped frames rise
- Compare the configured bitrate with sustained, stable upload capacity—not just a speed-test peak. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee; platform limits and real-world stability still apply.
- Try a different YouTube ingest server or another streaming service, as OBS recommends, while keeping other test settings steady.
- Check VPN, security, and network-prioritization software, along with network drivers, router/modem behavior, IP settings, and possible faulty hardware.
- If you are on Wi-Fi, test a wired Ethernet connection. A cable is a useful test only if the current wireless connection or cable is suspect; it is not an established explanation for drops synchronized to a playlist update.
- Lower the bitrate as a diagnostic if the connection cannot reliably sustain it. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide also describes dynamic bitrate, which lowers bitrate during congestion to reduce dropped frames. It can reduce video quality and does not fix the underlying connection problem.
If rendering lag rises
- Check GPU load, including any game or other application competing with OBS.
- Try limiting the game’s frame rate, simplifying the scene, reducing filters or resource-heavy browser sources, or lowering output resolution or frame rate.
- Repeat the test with the same ingest protocol and bitrate. These changes are relevant when rendering performance is the counter that rises, not as a general remedy for network drops.
If encoding lag rises
- Check encoder load and available system resources while the event occurs.
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate, or otherwise reduce encoding load, then repeat the same test. Treat this as an encoding-performance issue unless the log and a controlled comparison establish a connection to the ingest path.
How to interpret HLS comparisons
HLS and RTMP/RTMPS are not interchangeable in every setup. YouTube positions HLS for HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP, and HLS has higher latency due to segmented delivery. Keep codec, encoder, bitrate, scene load, and upload conditions fixed where possible, and record what must change to make each protocol work.

An OBS forum thread started on 2023-08-20 includes a user’s report of significant dropped frames with YouTube HLS and HEVC, particularly above a reported bitrate of 15,000, alongside a report of higher-bitrate success on RTMP. A reply requested an OBS log. This is an anecdotal configuration report, not a verified diagnosis, current defect report, or proof of the playlist timing described here. Read the forum thread.
When viewers see buffering but OBS shows no drops
Viewer-side buffering can occur even when OBS reports no network dropped frames. Viewers use different devices and network connections, so their playback experience does not identify an OBS ingest problem on its own. Compare OBS Stats and the saved log with reports from viewers before changing encoder or network settings.
