How to Keep a YouTube Gaming VOD Stream from Showing a Frozen Frame Between Files

If OBS holds a gaming VOD’s last frame between clips, check Media Source end behavior or play the clips from one ordered VLC Video playlist. Test the actual transition before going live.

If OBS is holding a clip’s last image between gaming VOD files, first check the source that plays the clips. For separate OBS Media Sources, enable Show nothing when playback ends. If the clips should play one after another, try putting them in a single VLC Video playlist source instead. Neither setting guarantees a gapless transition on every setup, so test the actual clips before going live.

First check whether viewers see the frozen frame

A frozen image in the OBS preview is not, by itself, proof that the same frame is reaching YouTube. Check OBS’s outgoing program and make a private or unlisted test stream, then review the resulting playback. This helps distinguish a local preview or source-display issue from a problem in the stream viewers receive.

Watch the transition from the end of one file to the beginning of the next. Check the picture and audio, and note whether the issue happens only when changing scenes or reloading a source.

Stop a Media Source from holding its last frame

If each VOD clip has its own OBS Media Source, open that source’s properties and enable Show nothing when playback ends. OBS Project documentation says this hides the source at the end; it is useful for video files so they do not show the last frame indefinitely. The documented setting is on by default, but verify it on the source that exhibits the problem.

  • 【Plug and Play】No driver or external power supply required, true PnP. Once plugged in, the device is identified automatically as a webcam. Detect input and adjust output automatically. Won't occupy CPU, optional audio capture. No freeze with correct setting.
  • 【Compatible with Multiple Systems】suitable for Windows and Mac OS. High speed USB 3.0 technology and superior low latency technology makes it easier for you to transmit live streaming to Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, OBS, Potplayer and VLC.
  • 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
  • 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.

This hides the ended source; it does not make two separate sources transition seamlessly. If there is a gap before another source appears, viewers may see whatever is behind the hidden source in the scene, such as a background or another layer.

Play several clips from one VLC Video playlist

For clips intended to run in sequence, a single VLC Video source gives OBS one ordered playlist rather than several independent Media Sources ending and starting separately.

  • Analog Audio In: Capture in-game chat or commentary with 3.5mm input
  1. Install VLC. VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear in OBS. Match the architecture: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  2. Add the source. In the scene where the VOD should play, add a VLC Video source and open its properties.
  3. Add the files in playback order. Put the clips into the source playlist in the sequence you want viewers to see.
  4. Check shuffle and looping. Shuffle is off by default, preserving the listed order; playlist looping is on by default. Confirm both settings match your intended broadcast. Turn looping off if the playlist should end rather than repeat.
  5. Test a complete transition. Play through the end of one clip and the beginning of the next. Watch for a held image or blank interval and listen for an audio gap. Repeat with the scene changes you plan to use live.

The VLC playlist is a practical configuration to try, not a documented guarantee of zero blank or stale frames on every computer, file combination, or scene setup.

Check scene changes and source reloads

OBS warns that Close file when inactive can leave a source temporarily not showing while it reloads after becoming active again. It is off by default. If the frozen-frame symptom occurs after switching scenes, check whether this option is enabled on the affected Media Source; do not assume unloading and reloading a file will create a seamless handoff.

Also verify which scene is live and which source is visible when the clip ends. A hidden source may reveal a lower layer, while an inactive source that reloads may briefly disappear. These are local OBS source and scene behaviors, distinct from YouTube receiving the stream.

Test the real stream before scheduling it

  • Use the exact files planned for the broadcast, in their intended order.
  • Confirm shuffle and loop behavior, including what should happen after the final clip.
  • Watch the end of one file and the start of the next; listen for audio gaps as well as checking the picture.
  • Test scene changes and any source deactivation/reactivation that will occur during the stream.
  • Make a private or unlisted test with audio and movement similar to the actual stream. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health and messages during it.

Do not change YouTube ingest settings to fix a local source frame

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Those are encoder recommendations, not a remedy established for OBS displaying a file’s final frame. Set encoding correctly for the stream, but diagnose an end-of-file image in the local OBS source or scene.

YouTube’s HLS guidance concerns HLS ingestion, a segmented transport with higher latency than RTMP. Its requirements include 1–4 second segment duration and no more than five outstanding segments in the rolling playlist. They do not establish a fix for a local Media Source holding its last frame. Do not adjust HLS settings unless the stream actually uses HLS ingestion.

When a different playback method may make sense

FFmpeg documents a concat protocol that reads multiple resources sequentially as one resource, with an ffplay example using three MPEG files. It is a more technical playback alternative, not a verified drop-in fix for arbitrary codecs, files, or OBS setups. Start with the OBS source settings and VLC playlist workflow unless you already have a reason to build a custom playback chain.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a 24/7 YouTube channel built from uploaded gaming VODs, StreamNeo is an alternative to running playback through OBS on a local computer: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded files at the quality supplied, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot.
