A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Choose OBS if your school can keep a computer, media files, network connection and an operator available to monitor and recover the stream. Choose a cloud restreaming service if you want playback to run without leaving a classroom computer on—but verify its current controls, storage, support and contract terms first. Neither option removes the need to plan for YouTube interruptions or to manage recordings carefully. A continuous 24/7 broadcast also needs a separate replay plan: YouTube’s automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours, not a single intact 24-hour replay.
What changes when you move playback from OBS to the cloud?
| Decision | OBS on a local computer | Cloud restreaming service |
|---|---|---|
| What must remain available? | The computer running OBS, its media files, and a working network connection. Someone should be able to monitor and recover the stream. | Playback is hosted by the service rather than the classroom computer. Check the provider’s service commitments, support, storage and access controls; these vary and need current verification. |
| Looping and playlists | OBS Media Source can repeat one file; its VLC Video source can play a playlist. VLC must be installed to use that source. | Some providers describe scheduled prerecorded playback and continuous streaming. Confirm the exact playlist, scheduling and looping controls in the current plan. |
| Interruption recovery | The operator is responsible for noticing and addressing problems with OBS, the computer, files or network. | Recovery behavior is provider-specific. Ask what happens if the service or YouTube connection drops and whether recovery is automatic. |
| Recordings and access | Media remains under local control, but the operator must manage file access, backups and any upload to YouTube. | Files are uploaded to a provider. Confirm storage location, retention, deletion, account access and export options before uploading classroom material. |
| 24/7 replay archive | YouTube’s documented automatic archiving applies to streams under 12 hours; plan how to create and manage shorter replay segments. | A cloud service does not change YouTube’s stated archive boundary. Plan replay handling on YouTube independently of where playback runs. |
| Price and contract | No cloud-service charge is inherent in the OBS workflow, but the school bears the costs of operating its computer, connection and staff time. | Prices, plan limits, terms and reliability commitments are vendor-specific. Compare current terms for the actual channel and required schedule. |
There is no universally better choice. A local setup offers direct control of files and playback; a cloud setup can remove the classroom computer as a dependency. The deciding issue is who will own monitoring, recovery, recording access and replay preparation.
How to loop prerecorded lessons in OBS
OBS supports two useful patterns: repeat a single media file, or build a playlist with the VLC Video source. The OBS documentation lists video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. Supported formats can still behave differently depending on the file and local setup, so prepare and check the actual lessons before scheduling a public stream.
Option 1: repeat one lesson with Media Source
- Open the scene that should carry the lesson in OBS.
- In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source. Create a new source or select an existing one.
- In the source properties, enable Local File and browse to the lesson file.
- Enable Loop to play the file again when it finishes. Use Restart playback when source becomes active if the file should restart when the source is activated.
- Check the preview for picture and audio. If the video does not fill the canvas as intended, adjust its transform in the preview and confirm that text, subtitles and lesson details remain visible.
Option 2: loop a playlist with VLC Video
- Install VLC on the computer running OBS; OBS’s VLC Video source is available only when VLC is installed.
- In the scene’s Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video.
- Add the lesson files to the source playlist in the intended order.
- Leave Loop Playlist on to repeat the playlist; it defaults to On. Leave Shuffle Playlist off to preserve the listed order; it defaults to Off.
- Preview transitions and audio between files. Check that files are accessible to the computer account running OBS and that the playlist still works after restarting OBS.
OBS’s documented media-source behavior is a capability, not a guarantee about a particular computer, file or network. The documentation is at OBS Media Sources.

Configure YouTube and encoder settings for a continuous stream
YouTube accepts an encoder—software or hardware—as the source for a live broadcast. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream, then enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key like a password: restrict access to the account and computer where it is stored, and replace it if it is exposed. First-time live streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help, so enable access and test before the intended launch.
Use current encoder guidance rather than a guessed preset
- Connection: YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. Select RTMPS where the encoder offers it and use the server URL currently shown by YouTube for the stream.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, with a maximum interval of four seconds.
- Video codec and bitrate: YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 options and recommends constant bitrate encoding. Choose a codec and bitrate supported by both the encoder and the selected YouTube ingest settings; consult YouTube’s current resolution-and-bitrate table rather than assuming one bitrate fits every resolution or connection.
- Resolution and frame rate: Match the output to the lesson’s source and the connection’s stable upload capacity. A higher output setting cannot add detail that is absent from the recording and can increase bandwidth demand.
- Audio: Confirm the intended audio track is enabled, then listen to a private or unlisted test from another device. A correct video preview does not prove that the audience will receive sound.
Platform instructions can change. Check YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and the encoder’s own current controls before committing a production configuration.

Plan the 24/7 schedule and YouTube replay separately
A file or playlist can loop continuously, but that does not mean YouTube will provide one complete automatic replay of an uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast. YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Its guidance covers streams under 12 hours; do not rely on it for one intact automatic archive of a 24/7 stream.
If viewers need to watch lessons later, decide how the channel will create and publish replay segments. For example, plan deliberate broadcasts shorter than 12 hours and confirm the resulting archives in YouTube Studio. That is an operational plan, not a promise that every broadcast will archive correctly. Assign someone to check the archive and handle any missing or incomplete replay rather than assuming continuous playback also solves VOD management.

Protect classroom recordings and channel access
Before streaming or uploading classroom recordings, get the relevant school approvals and confirm permissions for every identifiable person and every item of material in the recording. Requirements depend on the school, audience, location and institutional rules; the technical setup alone cannot establish that a stream is compliant.
- Confirm consent and recording permissions, including permissions for music, slides, third-party clips and other materials in the lesson.
- Choose the appropriate YouTube audience and privacy settings, and verify who can view or share the stream and any resulting archive.
- Keep ownership of the YouTube channel and stream key with authorized school personnel; limit access to the OBS computer or any cloud account.
- For a cloud provider, review storage location, retention and deletion, staff access, export options, support, contract terms and what happens to uploaded files when service ends.
- Set a retention and review process for both source recordings and YouTube archives, consistent with school policy and applicable rules.
When a cloud service is the better operational fit
A cloud service is worth considering when the school does not want a classroom computer to be the playback host, or when local staffing and recovery are difficult to sustain. YouTube’s encoder help page lists Gyre as “a cloud-based tool for 24/7 live streaming of pre-recorded videos on YouTube.” That is YouTube’s directory description, not an endorsement or a performance assessment. OneStream Live describes scheduling prerecorded video and continuous 24/7 streaming in its own vendor material; those are vendor-described capabilities, not independently verified reliability or privacy assurances.

Evaluate any provider against the same questions: Can it loop the required files in order? Can it schedule changes and handle the channel’s stream key securely? What storage and deletion controls apply? Who responds to a dropped YouTube connection? What support and service commitments are contractual? What does the plan cost over the school’s full operating period? The available evidence here does not establish a fair current price or reliability comparison between cloud vendors.
