Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →In OBS Studio, go to Settings → Advanced → Network and enable “Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta).” When your connection cannot keep up, OBS lowers the outgoing bitrate rather than dropping frames for that reason. The tradeoff is reduced image quality, and OBS cautions that this setting does not fix the underlying connection problem.
What OBS dynamic bitrate does—and what it cannot do
Dynamic bitrate adjustment acts on the broadcaster’s outgoing stream. If the connection to the streaming server is congested or unstable, OBS can lower the bitrate so it sends less data. That may help preserve continuity when the configured bitrate exceeds what the connection can deliver, but the picture can become less detailed, especially during motion.
OBS describes the option as a fallback when the connection issue cannot be resolved, not as a cure. If the setting is needed often, diagnose the connection and encoder settings as well.
Turn on dynamic bitrate in OBS
- Open OBS Studio and select Settings.
- Choose Advanced, then open the Network section.
- Tick “Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta).” The exact label may vary by installed version; OBS’s documented label includes “(Beta).”
- Select Apply and OK, then test a representative stream and watch OBS’s connection status and dropped-frames counter.
OBS Project’s connection troubleshooting guidance, dated September 30, 2024, says the option lowers bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, rather than dropping frames. It also warns that video quality will be reduced and the root cause remains.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Diagnose dropped frames instead of relying on the toggle
OBS distinguishes dropped frames from rendering or encoding lag: dropped frames indicate that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. A rising dropped-frames counter or a yellow/red connection indicator is a reason to investigate delivery capacity and the route to the ingest server.
Check the ingest server
Try another server or ingest endpoint offered by your streaming service. A poor route to one endpoint can be the problem even when your general internet connection appears usable. For Twitch on Windows, OBS’s guide mentions TwitchTest as a way to identify a server with a better quality score.

Set a bitrate your upload can sustain
OBS’s troubleshooting guide gives 75% of total upload speed as a good starting point for a streaming bitrate. Treat that as a heuristic, not a guarantee: upload speed tests are snapshots, and a stream needs stable capacity over time. Leave headroom for fluctuations and other traffic, and stay within the destination platform’s ingest limits.
For YouTube, its current encoder guidance lists H.264 at 1080p and 60 fps with a 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended ingest bitrate. Those figures are YouTube-specific guidance, not a universal target for every platform or connection. YouTube also specifies CBR for RTMP/RTMPS. Check the platform’s current guidance for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then test before going live.

Compare destinations when useful
OBS suggests testing another streaming destination to help determine whether the issue may be specific to one service. A comparison can narrow the diagnosis, but does not itself resolve a service-specific connection problem.
Review network configuration and software
- On Windows, OBS suggests trying Network Optimizations and TCP pacing.
- Check that Bind to IP is set to Default.
- Try IPv4-only only if needed; if it makes no difference, return the setting to IPv4/IPv6 default.
- Consider whether firewall or security software, a VPN, bundled network software, or outdated network drivers could be interfering. These are possibilities to test, not presumed causes.
Check Wi-Fi, cabling, and network equipment
OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. If you already use Ethernet, a faulty cable, router, modem, network card, or other network device may still be involved. Replacing hardware is not a default fix; OBS advises consulting your internet provider if you are unsure.

Contact your internet provider if the fault persists
After checking OBS settings, the ingest route, local software, and your connection, contact your ISP if dropped frames continue. Congestion or network changes outside your home can affect streaming even when your local setup is configured correctly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Dynamic bitrate is not viewer adaptive quality
OBS dynamic bitrate changes the outgoing feed at the broadcaster’s end. YouTube’s transcoding is a separate, platform-side process: YouTube converts an incoming live stream into multiple output formats so viewers can watch on different devices and connections. Transcoding does not prevent OBS from having trouble delivering the original feed to YouTube.

Viewer buffering can also vary with a person’s location, device, and connection. OBS notes that reducing bitrate, resolution, or frame rate may be a reasonable audience-reach tradeoff, particularly on platforms that do not provide transcoding. Follow the destination’s encoder guidance and test with representative audio and motion before an event; during a YouTube stream, monitor stream health and status messages.
Or let it run in the cloud
