Use its Media Source with Loop for one file, or its VLC Video source with Loop Playlist for a sequence of files. OBS runs on your computer, so a continuous broadcast also depends on that computer, its internet connection, and monitoring.
Choose between one video and a playlist
| What you want to play | OBS source | Loop setting | Extra requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| One video repeating | Media Source | Loop | A local video file in a supported format |
| Several videos in sequence | VLC Video | Loop Playlist | VLC installed; 64-bit VLC is required for 64-bit OBS |
OBS is free and open-source software for streaming and recording. Its documentation lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM among the supported Media Source file types. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation and OBS Studio.
Set up OBS to loop a pre-recorded video
1. Install OBS and prepare the file
Install OBS Studio on the computer that will run the broadcast. Keep the video file available locally and check that it plays correctly before building the scene. If you plan to use a playlist, install VLC first; OBS’s VLC Video source depends on it, and the VLC architecture must match OBS (64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC).
2. Add a source for one repeating video
- In OBS, create or select a scene, then use Sources > + > Media Source.
- Give the source a name and select the local video file in its properties.
- Enable Loop so playback restarts when the file ends. Adjust the source in the preview so it fills or fits the canvas as intended.
OBS describes Loop as making the file play again after playback has completed. The file repeats; it does not by itself establish that the live broadcast will remain connected indefinitely.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Add a looping playlist instead
- Create and check the playlist in VLC, then in OBS go to Sources > + > VLC Video.
- Add the files in the order you want them to play. Confirm the entries point to files available on the streaming computer.
- Enable Loop Playlist in the source properties. This restarts the source when it reaches the end of its media files.
Choose this option when you want multiple recordings to play in sequence. The playlist controls playback order; it does not remove the need to check the resulting picture and sound in OBS.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
1. Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube’s published eligibility guidance says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; it also says streamers must be at least 16 years old. Eligibility and restrictions can change, so check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance before planning a broadcast.

2. Copy the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and create or select the live stream in its live-control workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the stream details using the available method. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it or show it in a recording.
An encoder packages video for delivery to YouTube Live. YouTube’s guidance explains the encoder connection and the stream setup fields in its encoder help and live-stream settings help. Labels and setup screens may change; use the current YouTube Studio values for the stream you created.
3. Preview and start the broadcast
- In OBS, confirm the intended scene is active and the video and audio meters behave as expected.
- Start streaming from OBS, then check the preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room before making the stream public or announcing it.
- Verify that the stream is accessible and keep watching the audio and video during operation. YouTube recommends testing the setup and continuously monitoring stream quality; see its live-streaming tips.
What “continuously” means with a local computer
OBS can repeat media, but repeat playback and uninterrupted delivery are different things. In this setup, OBS, the media files, the computer, power, and internet connection all have to remain available. The reviewed platform and software guidance does not establish guaranteed unattended uptime for OBS or a consumer computer/network. Test the complete setup and plan how you will notice and recover from a failed connection.

If a complete YouTube replay matters, account for YouTube’s archive limit: streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. For details, see YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance. Keep a local recording as a backup if preserving the full program is important, and plan around the 12-hour threshold rather than assuming a longer live broadcast will produce a complete replay.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
- Get the rights first. You need the rights required to broadcast the video and its audio, including music licensing rights. Permission to watch, download, or use a recording privately is not necessarily permission to stream or archive it. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions require live content to comply with the Community Guidelines and require appropriate rights.
- Check every item in a playlist. A single unlicensed track or clip can create a rights issue even if the rest of the playlist is yours. Confirm authorization for both the live transmission and any replay.
- Do not assume looping makes content eligible. A repeated video still has to follow YouTube’s rules. OBS’s ability to play a file is not approval from YouTube or a guarantee about monetization, reach, or archive availability.
Troubleshooting a looped YouTube broadcast
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Video stops after one playback | The source’s loop option is off | Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop, or enable Loop Playlist for VLC Video. |
| VLC Video source is missing or does not work | VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS | Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC. Reopen OBS and inspect the source again. |
| Nothing appears in YouTube’s preview | OBS may not be streaming, or the stream connection details may be wrong | Check OBS’s active scene and stream status, then compare the selected YouTube stream and its URL/key with the values entered in OBS. |
| The picture appears but audio is absent or wrong | The file’s audio or OBS audio routing may not be reaching the stream | Play the file in OBS, watch the audio meters, and check the YouTube preview before relying on the live output. |
| The stream drops or becomes unavailable | The local computer, connection, or encoder may have stopped delivering | Check power, internet, OBS status, and YouTube Live Control Room; restore the encoder connection and verify the preview before considering the broadcast recovered. |
| The full replay is missing | The live stream exceeded YouTube’s stated 12-hour archive threshold | For a complete replay, keep a local recording and plan broadcasts under 12 hours; YouTube says longer streams may not be captured in full. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a home computer and connection to carry the broadcast, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer can be off while the cloud loops the video; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month.
