To stream a pre-recorded video from an external SSD to YouTube Live, connect the drive to a computer, play the file through encoder software, and send the encoded stream to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. The SSD holds the video; it does not encode or send the live stream. You can also use a dedicated hardware encoder, such as the AJA HELO Plus, whose PlayToStream feature YouTube lists for scheduling pre-recorded media without a computer.

What you need

  • A YouTube channel eligible to go live.
  • An external SSD containing the video and a computer that can read and play the file, unless you use a compatible dedicated hardware encoder.
  • Encoder software or hardware that can send a stream to YouTube.
  • A reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the selected stream bitrate.

YouTube describes an encoder as the component that converts video into a digital format for streaming. Its guidance documents the encoder workflow and stream credentials, but does not prescribe a particular SSD, playback application, or computer setup. Check the documentation for the encoder and player you choose.

Prepare the YouTube channel and live stream

  1. Check live-stream eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
  2. Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then create or select the stream. Choose the intended privacy setting and enter any scheduled event details.
  3. Copy the stream credentials. Copy the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into your encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Treat the key like a password: do not share or publish it. YouTube’s encoder walkthrough is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Stream from the SSD using a computer

  1. Connect and check the SSD. Attach it directly or through the connection you intend to use for the event. Confirm the computer can open the video and play its audio. Keep the drive connected throughout playback.
  2. Set up playback and encoding. Configure your chosen software so the SSD video and its audio are the input, and YouTube Live is the output. The exact menus vary by application; YouTube does not specify a universal player or SSD-to-encoder recipe.
  3. Enter YouTube’s stream URL and key. Paste the credentials from Live Control Room into the encoder. Use RTMPS where available; YouTube recommends it as the encrypted option over RTMP.
  4. Choose compatible encoding settings. YouTube’s general encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, the recommended sample rate is 44.1 kHz; YouTube also recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. Select a bitrate using YouTube’s current resolution-specific table: encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
  5. Start the stream and check the preview. Start sending the encoder output, then confirm the video and audio appear correctly in Live Control Room before making the event public or relying on it. Monitor stream health during the event.

Check the SSD and network before going live

Test the complete playback chain

The drive is part of the playback path, so a read or playback stall can interrupt the video reaching the encoder. Test the actual SSD, cable, port, computer, file, and encoder together. Check representative motion and audio, not just whether the file opens. YouTube does not publish a minimum SSD speed, required interface or filesystem, or a comprehensive list of formats supported for reading source media from an external drive. Do not assume every encoder can read USB storage directly; verify compatibility with the chosen software or hardware documentation.

Leave upload headroom

Measure upload speed on the network that will carry the event, particularly if other devices share it. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Account for both streams plus headroom if using primary and backup streams. General tips are available at YouTube’s streaming tips.

  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

Rehearse and monitor

Set up in advance, preview the stream, and watch stream health while it is running. Test the source file from the SSD for long enough to catch playback, audio, or connection interruptions. YouTube’s operational guidance is in its live-streaming tips.

Choose between a computer and dedicated hardware

Option Playback and control Best fit What to verify
Computer and encoder software The computer plays the SSD file and the software sends the encoded output. The exact setup depends on the selected application. You already have a suitable computer and want a flexible software workflow. That the computer can read the drive and sustain playback, encoding, and upload together.
AJA HELO Plus hardware encoder YouTube’s encoder guide lists its PlayToStream functionality for scheduling pre-recorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. You specifically need scheduled playback on dedicated hardware. Confirm the unit’s current availability and the exact SSD, storage, and media-file requirements with AJA. YouTube’s listing does not guarantee compatibility with every drive or format.

The AJA option is a specific hardware route, not a general capability of external SSDs. YouTube’s named-encoder information is in its encoder guide.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification, restrictions in the last 90 days, and whether first-time activation is still pending. YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours.
  • YouTube receives no video: Confirm the encoder is running, its destination uses the correct server URL and stream key, and the stream is selected in Live Control Room.
  • Video freezes or stutters: Check whether playback from the SSD stalls, then test the drive, cable, port, and computer together. Also check that the stream bitrate stays within upload capacity and that the connection has YouTube’s recommended headroom.
  • Video appears but audio is missing or unstable: Verify the playback source includes the intended audio and that the encoder is configured for a supported audio codec, AAC or MP3.
  • The encoder rejects settings or the stream has poor health: Recheck the current YouTube settings for the selected resolution, use supported codecs and frame rates, and set keyframes to two seconds without exceeding four seconds.
  • The hardware route cannot find or play the SSD file: Check the AJA documentation for the exact storage and media requirements. YouTube’s listing of PlayToStream does not establish universal SSD compatibility.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running without leaving a computer at home, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed, and streams to YouTube.
