How to Stream 1080p Video to YouTube with FFmpeg Without Re-encoding

A practical FFmpeg streamcopy template for sending an already encoded 1080p video to YouTube, plus compatibility checks and troubleshooting.

You can stream an existing 1080p file to YouTube with FFmpeg without re-encoding if its video and audio streams are compatible with YouTube’s live ingest and the chosen output container. Use -c copy to pass the existing encoded streams; it preserves the source rather than making a non-1080p video into 1080p.

Stream a local file with FFmpeg streamcopy

First create a live stream in YouTube Live Control Room and retrieve the stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains where to enter those values in encoder software. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your stream.

With FFmpeg installed and a compatible source file ready, use this as a starting template:

ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c copy -f flv "<YouTube stream URL>/<stream key>"
  • Replace input.mp4 with the path to your video.
  • Replace the destination placeholders with the stream URL and key shown in Live Control Room. Use the exact ingest destination YouTube provides; do not publish the command with your real key in a script, screenshot, or shared terminal history.
  • -re reads the file at its native playback pace rather than sending it as quickly as possible.
  • -map 0:v:0 selects the first video stream. -map 0:a:0? selects the first audio stream if one exists; the question mark makes that audio selection optional.
  • -c copy streamcopies the selected streams. -f flv asks FFmpeg to mux them into an FLV output for the RTMP-style destination; it does not convert the codecs.

This is a practical template synthesized from FFmpeg’s documented streamcopy syntax and YouTube’s encoder setup instructions, not a guarantee for every file, FFmpeg build, or ingest configuration. Check the source and test the ingest before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast.

Check that the file is suitable before streaming

Resolution and frame rate

Inspect the source before starting. Streamcopy retains the encoded video’s resolution and frame rate. A 720p file remains 720p; a file with a different frame rate is not converted to 30 or 60 fps by this command. To make a picture 1920×1080, crop it, add graphics, or change its frame rate, you must decode and process it instead of using video streamcopy.

Video and audio codecs

YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. Streamcopy cannot change a source codec. Confirm that the file’s actual streams are accepted for the ingest path you plan to use; an MP4 extension alone does not establish that its codecs and stream properties are suitable.

Bitrate and keyframes

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. Streamcopy retains the source’s encoding characteristics instead of applying these recommendations. The current YouTube Help live encoder page gives these H.264 1080p figures (page accessed 2026):

Output target YouTube H.264 guidance
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps recommended; 5 Mbps minimum
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps recommended; 6 Mbps minimum

These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not settings that the command applies to an existing file. If the source’s bitrate or keyframe interval does not fit your target, streamcopy will not retune it.

Container and muxing compatibility

FFmpeg can copy packets only when the selected streams can be muxed into the requested output. Its documentation warns that streamcopy may fail if information required by the target container is unavailable. Changing the output container alone will not fix an incompatible codec or stream property.

What streamcopy does—and what it cannot do

FFmpeg defines streamcopy as copying packets without decoding, filtering, or encoding. The method is fast and avoids generational quality loss from a new encode, but it cannot alter the picture or audio. Filters operate on decoded frames and are therefore unavailable while copying that stream.

  • Use streamcopy when the source already has the resolution, frame rate, codecs, and encoding properties you need.
  • Use transcoding when you need scaling, cropping, an overlay, frame-rate conversion, color processing, or codec conversion. Those operations require decoding and re-encoding at least the affected stream.

YouTube also transcodes incoming live streams into multiple output formats for viewers. That processing happens downstream; it does not mean FFmpeg re-encodes the source while sending it.

Test the YouTube ingest before going live

  1. Start the command using a test stream or an unlisted/private broadcast as appropriate for your channel and event.
  2. Open YouTube Live Control Room and wait for the incoming stream and health information.
  3. Test with representative movement and audio, not only a static opening frame. Confirm the picture, sound, and stream health remain acceptable.
  4. Review YouTube’s warnings and health messages. If ingest fails, use the troubleshooting checks below before changing the source or command.

YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health. Its current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP.

Troubleshoot common streamcopy problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
FFmpeg reports an error while opening or writing the output The destination URL or key is incorrect, unavailable, or malformed. Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room and check the destination syntax. Keep the key private.
FFmpeg reports that a stream cannot be copied or muxed The source stream or its properties may not fit the selected output container. Inspect the input streams and FFmpeg error. A container change may help only if the streams themselves are compatible; it cannot convert a codec.
YouTube does not show a healthy incoming stream The codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, frame rate, destination, or connection may not meet ingest needs. Check Live Control Room health messages and compare the source’s properties with YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Run a representative test.
The video is not actually 1080p The source was encoded at another resolution. Streamcopy cannot scale it. Create a properly encoded 1080p version before streaming if 1080p is required.
There is no audio, or FFmpeg cannot map the audio stream The file may lack an audio stream, use an unsupported codec, or have multiple tracks with a different stream order. Inspect the file’s streams and map the intended track. The optional audio map in the template permits a video-only file, but it does not convert audio.
