You can turn audio files into a radio-style YouTube Live broadcast by preparing a continuous audio sequence, pairing it with a still image or other video, and using FFmpeg to encode and send the result to YouTube’s RTMP or RTMPS ingest. The exact FFmpeg command depends on your files, installed build, and chosen visual; there is no single reliable command for every setup. You also need a YouTube channel eligible for live streaming and an upload connection that can sustain the stream.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guide explains how to get started; availability and eligibility can depend on channel status and YouTube’s current requirements.
- The audio files you have permission to broadcast, and a plan for whether they should play once or repeat.
- FFmpeg installed with the input-format, encoder, and network-protocol support your workflow needs. Builds differ, so check the documentation for your version at FFmpeg Documentation and FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.
- A still image, simple loop, or other visual if you want a video picture alongside the audio. An audio-only input does not by itself define the video feed for this workflow.
- A stable upload connection with spare capacity beyond the stream’s total bitrate.
Before streaming, confirm that you have the necessary rights to every recording and visual. A live broadcast can still raise copyright issues, and using audio you did not create or license is not made safe merely by streaming it through FFmpeg. YouTube’s copyright safety checklist can help you review rights questions.
Prepare the audio and decide how it should play
Choose a finite playlist or a repeating broadcast
Decide whether the program should stop after the selected files or loop continuously. These are different playback goals: a finite sequence ends when its inputs are exhausted, while a repeating sequence needs a repeat mechanism in the chosen FFmpeg workflow. Plan the behavior before going live, and test it long enough to confirm that transitions and repeat points behave as expected.
Check compatibility before combining files
Inspect the formats and stream properties of your audio files. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can be appropriate when inputs are compatible, but different codecs, stream layouts, or other properties may call for filtering or re-encoding instead. The correct choice depends on the actual files and your FFmpeg version; consult the official format and filter documentation rather than assuming one concat command will work for every playlist.

If you re-encode, choose a consistent output audio format suitable for YouTube’s live ingest. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS and recommends stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps in its advanced settings. These are published recommendations, not a requirement that every source file already use those settings.
Choose a visual and live output settings
Provide a video stream
For a radio-style broadcast, you might use a still image, a simple looping visual, or another visual layer. Set the output resolution and frame rate explicitly. The filter or image-loop command depends on your intended visual and FFmpeg version; verify the relevant input and filter options in the FFmpeg documentation, then test the result in YouTube’s preview.

Match YouTube’s current encoder recommendations
YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its stereo-audio advanced guidance lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. For video bitrate, use the value in YouTube’s table for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate—not a generic figure or an upload bitrate. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions; specifications can change.
Use an encoder that your installed FFmpeg build actually provides. A supported codec on YouTube’s side does not guarantee that your local FFmpeg build includes an encoder for it or can encode it at your chosen settings.

Get your YouTube ingest URL and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and create or select the live event in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe the workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event, then configure the FFmpeg output destination with them. The exact URL format and command syntax depend on the ingest details YouTube provides and the options supported by your FFmpeg build.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it in a tutorial, screenshot, source-control repository, or publicly shared log. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s stream-settings guidance.
Build and test the FFmpeg workflow
A live command needs to read your selected audio sequence and any visual source, map the intended audio and video streams, encode compatible live audio and video, apply the bitrate and keyframe settings for your selected output, and send the result to YouTube’s ingest destination. Because the input formats and visual differ, treat the following as a checklist of command components—not a copy-paste command:
- Input: the playlist or audio input arrangement that matches your files and whether the broadcast is finite or repeating.
- Visual: the still-image or video input and any required loop or filter behavior.
- Mapping: explicit selection of the intended audio and video streams so an unintended stream is not sent.
- Encoding: an available FFmpeg encoder and a YouTube-listed codec, with CBR and the settings for the selected resolution and frame rate.
- Timing: a two-second keyframe interval where supported, and never more than four seconds, following YouTube’s recommendation.
- Output: the RTMP/RTMPS destination and stream key supplied by YouTube, handled as a secret.
Do not paste a real key into a public command example. If you test locally with a placeholder, use an unmistakable value such as YOUR_STREAM_KEY; do not mistake it for a working credential. Where practical, pass the real key through a local configuration or other private method rather than saving it in a shared script or shell history. Check the FFmpeg documentation for the syntax your installed version supports.

- Run a local check of the command and verify that FFmpeg recognizes the inputs, selected encoders, and output protocol. FFmpeg distributions can differ in compiled-in encoder and protocol support.
- Start a private or unlisted test event and wait for YouTube’s incoming preview. Check that audio is audible and stable, the visual is correct, and the intended sequence or loop is playing.
- Review YouTube’s stream health and any warning messages before making the broadcast public. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring the health indicators while streaming; see YouTube’s streaming tips.
- When finished, stop the encoder cleanly and confirm in Live Control Room that the event has ended. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume an archive for a longer stream. See Manage live stream settings.
Keep the connection and stream secure
Leave upload headroom
YouTube recommends upload capacity 20% above the total stream bitrate. Add the audio and video bitrate when estimating the total, then apply that margin; shared or unstable connections can still interrupt a broadcast. Lowering the video resolution or bitrate to a level supported by your connection may help, but use YouTube’s codec-specific live table to choose valid settings. Keep credentials out of public places
A stream key grants access to the ingest setup, so do not share it when asking for help. Redact keys and private ingest details from screenshots and logs. Reset the key in YouTube Studio if you believe it has been exposed.

Troubleshoot common failures
