How to Keep an FFmpeg YouTube Stream Within YouTube Live Bitrate Limits

YouTube Live bitrate guidance depends on the codec and ingestion resolution and frame rate. Use the matching published value, configure CBR and two-second keyframes, then test and monitor the stream.

To keep an FFmpeg stream within YouTube Live’s published bitrate guidance, match the outgoing video bitrate to the stream’s ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe frequency (no more than four seconds). Its bitrate table gives both minimum and recommended figures, not one universal cap.

For example, YouTube’s current live encoder settings list H.264 at 1080p30 as a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; at 1080p60, the figures are 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. Choose the row for the signal FFmpeg actually sends to YouTube, then test the complete stream over the connection you intend to use.

How to choose the right YouTube Live bitrate

Use YouTube’s live encoder settings table, not its separate recommendations for prerecorded-video uploads. The figures below are YouTube’s published ingestion settings, checked October 3, 2026. “Minimum” and “recommended” are distinct values; neither should be treated as a universal limit for every stream.

Ingestion resolution and frame rate H.264 minimum H.264 recommended AV1 or H.265 minimum AV1 or H.265 recommended
2160p (4K) at 60 fps 14 Mbps 50 Mbps 10 Mbps 35 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 30 fps 11 Mbps 42 Mbps 8 Mbps 30 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 8 Mbps 34 Mbps 6 Mbps 24 Mbps
1440p at 30 fps 7 Mbps 21 Mbps 5 Mbps 15 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps 4 Mbps 12 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps
480p at 30 fps 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps 0.3 Mbps 3 Mbps
360p at 30 fps 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps 0.3 Mbps 3 Mbps

Source: YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. The table is based on the incoming, or ingestion, signal. Select the column for the codec FFmpeg sends; do not read across the AV1/H.265 and H.264 columns as if they were interchangeable.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Recommended bitrate versus minimum

Use the recommended figure as the target when your sustained upload connection can carry the stream reliably. The minimum is a lower published value, not a guarantee that a stream will look good or remain stable in every situation. If your connection cannot sustain the recommended setting, choose a lower ingestion resolution or frame rate and use the corresponding row rather than selecting a bitrate from a different mode.

Video bitrate is not total network traffic

The table’s video bitrate does not include audio or transport overhead. Your connection needs capacity beyond the video target to carry the full stream. YouTube advises testing upload bitrate and matching stream quality to connection reliability; a speed-test result alone does not establish that a connection will sustain a live stream continuously.

YouTube’s encoder settings to account for

YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists the following protocol, codec, and stream settings:

  • Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS.
  • Video codecs: H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1, depending on the encoder and ingest configuration.
  • Bitrate mode: CBR.
  • Keyframes: two-second frequency recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Frame rate: up to 60 fps.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3. YouTube lists 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1 surround. Over RTMP/RTMPS, 5.1 is supported only with AAC.
  • Additional recommendations: square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. Use 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz 5.1; Rec. 709 for SDR; 8-bit SDR or 10-bit HDR. YouTube recommends H.265 for HDR and does not support AV1 for HDR.

These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee that every FFmpeg build or encoder exposes settings under the same option names. Confirm the exact flags and behavior for your installed FFmpeg version and selected encoder.

Set up and test the FFmpeg stream

  1. Identify the actual output mode. Establish the resolution, frame rate, and codec that the outgoing FFmpeg stream will use. Choose the matching row and codec column in YouTube’s table.
  2. Pick a bitrate your connection can sustain. Prefer the recommended value when your upload connection can reliably carry the video, audio, and overhead. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” If the connection cannot sustain the chosen mode, lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate as appropriate, then retest using the matching table row.
  3. Configure CBR and keyframes. Set the selected encoder for constant-rate behavior and a two-second keyframe interval, without exceeding four seconds. Check the option names and actual behavior against the documentation for your FFmpeg version and encoder; YouTube’s settings page does not supply a universal FFmpeg command.
  4. Send a representative test stream. Test before the event over the intended internet connection, with audio and movement comparable to the real broadcast. YouTube specifically advises including both in the test.
  5. Monitor YouTube’s stream health. During the broadcast, check the stream-health status and messages in YouTube’s live control room. If you see problems, adjust the mode or bitrate to fit the sustained connection and test the revised configuration.

Troubleshooting bitrate and stream-health problems

Symptom What to check Practical next step
YouTube reports unstable or insufficient stream health Whether sustained upload capacity can carry video, audio, and overhead at the selected mode Test the connection, then lower the ingestion resolution, frame rate, or bitrate as appropriate. Use the table row that matches the revised output and retest.
The chosen target seems inconsistent with YouTube’s table Whether you used the correct codec column and ingestion resolution/frame rate Verify what FFmpeg actually sends, then select the corresponding table entry. Do not substitute prerecorded-upload recommendations.
The stream does not follow the intended bitrate or keyframe interval Whether the selected encoder supports the flags and whether the installed FFmpeg build interprets them as expected Check documentation for that build and encoder, inspect the output, and run a test stream before going live.
Video is acceptable but audio is missing or problematic Audio codec, channel layout, and bitrate settings Use AAC or MP3 within YouTube’s listed audio guidance; for RTMP/RTMPS 5.1, use AAC.
Quality or stability changes during motion-heavy scenes Whether the pre-event test included movement and audio representative of the broadcast Repeat the test with similar content and monitor YouTube’s health messages while adjusting the chosen mode.
