A YouTube playlist loop only repeats playback for viewers; it does not keep a live broadcast running when the computer sending it loses power. To protect a live video sequence, use a UPS to bridge brief outages, then configure and test recovery for your computer and encoder. For a stream that should continue without a home computer, a cloud service such as StreamNeo is another option.
First, clarify what “playlist” means
If you mean a YouTube watch-page playlist, its loop setting repeats playback on a viewer’s device. It does not create or restore a live broadcast. If you mean a sequence of prerecorded videos being sent continuously as a YouTube Live stream, an encoder must keep sending the video to YouTube. That is the setup a power cut can interrupt. Prevent a brief power cut with a UPS
A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) can temporarily power your streaming computer and the network equipment it needs, such as a router or modem. It may keep the encoder online during a short local outage, but it cannot provide indefinite power or prevent an interruption if your internet service also fails.
- List the equipment that must stay on. Include the computer running the encoder and the network devices needed for its internet connection.
- Size the UPS for the combined load and the runtime you need. Check the UPS specifications and the actual power draw of your equipment. Do not assume a particular runtime without checking both.
- Connect and test the complete setup. Confirm that the computer and network equipment remain powered and that the encoder continues sending video during a simulated loss of mains power. Test before relying on the arrangement unattended.
A UPS only bridges the outage while its battery lasts and the internet connection remains available. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend testing encoders and monitoring stream health.

Recover after a longer outage or full shutdown
When a power cut lasts beyond the UPS runtime, keeping the stream going depends on what happens after power returns: the computer must start, the encoder must launch and resume correctly, and YouTube must receive the feed. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings govern parts of the broadcast workflow; they do not power on a failed computer or guarantee that an encoder application relaunches.
- Prepare the YouTube stream and encoder in advance. Keep the stream URL and stream key available to the encoder, and store the key securely. YouTube documents these details in Manage live stream settings.
- Check the stream’s auto-start and auto-stop choices. YouTube says, “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” These controls do not replace computer or encoder recovery.
- Test your specific restart sequence. Verify whether the computer starts after power is restored and whether your encoder relaunches with the intended stream settings. The exact steps depend on your operating system, encoder and stream configuration; YouTube does not document one universal reboot-and-resume procedure for every setup.
- Check both the encoder and the public stream. After a test outage, confirm that the encoder is sending and that the YouTube watch page shows the live broadcast. Continue monitoring stream health during operation.
Do not assume that a computer reboot automatically restores the live feed. Test the full power-loss and recovery sequence on your own equipment before depending on it.

Add failover only after testing the primary setup
A UPS addresses a brief loss of local power. Computer and encoder startup automation can help after power returns, but must be configured and tested for your setup. A backup encoder or internet route may add another layer, but it also needs a separate, validated failover design.
YouTube recommends testing encoder failover. Its guidance describes stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and checking that the player rolls to the backup encoder. Treat this as a test of the failover setup, not as protection against every power or internet failure. Follow YouTube’s encoder and stream-health guidance.

Keep a recording as a separate safeguard
A recording can help preserve content if a live broadcast is interrupted, but it cannot keep the broadcast live. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local backup: “We recommend recording a local archive as a backup.” Read YouTube’s archive guidance and arrange a local recording workflow if losing the source recording would matter.
Do not mistake viewer controls for recovery
Playlist looping repeats playback on the viewer’s device; DVR lets viewers pause and resume a live stream. Neither restarts an encoder that has stopped sending video. YouTube also notes that DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. See its guidance on DVR for live streams.
