A reconnecting YouTube stream does not, by itself, prove that power is the cause. The break may be in the encoder or home equipment, the internet connection, or YouTube’s ingest path. During the next interruption, capture the timestamp and compare YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health errors with the encoder’s status before buying backup equipment or changing bitrate.
First determine what is actually disconnecting
Separate an interruption in the incoming stream from a problem viewers have playing it. A server, modem, or router restart points toward a local equipment or power interruption; an encoder disconnect without a machine restart may instead involve the network or streaming service. Viewer reports of buffering alone do not establish that the incoming stream ended.
- Record the symptoms and time. Note whether the encoder says it disconnected or reconnected, Live Control Room shows an error, viewers report buffering, or the server or network equipment restarted. Record timestamps so you can compare the reports.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Look at the stream-health display and its timestamped errors for the event. YouTube distinguishes critical errors, which can prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems, from moderate warnings that can degrade quality. Use the error shown at the time rather than inferring a cause from the word “reconnecting.” See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance and its stream-health error explanations.
- Inspect the encoder and server. Confirm the encoder is current, review its outgoing-stream status, check CPU load, and inspect a local recording if one is available. A healthy-looking encoder is not proof that the internet path is healthy; YouTube advises checking outbound connection strength as well.
- Compare the incident with power events. Check whether the server, modem, router, or other required devices rebooted or lost their connection at that time. If they stayed on, investigate connectivity and encoder evidence rather than assuming the power supply was responsible.
If you use OBS, read its connection indicators
In OBS, watch the “Dropped frames” counter and the connection square while streaming. OBS says: “When the "Dropped frames" counter is increasing and the connection square is yellow or red, this means that your connection to the server* isn’t stable or that it can’t keep up with your set bitrate.” This is evidence of a connection problem or insufficient capacity for the configured bitrate, not proof of a power failure. If the indicators worsen during an event, note the bitrate and timestamps, then test upload connection strength under the same normal household load. YouTube recommends contacting your internet service provider if tests indicate a connection issue: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.

Match the fix to the failed layer
When local power is interrupting equipment
A UPS or inverter can keep equipment powered through some local outages, but it must cover the whole chain needed to stream: server or encoder, modem, router, and any other essential network device. Backing up only the server may not help if the router or modem loses power and the stream loses connectivity.
Size backup power from the combined load and the outage duration you need to cover. There is no reliable runtime recommendation without those details. Test the actual setup: confirm that the power transfer does not reboot equipment and that the internet connection remains usable while running on backup power.

When the internet or ISP path is failing
A UPS cannot keep an unavailable ISP connection online. Test outbound connectivity during normal use, review encoder indicators, and ask the ISP to investigate persistent faults. If local equipment remains powered during a disconnect, treat the ISP or upstream path as a separate possibility rather than adding battery capacity alone.
When evidence points to neither power nor connectivity
Use the timestamped YouTube health error, encoder status, CPU load, and any local recording to narrow the cause. A critical stream-health error, a moderate warning, and rising OBS dropped frames indicate different things; preserve the exact message instead of treating all reconnects as the same fault.
