A running FFmpeg process alone does not prove YouTube is receiving or decoding the feed.
What you need before testing
- An encoder stream selected or created in YouTube Live Control Room, with its current stream URL and stream key.
- A Linux VPS with FFmpeg installed and outbound connectivity to the endpoint YouTube assigned.
- A local test file containing both video and audio, if you want to check both parts of the stream.
For a scheduled test, choose private or unlisted visibility as appropriate. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses the server URL and stream key shown for the selected stream; do not substitute a guessed ingest address. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
Set up the test stream in YouTube
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create an encoder stream or select the stream you intend to test.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key displayed for that stream. Keep the key private: it is a credential. Do not put it in a public screenshot, shared support log, or copied command that may be saved in shell history.
- If the stream is scheduled, set its visibility to private or unlisted if that suits your test. When YouTube later shows a preview, a scheduled stream may still need you to click Go live before it is published.
Send a test feed from FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s documented RTMP pattern reads an input in real time and sends FLV output to an RTMP destination. The example below is generic: replace the destination with the exact endpoint details YouTube displays for your selected stream. YouTube’s interface and the chosen protocol determine how the URL and key should be used together, so do not assume every displayed URL uses the same format.
ffmpeg -re -i test.mp4 -f flv 'rtmp://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY'This is the generic example in the FFmpeg protocol documentation, not a verified YouTube command with a real ingest host or key. Treat the key as secret. Prefer entering it through a protected method rather than leaving it embedded in a command that could be recorded in shell history or logs.

Use an encoding profile YouTube accepts
YouTube’s current general encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS with H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR bitrate encoding; and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. For a straightforward compatibility check, use a supported SDR profile rather than an advanced HDR path. Select bitrate guidance for the actual resolution, frame rate, and codec in YouTube’s encoder settings table; there is no single bitrate that applies to every test.
Prefer the assigned RTMPS endpoint when supported
RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. YouTube recommends encrypting the stream and says to use the correct RTMPS URL. Use the address YouTube provides rather than changing it to a guessed endpoint. If an SSL error occurs, first verify the URL scheme and endpoint configuration; YouTube’s RTMPS guidance also discusses trying port 443 when the URL and port arrangement warrant it. Confirm your FFmpeg build supports the transport before ruling out the VPS network.

Verify that YouTube receives the stream
- Watch FFmpeg’s terminal output for connection failures, write errors, or an early exit.
- Open the selected stream in Live Control Room and wait for YouTube’s preview to appear.
- Check the stream health status and any messages. Confirm the preview contains the expected video and audio, rather than relying only on FFmpeg reporting that it is running.
- For a scheduled stream, use the preview to verify the feed before clicking Go live if you intend to publish it. YouTube recommends testing before a live event and monitoring stream health and messages during it; see YouTube’s streaming tips.
- When the check is complete, stop FFmpeg and end the test deliberately in Live Control Room if needed.
RTMP and RTMPS, and choosing a test source

Troubleshooting a failed test
Authentication or startup failure
Check that the key belongs to the stream currently selected in Live Control Room. If you reset the key, update FFmpeg to use the new one; the old key will no longer be the current credential. YouTube explains key management in Manage live stream settings.
RTMPS or TLS connection error
Verify that you copied the RTMPS URL from YouTube, that the scheme is correct, and that the installed FFmpeg build supports the transport. Check the endpoint and port configuration before concluding that the VPS provider is blocking traffic. Follow YouTube’s RTMPS instructions rather than guessing an alternate host.

FFmpeg runs but YouTube shows no preview
A live process does not establish that YouTube accepted and decoded the feed. Check FFmpeg’s output format and chosen audio/video codecs, then check the selected stream’s preview, health, and messages in Live Control Room. The general compatibility guidance is in YouTube’s encoder settings.
Timeout or connection failure from the VPS
Test outbound connectivity from the exact VPS instance and check its provider firewall rules. A provider-specific egress policy or route may be responsible, but YouTube’s general help does not establish the policy, throughput, packet loss, or route quality of any particular Indian VPS. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide recommends checking encoder setup and outbound internet strength; the actual VPS path must be tested directly.

Copyright and stream readiness
A successful technical test does not grant permission to broadcast the media in the input file. Before publishing, confirm you have the rights needed for the video and audio, and review YouTube’s applicable channel and live-stream policies. A private or unlisted test is useful for checking delivery, but it should not be treated as a substitute for permission to use the content publicly.
