What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Use two recovery layers, because they solve different failures: FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can retry a failing network output while FFmpeg is still running; a host-level supervisor must restart FFmpeg if the process exits. A stalled process may need a separate liveness check. For a 4K/60 fps stream, also verify the output codec, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current encoder settings.
First identify what stopped
“The stream stopped” can describe three different conditions. Check the FFmpeg process and its logs before choosing a fix:
- FFmpeg is alive, but output is failing: the encoder process continues, while its connection to YouTube or another RTMP destination has failed. FIFO output recovery may retry the connection.
- FFmpeg exited: FIFO cannot restart a process that no longer exists. Use an external service manager or watchdog to relaunch it.
- FFmpeg is alive but stalled: a process-exit policy alone may not detect that it has stopped making progress. If this matters for your deployment, configure an independent liveness or progress check.
These layers are complementary, not interchangeable. A retry policy for output does not supervise the process; a process supervisor does not necessarily repair an output connection while FFmpeg remains alive.
Configure FFmpeg to recover from temporary output failures
FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer is documented as an approach for network-output recovery. The FFmpeg manual’s illustrative RTMP example is:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This is the manual’s example, not a tested YouTube command. Replace the input, output URL, codecs, and stream maps with the values for your setup. Keep your actual stream key private: do not publish it in scripts, screenshots, or logs. See the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation and check the version-matched manual for your installed build.
What the recovery options do
-f fifo -fifo_format flvuses the FIFO muxer with FLV as the underlying output format.-attempt_recovery 1enables attempts to recover a failed output.-recovery_wait_time 1sets this example’s retry wait to one second. The documented default is five seconds.-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1allows queued packets to be dropped instead of blocking the encoder if the FIFO fills. It can keep processing moving, but content may be omitted during an interruption.
The documented default for max_recovery_attempts is unlimited (0), and restart_with_keyframe defaults to false. Do not assume your installed build accepts or behaves exactly as expected for every option: check it with ffmpeg -h muxer=fifo and the manual matching your FFmpeg version.

Restart FFmpeg when the process exits
When FFmpeg exits, an external supervisor must start it again. The appropriate configuration depends on where FFmpeg runs: for example, Linux systemd, Windows service or task tooling, macOS launchd, or a container orchestrator. The available evidence does not establish one universal configuration or supervisor product for every environment, so use the documentation for your operating system or runtime.
Set a deliberate restart delay or backoff, retain logs, and decide whether repeated failures should be limited or alerted. A basic shell loop can relaunch FFmpeg after exit, but by itself it may restart too quickly, miss a process that is alive but stalled, and make exit diagnostics harder to follow. If hangs are in scope, add a separate check for process progress rather than relying only on exit detection.

Match the 4K/60 fps output to YouTube’s settings
YouTube’s official encoder settings, accessed in 2026, list the following 2160p/60 fps ingest recommendations:
| Ingest codec | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
The bitrate figures are YouTube’s published settings, not a guarantee that your encoder, local network, or upload connection can sustain them. YouTube lists CBR encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS, while listing RTMP/RTMPS as supported protocols.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
At 60 fps, a two-second GOP corresponds to 120 frames, so -g 120 is the equivalent value only if the actual output frame rate is 60 fps. Confirm the produced resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval; do not copy a GOP value from a 30-fps example without adjusting it. YouTube says it detects encoder settings automatically by default, and recommends testing with representative motion and audio and monitoring stream health and messages.
Verify the YouTube stream after recovery
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses the Live server URL and stream key in the encoder. When restarting an already configured stream, preserve the intended stream and encoder configuration, then check Live Control Room for the expected preview and stream health. The official guide says to wait for a preview and then click Go live in its scheduled-stream workflow; do not assume every automatic restart behaves identically for scheduled and unscheduled streams. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

Troubleshoot a stopped or interrupted stream
- Check process status and logs. Establish whether FFmpeg exited, is running but stalled, or remains active while the output has failed.
- If output failed but FFmpeg is alive, check whether your FFmpeg build supports the FIFO muxer recovery options and review the logs for retry behavior.
- If FFmpeg exited, confirm that the host’s supervisor is configured to relaunch it with a considered delay or backoff and useful retained logs.
- If FFmpeg is alive without progress, use an independent liveness or progress check if your setup needs to detect that condition.
- Check the YouTube destination and output. Verify the intended server URL and stream key, then confirm actual 3840×2160 resolution, 60 fps, codec, CBR target, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s published settings.
- Test before an important broadcast. Confirm that recovery returns the expected preview and healthy stream in Live Control Room, and review any messages shown there.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos without leaving your own FFmpeg host running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera, and is for YouTube only.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs from the cloud.
- Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60 fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start the free day at StreamNeo registration.
