First find out whether “dropped frames” is a warning from YouTube Live Control Room or a message in FFmpeg’s own output. They describe different parts of the stream path, and neither automatically means FFmpeg’s loop option is at fault. Check the timestamped warning, local output, encoder load, stream settings and sustained upload capacity before changing the command.
Identify where the dropped-frame warning comes from
In YouTube Live Control Room, record the complete stream-health message, its timestamp and whether YouTube marks it critical or moderate. The dashboard checks the incoming stream and timestamps errors; red errors are critical and yellow errors are moderate. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting instructions and its live-stream error reference.
Separately, inspect FFmpeg’s console output or log around the same time. A YouTube warning concerns what YouTube is receiving; a local FFmpeg message may concern encoding, timestamps or input/output timing. Keep the two records distinct until you establish whether they coincide.
Use local output to choose the first troubleshooting branch
If the picture or sound is already bad locally
Check the local preview or a local recording, if available, and examine FFmpeg’s messages and CPU load. YouTube recommends looking for encoder errors and high CPU usage when the stream looks or sounds poor locally; it also suggests checking a local archive and testing another encoder as a diagnostic. These checks point toward the source, encoding capacity or timing, though a network problem can occur at the same time.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Confirm the source file plays smoothly and has the expected audio and video.
- Look for encoder errors, timing messages and sustained high CPU use at the warning timestamp.
- Review explicit frame-rate conversion and synchronization options in the command.
If local output looks and sounds healthy
Investigate the outbound connection and YouTube ingest settings. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says a healthy-looking local stream can still have an outbound internet connection issue. Test upload performance and stability, and compare sustained throughput with the configured stream bitrate. A high average speed alone does not establish that upload is stable over time; this comparison is a practical diagnostic, not a YouTube pass/fail threshold.
If you are using Wi-Fi, a temporary wired Ethernet test can help isolate the local wireless link. It will not by itself resolve ISP congestion, encoder overload or incorrect stream settings.

Match FFmpeg output to YouTube’s ingest settings
Check the actual output against YouTube’s current encoder settings. YouTube identifies incorrect bitrate, frame rate, resolution, format or keyframe frequency as possible causes of ingest or delivery problems.
| Setting | What to check | YouTube guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Bitrate mode | Whether the output uses constant bitrate (CBR) | CBR is recommended. |
| Bitrate | Match the chosen video codec, resolution and frame rate to the current YouTube table | For H.264, YouTube lists 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 8 Mbps for 720p30. These are recommendations, not guarantees of available upload capacity. |
| Keyframe interval | Check the encoder’s keyframe cadence | 2 seconds recommended; 4 seconds maximum. |
| Frame rate | Compare the outgoing rate with the configured stream and source | RTMP/RTMPS supports up to 60 fps. |
| Format and resolution | Verify the actual output codec/container and dimensions against the settings selected for the stream | Use the current encoder-settings page for supported formats and resolution-specific details. |
| Audio | Check that the audio format and output are valid and that sound is present | Use YouTube’s current encoder-settings guidance. |
The examples and limits above are YouTube recommendations, not a diagnosis of your particular warning. Its bitrate table can change, so consult the current page rather than carrying one bitrate into every command.

Check input pacing and frame-rate conversion
For a video file being played as a live stream
FFmpeg’s -re input option reads at the input’s native frame rate. FFmpeg documents it as useful when output packet timing matters, such as live streaming. Place it as an input option for the file that needs pacing; confirm the ordering and option support in the documentation for your installed build.
For a genuine live input
Do not add -re indiscriminately to a capture device or an already-live input. FFmpeg warns that a low read rate on an actual capture device or live stream may cause packet loss. See the FFmpeg documentation for the -readrate option and related input behavior.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For an explicit output frame rate
Inspect any -r setting and frame-synchronization behavior before treating a reported frame count as a network problem. FFmpeg documents that constant-frame-rate (CFR) output can duplicate or drop frames to reach the requested rate; variable-frame-rate (VFR) behavior may drop frames to prevent duplicate timestamps; passthrough retains demuxer timestamps. The appropriate choice depends on the source and intended output. Consult the installed version’s documentation; FFmpeg’s online documentation tracks its newest revision, and older packaged builds may differ.
Retest without changing several things at once
- Save the exact FFmpeg command with the stream key redacted, the FFmpeg version/build, and the source media’s resolution and frame rate. Check the installed version with
ffmpeg -version. - Record the full YouTube warning and timestamp, plus relevant FFmpeg log lines from the same period.
- Choose the branch supported by evidence: local output and encoder health, or settings and outbound connection. Remember that problems can coexist.
- Change one evidenced cause at a time, then repeat a preflight test with motion and audio similar to the intended stream.
- Monitor Live Control Room’s stream health during the test. YouTube specifically recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health.
If you need to escalate the problem, include the redacted command, FFmpeg version/build, source resolution and frame rate, relevant timestamped log lines, the complete YouTube warning and upload-test details. Do not share your stream key.

Common troubleshooting outcomes
| What you observe | Likely area to investigate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Local picture or audio is poor; encoder errors or high CPU are present | Source or encoding capacity | Check the source, encoder messages, system load and frame-rate conversion. |
| Local output is healthy, but YouTube reports a stream-health problem | Ingest settings or outbound connection | Compare codec, format, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe cadence with YouTube’s current guidance; test sustained upload. |
| Frames appear duplicated or dropped after setting an output rate | Frame-rate conversion or synchronization | Review -r and CFR, VFR or passthrough behavior in the installed FFmpeg build. |
| Packet loss occurs with a genuine capture device or live input after adding a low read rate | Input pacing | Review use of -re/-readrate; FFmpeg cautions against a low read rate for actual capture or live inputs. |
| Warnings recur despite healthy local output and apparently adequate average upload | Intermittent outbound instability or a setting mismatch remains possible | Compare sustained connection behavior and the exact dashboard warning with the configured output. |
