If an OBS profile replacement removed your YouTube stream settings, first check whether the old profile or a JSON backup is still available. If not, get the current stream key from YouTube Studio and enter it in OBS—or reset the key and enter the newly generated one. Your scenes are stored separately, so losing a profile does not necessarily mean losing your scene collection.
First, check whether the old OBS profile is still available
A stream key is an encoder credential, not your video, scenes, or other channel content. OBS profiles store streaming configuration, including Stream settings and connected-account information; scenes are stored in separate Scene Collections. OBS’s profile documentation, dated 2022-01-14, describes these settings and profile import/export: OBS Profiles. Menu labels can vary by installed OBS version.
- In OBS, open the Profile menu and look for the profile you used before the replacement.
- If you find it, select it, then open Settings > Stream. Check whether OBS has the expected YouTube account connection or stream key.
- If you have a profile backup, use OBS’s profile import option to import its JSON file, then check Settings > Stream again. Profile import restores profile settings; it does not restore scenes.
If the old profile or a usable backup is present, recovering that configuration may let you keep using the same connection or key. If neither is available, retrieve the key from YouTube Studio instead.
Restore the stream key from YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create > Go Live.
- In Live Control Room, choose Stream.
- Find the stream key and use the copy control to copy the current key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” See YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. If you use a manually entered key, select YouTube as the service if needed and paste the key into the stream key field. Check the service and server/URL as well.
- If you use OBS’s YouTube account connection rather than a manually entered key, check the connected account in Settings > Stream and reconnect if necessary.
- Apply the settings, start the encoder, and wait for the stream preview to appear in YouTube Live Control Room before you start the YouTube broadcast.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover selecting YouTube or entering the stream URL and key: Set up your encoder for live streaming. If startup fails, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also directs creators to copy the key from Live Control Room into the encoder: Fix live stream issues.

Copy the current key or reset it?

Resetting creates a new key; the encoder must use that new value. YouTube says a channel owner or manager can reset a key. Editors and viewers do not have that permission, so ask an authorized owner or manager if you cannot reset it yourself. The reset option and key-management workflow are described in YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
What profile recovery will—and will not—bring back
- Profile: Holds Stream, Video, and Output settings, including stream configuration. A different or imported profile may restore those settings.
- Scene Collection: Holds your scenes separately. Importing an OBS profile does not restore a missing Scene Collection.
- YouTube key: YouTube Studio manages the current key. If the profile is gone, copy the current key there; if you reset it, use the new key.

If OBS still will not connect
- The key is rejected: Check that you copied the whole current key without extra spaces. If you reset it, replace the old OBS value with the newly generated key.
- The wrong profile is active: Open the Profile menu and confirm the profile whose Stream settings you updated is selected.
- OBS is using account connection, not a manual key: Check the connected YouTube account in Settings > Stream; do not assume that pasting a key is the correct fix for this configuration.
- The service or server/URL is incorrect: Confirm YouTube is selected and verify the server/URL in OBS, then try starting the encoder again.
- You cannot reset the key: Ask a channel owner or manager; editor and viewer roles cannot perform the reset.
- The encoder appears to start but YouTube is not ready: Check Live Control Room for the incoming preview and resolve any displayed startup issue before going live.
