First, find out which OBS counter is rising: network dropped frames point to an unstable connection to YouTube or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain; rendering lag or encoding overload point to computer or GPU performance. They require different fixes. Check View → Stats while streaming, then change one thing at a time and test the stream before leaving it unattended.
Identify what OBS is reporting
Open View → Stats in OBS and watch the counters while the issue occurs. Note the message, the time, and whether the stream bitrate changes. OBS distinguishes frames lost on the way to the service from frames OBS cannot render or encode in time.
- Dropped frames (network): frames did not reach YouTube’s ingest server. The connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. This does not, by itself, show that the encoder or computer is at fault. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide explains this symptom.
- Frames missed due to rendering lag or encoding overload: OBS cannot prepare or encode frames quickly enough. Reduce GPU or scene workload rather than changing network settings alone. See OBS’s encoding performance guidance.
- Viewer buffering: this alone does not establish that OBS is dropping network frames. A viewer’s playback path is separate, and the symptom needs its own diagnosis.
For a useful baseline, record the dropped-frame percentage, OBS bitrate, the time the problem starts, relevant OBS log details, and any stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room. A speed test is only a snapshot; it cannot establish that the route to YouTube’s ingest server stays stable over a long run.
Fix network dropped frames in order
1. Lower the OBS video bitrate if the connection lacks headroom
In OBS, open Settings → Output and reduce the video bitrate. Choose a rate your connection can sustain consistently and that fits YouTube’s guidance for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. OBS suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed; that is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee. Leave additional room for upload variation and other devices using the connection. If upload capacity fluctuates, try a lower rate and observe whether the dropped-frame counter stops rising.

There is no single correct bitrate for every 24/7 radio stream: the right choice depends on stable upload capacity and the stream’s output format. YouTube’s figures are recommendations for ingest, not proof your route can sustain them.
2. Check VPNs, security software, and network utilities
Temporarily test with a VPN disabled. Check whether firewall or antivirus software, network-optimization tools, or traffic-prioritization utilities are interfering with OBS. Do not leave security protection disabled as a permanent fix; if it is implicated, restore it and configure an appropriate application exception. Update network drivers from your computer or motherboard manufacturer.

3. Test a wired connection
OBS recommends wired networking when Wi-Fi may be unstable. If practical, connect the streaming computer to the router by Ethernet and compare the Stats window under the same stream settings. A cable may help isolate Wi-Fi trouble, but it cannot fix a problem elsewhere on the route to YouTube. Restart the modem or router if the evidence suggests a local connectivity problem; replace equipment only when diagnosis points to a fault.
4. Check whether the issue is specific to the platform or route
OBS recommends testing another server or service to help isolate a service-specific problem. For YouTube, use an alternate ingest option only if one is available in your current OBS and platform setup; do not assume YouTube uses a Twitch-specific server selector. If local checks do not resolve persistent drops, contact your ISP with the occurrence times, logs, and symptoms. Congestion or routing outside your home may require the ISP’s help.

5. Treat dynamic bitrate as a fallback
OBS has a beta dynamic-bitrate option that can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. It may reduce picture quality and does not fix the underlying network problem, so use it as a fallback rather than a substitute for diagnosis.
Verify YouTube’s encoder settings
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, and AV1, with up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and a maximum interval of four seconds; it recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Check the current encoder instructions and select settings compatible with your chosen codec and output format: YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

For H.264, YouTube’s live encoder guidance accessed in 2026 gives these recommended ingest bitrates:

These are YouTube recommendations, not a requirement to use those rates or a guarantee your internet connection can sustain them. YouTube’s table also gives codec-specific ranges for H.265 and AV1. Balance visual needs against stable upload headroom; a mostly static radio visual may not need a high frame rate.

If OBS reports rendering lag or encoding overload
When the network-drop counter is not the issue and OBS reports missed rendering or encoding frames, reduce the work the computer must do:
- Lower output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is not working, OBS suggests trying 30 fps.
- Simplify complex scenes and remove or reduce demanding filters and browser sources.
- Free GPU capacity by closing or reducing other workloads that compete with OBS.
These changes address performance symptoms; they are not a fix for an unstable connection to YouTube. Confirm the relevant Stats counters improve after each change.
Test before leaving a 24/7 stream unattended
After a change, run the stream with the actual music, visuals, and scene setup. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. Observe the stream long enough to see whether the original symptom returns, and note the settings and times so the next adjustment is based on evidence. No bitrate or OBS setting can be said to guarantee a 24/7 run: the result depends on the computer, ISP, route, and YouTube’s ingest conditions.
