Wowza nDVR and YouTube Live DVR are separate features. Wowza Streaming Engine nDVR records a live source for rewind and playback through Wowza-served HLS or MPEG-DASH; YouTube has its own live DVR controls for viewers on YouTube. Available documentation does not establish that Wowza’s rewind settings control YouTube playback, so configure and test each feature for its own destination.
First identify whether you use Wowza Streaming Engine or Wowza Video: their settings and procedures differ. The exact current Wowza-to-YouTube ingest route is not established by the documentation cited here, so confirm it for your product before setting an endpoint, stream key, encoding profile, or reconnect procedure.
What nDVR can—and cannot—do in a YouTube broadcast
With Wowza Streaming Engine, nDVR records an incoming live stream and provides time-shift playback from Wowza over HLS or MPEG-DASH. It is useful when viewers will watch a Wowza playback output and need to pause, rewind, or resume.
YouTube Live DVR is a separate YouTube feature. When enabled, YouTube viewers can pause, rewind, and continue watching a live stream. If the creator disables YouTube DVR, viewers cannot seek backward during the live broadcast; a recording may still be available after the stream ends. The available Wowza documentation does not say that Wowza nDVR controls are passed through to YouTube, so do not treat the Wowza recording window as the rewind window in YouTube’s player.

Choose the Wowza product before configuring it
| Product | Relevant setting | Playback destination and caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Wowza Streaming Engine | Enable and configure nDVR on a live application; configure its DVR store and playback behavior. | Wowza nDVR playback uses HLS or MPEG-DASH. RTMP and RTSP do not support DVR playback. |
| Wowza Video | Set Playlist Seconds on a Wowza CDN stream target, or use the API property playlistSeconds. |
Player compatibility varies. Wowza’s API guide says nDVR does not work with Wowza Player; test the player you intend to use. |
Do not apply Streaming Engine application settings or DVR playback URLs to Wowza Video. Confirm which product you operate and whether your intended rewind destination is Wowza playback, YouTube, or both before configuring anything.
Configure nDVR in Wowza Streaming Engine
- Confirm the live application and source. Ensure you have a working live application and a source stream that Wowza can receive. The available setup documentation does not establish the exact ingest endpoint or stream-key procedure for sending that source onward to YouTube.
- Enable nDVR. In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, select the live application, open nDVR, enable the feature, then restart the application as directed.
- Choose recording and playback behavior. Set the DVR store directory and recording/playback options. You can make all recorded material available and retain it after the source ends, or use a rolling window that exposes only recent material and purges older content outside the window. Wowza’s setup article states a minimum rolling-window duration of 60 seconds.
- Set playback access and application behavior. Configure whether playback URLs require a DVR query parameter and whether the application supports live and DVR streaming. Follow the settings for your application rather than assuming every playback URL uses the same format.
- Save and restart, then test. Save the configuration and restart to apply it. Publish a live source to the Wowza application, verify ordinary live playback first, then test recording and DVR playback with HLS or MPEG-DASH. Include the DVR query parameter when your configuration requires it.
Wowza also documents an XML configuration route: it requires the DVR recorder and store settings, the DVR streaming packetizer, and packetizers for the output protocols. Use the product documentation matching your installed version when editing XML; do not copy settings between products.

Configure Wowza Video’s rewind window
For Wowza Video, the relevant setting is Playlist Seconds on a Wowza CDN stream target—not Streaming Engine’s application-level DVR configuration. Wowza documentation accessed in 2026 gives a supported range of 6 to 28,800 seconds (8 hours) and states a default of 100 seconds. The Video REST API exposes the corresponding playlistSeconds property.
Set the rewind depth appropriate to your use, then test the intended player before a scheduled broadcast. Player support varies, and Wowza states that nDVR does not work with Wowza Player. This setting describes Wowza Video playback; it does not establish that the same rewind period will appear in YouTube.

Check compatibility and plan for continuous operation
- Audio and video synchronization: Wowza says incoming audio and video must be aligned for nDVR; short keyframe intervals and aligned tracks work best.
- Codecs: The quick-start lists H.264 video, AAC audio, and MP3 audio among supported stream types/codecs. Unsupported source codecs can prevent recording. Transcoding may offer a path where supported for ingest, but verify the actual input and deployment.
- MPEG-DASH version requirement: Wowza’s documentation identifies Streaming Engine 4.7.6 or later for MPEG-DASH nDVR. Confirm your installed version against current documentation.
- License: Wowza licensing documentation says perpetual and subscription licenses enable integrated nDVR. Licenses purchased before 2015 may require contacting Wowza; confirm licensing for your installation.
- Disconnects and recording: Wowza warns that nDVR recording may be interrupted when the live source disconnects. Its documentation describes a default stream timeout of five minutes to accommodate encoder disconnects and restarts. Test the reconnect behavior for your source rather than assuming a recording will remain continuous through a failure.
- Storage and retention: Decide how much material to retain, where the DVR store resides, and how you will monitor available capacity. The cited documentation does not provide a capacity formula, so size and test storage against your actual bitrate, retention, and operating conditions.
- YouTube settings and ingest: Separately confirm that YouTube Live DVR is enabled if YouTube viewers should be able to seek backward. Verify the current YouTube ingest procedure and stream settings for your Wowza route; endpoint, stream-key workflow, encoding profile, and reconnect guidance are not established here.
Wowza Video’s API description refers to a “24×7 channel” as unlimited stream time for one channel. That description alone does not establish YouTube ingest constraints or guarantee uninterrupted delivery to YouTube. Treat continuity as something to validate across the source, Wowza product, destination, storage, and recovery setup.
Troubleshoot common nDVR problems
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Live playback works, but rewind does not. | The playback request may not use a DVR-capable protocol, or the required DVR query parameter may be missing. | Test HLS or MPEG-DASH output and check the application’s DVR URL setting. RTMP and RTSP are not DVR playback protocols in the Streaming Engine setup guide. |
| The recording is absent or stops unexpectedly. | The source may have disconnected, or its codec or audio/video alignment may be incompatible. | Check the source connection and stream logs, validate supported codecs and synchronized tracks, then test recording again with a known-compatible input. |
| Old material is no longer seekable. | A rolling-window configuration purges content outside its selected duration. | Review the configured window and retention choice. Streaming Engine’s documented minimum window is 60 seconds. |
| Wowza playback rewinds, but YouTube does not. | The two destinations use separate DVR features. | Check YouTube’s own live DVR setting and test in YouTube’s player; do not expect Wowza nDVR controls to transfer to it. |
| Wowza Video rewind fails in the intended player. | Player support may differ; Wowza says nDVR does not work with Wowza Player. | Test a supported player for your deployment and consult the current Wowza Video API guidance. |
| A restart or reconnect interrupts the recording. | Source disconnect handling and the configured timeout affect recording behavior. | Test encoder reconnects, retention, and monitoring under realistic conditions. The documented default timeout is five minutes, not a guarantee of seamless recovery. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a separate option from configuring Wowza nDVR: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home; the uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It does not stream from a camera.
