Disk I/O

YouTube 24/7 Stream Freezes on a Low-Cost VPS in Mumbai? Check Disk I/O Wait

Use timestamped iostat and vmstat samples during a freeze to test the disk hypothesis, then compare device metrics with encoder speed, upload capacity and YouTube stream health.

A disk bottleneck is one possible reason a YouTube 24/7 stream freezes on a VPS, but the title alone cannot establish that it is the cause. Capture repeated Linux metrics during a freeze, then line them up with encoder logs and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Treat %iowait as a clue—not a verdict.

How to check disk I/O wait during a freeze

Use interval samples while the problem is happening. A cumulative value since boot can conceal a short incident, and a single high reading cannot show whether disk activity coincided with the freeze.

  1. Start repeated per-device samples: if sysstat is installed, run iostat -xz 2. It reports CPU and extended device statistics every two seconds. Stop it after capturing the incident. Confirm that your installed iostat version supports these flags.
  2. Capture a second system-wide view: in another terminal, run vmstat 2. It reports processes, memory and paging, block I/O, CPU activity and other fields, including blocked processes (b), CPU I/O wait (wa) and hypervisor steal time (st).
  3. Mark the incident: record the freeze’s start and end times, the device names shown by iostat, and any encoder log timestamps. Match the relevant metric rows to the freeze, rather than relying on readings from before or after it.
  4. Set aside boot-history rows: iostat and vmstat may show a first report that summarizes activity since boot. For incident diagnosis, compare subsequent interval reports and their timestamps.

Run these commands with appropriate access for your distribution. They observe system activity; they do not identify which process caused it. If the stream reads its media from local storage, inspect the device serving those files. Also consider devices holding logs, temporary files or other inputs used by the encoder.

How to interpret the metrics

Look for several signals rising together during the freeze and compare them with normal intervals. No single field proves that storage caused the interruption.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Metric What it tells you How to use it
%iowait / wa iostat defines %iowait as the percentage of time CPUs were idle while the system had an outstanding disk I/O request. vmstat wa is CPU time waiting for I/O. Use as context alongside device-level and process evidence. It is not a direct measurement of how long the stream process waited. The kernel manual cautions that iowait is not reliable for that interpretation.
await Average request time in milliseconds, including both queue time and device service time. Compare by device and interval. A rise that coincides with a freeze is a clue, not proof of causation.
aqu-sz Average queue length for requests issued to a device. Check whether the queue grows during the incident and whether it does so on a device relevant to the stream.
%util Time during which I/O requests were issued to the device. Near 100% can indicate saturation for devices that serve requests serially. On parallel devices, including modern SSDs, it does not by itself show the performance limit.
vmstat b Number of processes blocked waiting for I/O to complete. Check whether blocked processes rise during the freeze; this is a system-wide measure, so correlate it with the stream process and encoder logs.
vmstat st Time stolen by the hypervisor from the virtual machine. A rise can point to CPU scheduling pressure as another possible VPS contributor. It does not establish that steal time is present on this host.

The iostat manual defines iowait as CPU idle time with an outstanding disk request, but the kernel’s proc_stat(5) documentation warns: “This value is not reliable, for the following reasons:”. It explains that a CPU does not wait for I/O to complete and that another task may be scheduled. In practice, high iowait alone does not tell you that the stream process was blocked on disk.

Rule out encoding, network and YouTube ingestion problems

Storage is only one hypothesis. A VPS can show normal disk activity while the encoder falls behind, its upload path cannot sustain the configured bitrate, or YouTube reports a problem receiving the stream. Compare evidence from the same incident window.

Check encoder progress

Review FFmpeg progress output or the telemetry from your encoder and compare encoding speed with real time. Google’s guidance for live VP9 encoding says that below 1x real-time speed, encoding may not keep up with the input, leading to buffering and transmission breaks. That guidance is specific to VP9 live encoding; it is not a benchmark for this VPS or a universal threshold for every codec.

Check YouTube stream health and the upload path

In YouTube Live Control Room, inspect the stream-health indicators and encoder settings around the freeze. YouTube advises choosing a quality that the upload connection can reliably sustain, testing before going live, and monitoring stream health. Its live encoder settings and bitrates guidance recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds.

The same YouTube guidance lists recommended bitrates by resolution, frame rate and codec. For H.264, its examples include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are platform recommendations, not evidence that a particular VPS or route to YouTube can sustain that upload rate. Check the relevant recommendation for your codec and settings, then confirm the actual upload path is stable at the chosen bitrate.

Verify RTMPS configuration if you use it

If the encoder sends RTMPS, confirm the full server URL, endpoint and application name, along with port 443. A wrong endpoint or incomplete URL can prevent reliable ingestion independently of disk performance. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

Use the evidence to narrow down the cause

  1. Disk evidence aligns with the freeze: if relevant devices show rising await or queue length at the same time, and system-wide blocked processes also increase, storage contention becomes more plausible. Check whether the encoder is reading media from that device and whether other workloads are active. These correlations still do not prove a specific host-side cause.
  2. Encoding speed falls behind while disk metrics stay ordinary: investigate encoder load, configuration and CPU availability. On a VPS, note st as a possible indicator of hypervisor scheduling pressure.
  3. Disk and encoder evidence look normal, but YouTube reports a stream-health or ingest problem: check the bitrate against the upload connection, the encoder’s CBR and keyframe settings, and—if applicable—the RTMPS endpoint and port.
  4. Local evidence does not explain it: preserve timestamped command output and encoder logs, then ask the VPS provider to investigate host-side storage contention or throttling. Share the affected device, time window and observed metrics. This is an escalation path, not evidence that a particular provider or Mumbai location is responsible.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the underlying issue is the VPS, these checks help identify it; they do not repair that server. For a separate way to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video or playlist from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. No computer or home connection has to stay on. It plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
