You can build a 24/7 YouTube study stream from Google Drive, but Drive is the file source—not a YouTube encoder or an automatic live playlist. The reliable setup is to make authorized videos available to a playlist or automation layer, encode that continuous feed, and send it to YouTube Live with a stream key. Then monitor the encoder and plan for interruptions and YouTube’s stream lifecycle.
How the system fits together
A continuous stream needs four pieces: an eligible YouTube channel, readable video files, a playlist or automation process, and an encoder that sends the feed to YouTube. Google Drive can store and supply files, but YouTube’s documented encoder workflow does not turn a Drive folder into a live playlist automatically.
- YouTube channel: verified and eligible for livestreaming.
- Drive access: permission to read and download each video.
- Playlist layer: selects and sequences files in a way the encoder can play.
- Encoder: sends the video and audio to YouTube’s ingestion server.
The exact playlist software and restart method depend on your operating system, hosting device, and reliability needs. YouTube documents the encoder connection and settings, but not a universal Drive-folder-to-live-stream setup.
1. Prepare YouTube Live
- Check eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have livestreaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time livestream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before you plan to broadcast. See YouTube’s livestreaming tips.
- Create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio. Retrieve the server URL and stream key for the encoder. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it or put it in a publicly accessible file.
- Set up the encoder in advance. Start it before the intended broadcast, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, and check the stream health before going live. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring throughout the broadcast in its live-streaming guidance.
2. Make Drive videos available to the playlist
Choose a retrieval method
For many setups, the simplest arrangement is to download permitted videos to storage the playlist software can read, then have that software play the local files in the desired order. A Drive desktop sync can also make selected files available locally; check how the chosen sync arrangement behaves when files change or access is revoked.

For a custom integration, Google Drive’s API supports downloading binary files with files.get and alt=media. The authenticated account needs content-read access and the file must allow downloading. Check the file’s capabilities.canDownload value before retrieval; a metadata-only OAuth scope cannot download the media. Plan for unattended access
An automated process needs an authorized arrangement that remains valid while it runs. If permission is revoked, credentials expire, or a file is removed, the playlist may no longer have its source media. Build in a way to detect missing files and recover or alert rather than assuming Drive access will remain unchanged indefinitely.

If your chosen playlist or encoder advertises a Drive connector, verify its supported file formats, permissions, unattended authorization, and behavior when folder contents change. Do not assume a connector exists or works continuously without checking the specific software and version.
3. Build and encode the looping feed
- Choose the media. Select videos that you are authorized to broadcast publicly, including their music, images, and other included material. Private access to a file in Drive does not grant public rebroadcast rights. A public stream can also reveal material that was private in Drive.
- Make a playlist. Use a playlist layer that can sequence the available files and loop them or schedule them as needed. Check how it handles a corrupt, missing, or newly added file, and whether it resumes after a restart.
- Configure an encoder. The encoder takes the playlist feed and sends it to YouTube. Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the encoder’s YouTube Live settings. YouTube describes the encoder as software or hardware that sends the media feed to its ingestion service; see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Preview, test, then go live. Start the encoder, confirm that YouTube receives a preview, check video and audio, and begin the broadcast from Live Control Room. Test the full playlist and loop behavior before relying on it unattended.
A low-motion study loop may be simpler to manage than a complex sequence of scenes, but the stream should not imply that a live event is happening if it is prerecorded content. Keep titles and descriptions accurate.

4. Select YouTube encoder settings
Use YouTube’s encoder settings guide for the current supported options and values. It recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the feed in transit. The guide supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and up to 60 fps. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds.

These are YouTube-published encoder-ingestion recommendations, not guaranteed viewer playback bitrates; YouTube transcodes streams for viewers. Choose a resolution and bitrate your upload connection can sustain, and test with the actual video and audio. YouTube advises speed-testing upload capacity and testing before going live.

5. Keep the stream running and handle archives
A 24/7 result depends on more than the encoder setting: the files must remain readable, the playlist process and encoder must stay alive, and the network and power must be adequate. YouTube’s Live Streaming API explains the distinction between a broadcast and the stream feed sent into it, including a continuous-broadcast scenario, but that is not a promise of interruption-free operation. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a genuinely continuous channel, plan how you will handle the broadcast lifecycle and recordings rather than assuming one archive will capture an indefinite run. The cited guidance does not establish that a single broadcast can remain live forever or prescribe a universal restart recipe.

- Keep a local cache or other dependable copy of the playlist files.
- Monitor encoder status, YouTube stream health, and network connectivity.
- Decide how the playlist and encoder should recover after a crash or restart; validate watchdog or failover behavior in the specific software you choose.
- Plan how you will create, end, restart, and archive broadcasts, including how viewers will find the next stream if a broadcast ends.
- Test the complete unattended path—including source-file access, looping, recovery, and YouTube preview—before relying on it.
