Treat those as separate steps: launch the app, restore the show, take the playlist live and start its playback, then start the YouTube event. The exact automation available depends on your Wirecast version and event settings, so test the whole chain before relying on it unattended.
Know what “launch a playlist” needs to do
A Wirecast playlist is a shot in the production, not a single Windows startup action. There are four separate outcomes to set up:
- Windows sign-in: Wirecast opens when the Windows account signs in.
- Restore the production: Wirecast opens the saved show that contains the playlist.
- Start the playlist: The playlist shot is taken live and its media begins playing.
- Start YouTube Live: The broadcast connects to and starts the intended YouTube event.
Automating the first two does not prove the last two will happen. Decide whether you need Wirecast merely ready for you, or a broadcast that starts without anyone present; the latter requires testing each stage.
Prepare the Wirecast show and playlist
Save a show that is ready to restore
Open the Wirecast production you want to use and save it with the playlist shot and intended YouTube destination configured. Make sure the media files used by the playlist remain available to the computer. Then confirm that the saved show is the one you want Wirecast to reopen.

A legacy Wirecast for YouTube guide from December 2012 lists a preference called “Open last document on startup.” That is a useful clue, not confirmation of the current preference name or behavior. In your installed release, look in Wirecast Preferences for an option with equivalent wording, enable it if available, and verify which saved document it restores. Understand how the playlist becomes live
The Wirecast 7 Windows guide describes playlist playback as a shot workflow: select the playlist shot into Preview, then click Go to take it live. Wirecast 16’s Windows User Guide documents media commands such as “Start Playing All Movies” and “Shuffle Playlist,” and describes AutoLive as placing a clicked shot in the Live Broadcast Area. These controls do not establish that playback starts automatically when Windows launches Wirecast. Confirm the behavior in your own release and show. Set Wirecast to open after Windows sign-in
Windows startup automation normally runs after a user signs in; it does not necessarily launch an interactive desktop app at the power-on screen. Use the Windows startup mechanism appropriate to your edition and account, and point it to the installed Wirecast application. Exact Windows clicks and available choices can vary, so consult current Windows guidance for Startup apps or Task Scheduler rather than relying on a path or command that may not match your installation.
- Confirm Wirecast opens normally and can access the saved show and its media.
- Configure the signed-in Windows account to launch Wirecast when that account signs in.
- Restart or sign out and back in, then verify that Wirecast opens. Check whether it restores the intended show; if not, open the show manually and revisit the Wirecast startup preference.
If the computer is shared, consider which account signs in and whether the show should be visible to that user. Do not assume the app will start before sign-in or run correctly while the computer is asleep.

Configure playlist playback and YouTube start separately
Playlist shot and playback
Once the show is open, verify whether the playlist shot is selected and live, and whether its media is actually playing. The documented Wirecast 7 workflow is Preview, then Go. Wirecast 16 documents manual playback commands, but the cited guides do not establish a universal setting that automatically takes a playlist live and starts it whenever the application opens. If your release offers automation for these actions, configure it in that release and test it; otherwise plan for a person to perform the missing action.
YouTube event and broadcast
Starting media inside Wirecast is not the same as starting the YouTube broadcast. Check the YouTube destination and the settings for the specific event you intend to use. Telestream’s version history records a fix in Wirecast 16.5.1 for an issue where a stream would not automatically start a YouTube event when “Automatically Go Live” was checked. That history demonstrates that version and event configuration matter; it does not guarantee that automatic start will work in every current setup. Before leaving the setup unattended, test with the actual scheduled event or an appropriate private test event. Confirm that the right show opens, the intended playlist is live and playing, and YouTube reports the broadcast as live. A setting that appears enabled is not a substitute for checking the complete result.
Test the full startup chain
- Save the show after confirming the playlist and destination.
- Sign out of Windows or restart the computer, then sign in to the account configured to launch Wirecast.
- Check that Wirecast opens and restores the intended show.
- Check the playlist shot’s live state and verify that media playback advances.
- Check the YouTube event itself to confirm the broadcast has started and is showing the intended content.
- Record which steps still require a person. Do not treat a successful app launch as proof of unattended streaming.
Troubleshoot common failures
- Wirecast does not open: Confirm the Windows startup configuration applies to the account signing in and points to the installed app. Test opening Wirecast manually first.
- Wirecast opens the wrong show, or no show: Open the intended production, save it, and check whether your installed version has a preference equivalent to the legacy “Open last document on startup” setting.
- The show opens but the playlist is not live: Select the playlist shot into Preview and use Go as described in the Wirecast 7 guide, or use the workflow documented for your release.
- The playlist is live but does not advance: Check whether playback was started and whether the playlist’s media is available. The presence of a “Start Playing All Movies” control does not show that it runs at startup.
- Wirecast is sending, but YouTube is not live: Verify the selected YouTube event, its current settings, and the Wirecast version. Test “Automatically Go Live” with that event rather than assuming it works based on the checkbox alone.
- It works only when someone is present: Identify which stage depends on manual action. The cited documentation does not establish a reliable, universal end-to-end unattended startup sequence.
Check your Wirecast version and Windows compatibility
Telestream’s support page lists Windows 10 version 1809 or higher as the Wirecast Windows baseline and lists releases through 16.5.4.
