YouTube Live Bitrate for 720p at 30fps on 4G in India

For YouTube Live at 720p30, use YouTube’s codec-specific bitrate guidance as a starting point, then test upload at your actual 4G streaming location.

For a 720p, 30fps YouTube Live stream, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps with H.264 (minimum 3 Mbps) or 6 Mbps with AV1 or H.265/HEVC (minimum 2 Mbps). Those are encoder video-bitrate settings, not a promise that any 4G connection in India can sustain them. Measure upload capacity where and when you will stream, then choose a bitrate your connection can maintain reliably.

Which bitrate should you choose?

Choose the codec first, then use YouTube’s corresponding live-encoder figures. The current YouTube Help guidance, accessed in 2026, lists these values for 720p at 30fps:

Codec Minimum video bitrate Recommended video bitrate
H.264 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 2 Mbps 6 Mbps

These are video bitrate figures for live encoder input, not total connection speed and not a guaranteed minimum for a stable broadcast. If your encoder uses H.264, treat 8 Mbps as the reference only when your measured upload can sustain it. A lower rate within YouTube’s published range may be a better practical choice on a variable mobile uplink; the published minimum itself does not guarantee stability. YouTube does not specify a particular 4G headroom percentage or an India-specific bitrate.

See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the codec-specific figures and other ingestion settings.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Why “4G in India” is not enough to determine bitrate

“4G” describes a network technology, not the upload capacity available to your encoder at a particular place and moment. Coverage, congestion, device and local conditions can all affect the result. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish a single upload speed for Indian 4G users, so a countrywide figure would not tell you what bitrate your connection can actually hold.

Measure upload, not just download. YouTube notes that inbound bandwidth is often greater than outbound, and other people or devices sharing the network can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream. A strong download result alone is not evidence that your upstream is sufficient. See YouTube’s live filming tips.

Test the connection before the broadcast

  1. Test upload at the streaming location. Use a speed test near the place you plan to broadcast, at a time representative of the live event. YouTube specifically advises creators to test upload bitrate.
  2. Check the result against the chosen codec’s rate. For example, an H.264 stream set to 8 Mbps needs an uplink that can sustain that video rate as well as the stream’s other traffic. If upload varies or comes close to the target, reduce the encoder bitrate and test again rather than assuming the nominal 4G connection will hold.
  3. Run a representative test stream. Include audio and the kind of movement you expect in the real broadcast. Motion and audio activity should resemble the event, not just a static test screen.
  4. Watch YouTube stream health while live. Check the live control room’s stream-health messages during the test and broadcast. If the stream reports problems, reduce the encoder’s video bitrate or improve the connection, then test again.
  5. Limit competing network use. Pause downloads and other heavy use on the same connection where possible. Shared bandwidth can leave less upload capacity for the encoder.

Encoder settings that matter

  • Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS; it recommends RTMPS for secure delivery.
  • Rate control: Use CBR (constant bitrate), as specified in YouTube’s live encoder guidance.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval and do not exceed four seconds.
  • Audio: YouTube lists 128 Kbps stereo audio.
  • Resolution and frame rate: Set the encoder to 720p and 30fps if that is the stream format you intend to send. Keep the video bitrate matched to the selected codec and the upload capacity you have tested.

The settings above are YouTube’s published live-encoder guidance; exact control names vary by encoder software or device.

Do not use the prerecorded-upload bitrate for a live stream

YouTube’s recommended encoding settings for prerecorded SDR uploads list 5 Mbps for 720p at standard frame rates. That figure applies to uploading a video file, not to live encoder input. For a 720p30 broadcast, use the live table’s codec-specific recommendations instead. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

If a phone hotspot is unstable

A separate 4G LTE hotspot or portable router is one possible way to connect an encoder, but it does not guarantee upload throughput or fix poor coverage. Check that the device works with your local carrier and test its upload performance at the actual streaming location before relying on it.
