Use a systemd service to start FFmpeg at boot and restart it after qualifying failures. Then verify that YouTube is receiving advancing video: a running FFmpeg process alone does not prove the public stream is healthy. This approach works on a Linux VPS with systemd, including an Indian VPS; paths, users, installed FFmpeg options, and YouTube ingest settings must match your server and account.
What boot automation does—and does not do
Two separate settings are involved. Enabling a systemd unit configures it to start through the machine’s boot target; its Restart= policy controls whether systemd starts the process again after it exits or times out. Neither setting detects every case where FFmpeg remains alive but the stream has stopped advancing at YouTube.
For a playlist stream, use the layers together: loop the media inputs, enable the service at boot, configure an appropriate restart policy, consider FFmpeg’s output-recovery options, and check actual stream progress. Restarting FFmpeg restores encoder output; it does not necessarily create, start, schedule, or end a YouTube broadcast.
Prepare the VPS and playlist
Use stable paths and a service account
Store the playlist files and media in stable locations that the service user can read. A dedicated, non-root service user is preferable. Make sure it has permission to read every media file and playlist and to access any files used by the FFmpeg command. Example account names and paths from other installations are not universal; substitute the paths and user you actually configure.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Loop each input deliberately
A practical pattern for a repeating playlist is to use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer with a file list for video and, if needed, another for audio, and loop each input indefinitely. Confirm that each list uses valid paths and that the files are in the expected order. Test the command interactively as the service user before putting it into a unit; this helps distinguish media or permission problems from systemd problems.
Get and protect the YouTube stream credentials
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and obtain the current stream URL and stream key for the intended broadcast or stream setup. YouTube’s setup guidance is available in its live encoder setup instructions.
- Configure FFmpeg with the URL and protocol supported by the selected YouTube ingest setup. YouTube documents RTMPS ingest and HLS ingest; do not assume an RTMP example, URL, key, and protocol can be interchanged. Check the current Live Control Room settings and the requirements for your encoder.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Restrict access to wherever you store it, avoid committing it to a public repository, and take care not to expose it in public logs. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube before using the stream again.
Create a systemd unit for FFmpeg
Run FFmpeg in the foreground under systemd, rather than backgrounding it from a shell script. The following is a unit-file shape, not a drop-in command: replace the example user, paths, and command with your tested setup, and store credentials using an appropriately protected method.

ExecStartmust point to the installed FFmpeg executable and use arguments valid for the installed version. Replace the bracketed text; it is explanatory, not valid FFmpeg syntax.Restart=on-failureis one reasonable policy for a long-running process that should recover after errors. Choose a policy that matches the intended behavior; review systemd’s restart rules for the machine’s version.RestartSec=10adds a delay before restart. Tune it to the service rather than allowing repeated rapid failures. Check systemd start-rate limits if the process repeatedly fails, so the unit does not enter a rate-limited state.Wants=andAfter=express ordering around network-online.target, but do not guarantee that YouTube is reachable or that the stream is healthy.WantedBy=multi-user.targetis a common boot relationship for a server service. Confirm that it suits the VPS’s boot target.
Load, enable, and start the service
- Save the unit under
/etc/systemd/system/with a descriptive name, such asyoutube-playlist.service. - Reload systemd after creating or changing the unit:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable it for boot and start it now:
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-playlist.service. Enabling configures activation;--nowalso starts the service immediately. You can instead enable and start it separately. - Check the service with
systemctl status youtube-playlist.serviceand inspect recent output withjournalctl -u youtube-playlist.service. Resolve missing-file, permission, invalid-option, or authentication errors before relying on reboot recovery.
Combine FFmpeg recovery with systemd
| Recovery layer | What it helps with | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg network-output recovery | Options such as attempt_recovery and recovery-wait settings can retry some output failures while FFmpeg remains running. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation. |
It does not configure boot startup or guarantee that YouTube displays advancing video. |
| systemd boot enablement and restart policy | Boot enablement starts the unit through its configured target; Restart= can restart the service after qualifying process exits or timeouts. See the systemd service documentation and unit documentation. |
It does not detect every silent failure in the remote stream. |
These mechanisms solve different problems and can be used together. Validate FFmpeg recovery options against the FFmpeg version installed on the VPS; option availability and behavior should not be assumed from an example written for another version.
Test reboot recovery and monitor the broadcast
- First confirm the unit starts manually and that the journal shows FFmpeg running without immediate errors.
- Schedule a maintenance window, reboot the VPS, and check that the unit starts after boot with
systemctl status youtube-playlist.serviceandjournalctl -u youtube-playlist.service. - Separately check YouTube Live Control Room for incoming media and confirm the public stream advances. A healthy process status or increasing local counters is not by itself proof of working playback.
- Add a watchdog or external check that detects stalled media progress. One implementation report describes checking a frame counter and using a scheduled preventive restart, but those are particular tactics—not a universal fix. In that report, the local indicators continued advancing during a YouTube-side freeze; its proposed cause is a working theory, not a proven general explanation.
YouTube treats live streams and broadcasts as distinct API resources: a liveStream carries ingest information, while a liveBroadcast represents the broadcast. See the YouTube Live Streaming API documentation. If your workflow requires creating, scheduling, starting, or ending a broadcast, handle that lifecycle separately; restarting FFmpeg only restarts media output.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The service does not start after reboot: confirm the unit is enabled, its
[Install]relationship matches the boot target, and systemd was reloaded after edits. Check the unit status and journal for parse errors or failed dependencies. - FFmpeg starts and exits repeatedly: inspect the journal for invalid options, inaccessible files, malformed playlist entries, or output errors. Test the command as the configured service user, then review
RestartSecand systemd start-rate limits. - FFmpeg runs, but YouTube shows no incoming stream: verify the current stream URL, key, and ingest protocol in Live Control Room. Check that the credential has not changed or been exposed and that FFmpeg’s configured output matches YouTube’s current setup.
- YouTube appears to receive a stream, but playback freezes: do not treat process uptime as proof of progress. Check media-progress indicators and YouTube-side ingest/playback status; a watchdog can alert or take action when progress stalls.
- The stream recovers but the broadcast does not behave as expected: determine whether the workflow requires a separate YouTube broadcast action. Encoder output recovery and broadcast lifecycle management are different tasks.
- The unit works interactively but fails under systemd: check the service user, working directory, absolute paths, file permissions, and how credentials are supplied. A shell environment available in an interactive session may not be available to the unit.
