The VPS keeps the encoder running without a home computer, but it cannot guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube connection, eligibility for monetization, or an archived replay. This guide covers the setup, stream settings, rights and policy checks, recovery, and the practical limits of a 24/7 broadcast.
Check YouTube Live eligibility and prepare your source
Before configuring the server, confirm that the channel can stream. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube supports streaming through an encoder; start in the current Live Control Room setup flow and follow its prompts for the stream. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder.
Prepare a video and fan-noise audio recording that you own or have permission to use worldwide. The picture can be a still or a moving visual, but a continuous fan-noise broadcast is still subject to YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules. Keep the original media files on the VPS or otherwise ensure the encoder can access them for the full run.
Choose an encoder that suits a VPS
The practical choice is between a visual desktop workflow and a headless command-line workflow. OBS can suit someone who wants to arrange scenes and sources through a graphical interface. FFmpeg is a natural fit for looping files on a VPS without a desktop. YouTube’s encoder documentation applies generally; a community example describes looping local audio and video with FFmpeg on Ubuntu and using systemd to restart the process. That is an implementation pattern, not a YouTube endorsement or a reliability guarantee. Community FFmpeg and systemd example.

No VPS provider, plan, minimum CPU allocation, or bandwidth threshold is established here. Choose a host and profile by testing whether the server can encode the selected resolution and sustain the upload, with headroom, for representative content.
Set up the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room
- Verify the channel and open Live Control Room. Use YouTube’s current encoder setup flow to create or select the live stream and obtain its stream key. The required verification and 90-day restriction check are described in YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: do not put it in public scripts, repositories or logs. If you expose it, replace or reset it through YouTube’s stream settings before continuing.
- Configure the encoder. Use a profile the VPS can encode and its network can carry consistently. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), AAC or MP3 audio, and RTMPS, which encrypts the connection to YouTube. Confirm the current settings and any input requirements against YouTube’s live encoder settings.
- Start with a representative test. Test the real audio, visuals and encoding profile, then check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and messages. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream for viewers, so the quality you send is not the only playback format viewers may receive.
- Run the encoder unattended only after the test works. For FFmpeg, the community Ubuntu example uses systemd as a process supervisor. Adapt such a setup to your own files and server rather than assuming its configuration fits your environment. Confirm the encoder starts after a reboot and inspect what happens after an intentional stop or failure.
Plan recovery: a running process is not a guaranteed live stream
A supervisor such as systemd can restart an encoder process after a crash or reboot, but that alone does not detect every stalled feed or ensure YouTube accepts a reconnection. Failures can come from the VPS host, its network, the encoder process or YouTube ingest. Check logs and YouTube stream-health messages, and establish a way to notice an interruption rather than assuming that a process shown as active is delivering a healthy broadcast.

- Test the actual profile for sustained operation rather than relying on a short startup check.
- Check that the media files remain available to the process and that the audio and video continue as expected.
- Confirm that a restart recovers the encoder and that the new connection reaches YouTube; a local process restart is not proof of successful ingest.
- Do not treat a VPS or supervisor as an uptime guarantee. The available implementation example does not establish a guaranteed VPS specification or service uptime.
Rights, copyright scans and monetization
Use fan-noise audio and visuals for which you have the necessary worldwide exploitation rights. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility for rights clearance on the content provider. YouTube Terms of Service.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A detected match may replace the picture with a placeholder, interrupt the stream or terminate it. Even licensed material may require the rights owner to allowlist your channel in Content ID; having a licence does not necessarily prevent an automated interruption if that step has not been completed. Monetization is a separate decision from whether the encoder can technically send a loop. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams and expect content to be original and authentic. Repetitive, mass-produced, generic or reused material may not qualify. One long fan-noise loop may therefore carry monetization-policy risk; adding superficial variations does not establish originality or eligibility. Do not present a 24/7 loop as assured income. For context only, YouTube reported that, across 207 countries in January 2024, channels that enabled automatic live mid-rolls had an average in-stream ad revenue per hour over 20% higher than channels that did not. This is a platform-reported comparison, not a forecast for an individual channel, and it does not establish that repetitive ASMR content will pass monetization review. Decide how to handle the replay
A continuous 24/7 stream runs beyond YouTube’s reliable automatic-archive window. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If retaining a replay matters, make an independent recording and consider shorter broadcast sessions, accounting for the work of restarting and the effect on viewers.
