How to Schedule Radio Jingles in a Continuous YouTube Livestream

Schedule the YouTube event in Studio, then use OBS Media Source to repeat one jingle or VLC Video to loop a playlist. Exact interval-based cues require a separate automation method.

You can schedule a YouTube livestream to start at a future time, then use OBS to repeat one jingle or cycle through a playlist. Those are separate jobs: YouTube Studio schedules the event; OBS plays the audio. OBS’s documented loop controls repeat a file or playlist, but they do not establish how to insert jingles at exact intervals over a separate, continuous music bed.

What “schedule jingles” can mean

There are two different kinds of scheduling:

  • Schedule the livestream event: Set up an upcoming YouTube event so viewers can find it and opt into reminders. The encoder still needs to connect and begin sending the stream when it is time.
  • Schedule individual jingles during a broadcast: Insert a jingle at a particular time or interval, perhaps every 15 minutes over continuous music. The OBS loop settings described below repeat media; they do not document timed insertion over another audio source.

This guide covers scheduling the YouTube event and setting up repeat playback in OBS. If you need exact timed cues over a separate music bed, use a separately verified cue-scheduling or automation method rather than treating a loop setting as a scheduler.

Schedule the YouTube event and connect OBS

  1. Schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Go live, select Manage, then choose Schedule stream. Create a new event or reuse settings. Scheduling makes the upcoming event visible to viewers and allows them to opt into reminders. Follow YouTube’s encoder livestream setup instructions for the current Live Control Room flow.
  2. Copy the event’s stream URL and key. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into the corresponding stream settings in OBS. The URL identifies the destination; the key authorizes the encoder connection. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private. If it is compromised, YouTube documents resetting it in Live Control Room in its live stream settings guidance.
  3. Configure the audio source. Add a Media Source or VLC Video source as described below, then check the audio in OBS before connecting.
  4. Connect and preview. Start streaming from OBS. In Live Control Room, wait for YouTube’s incoming preview and check that the expected audio is present before selecting Go live. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video similar to the actual broadcast and monitoring stream health and audio/video quality; see its livestreaming tips.

Choose an OBS playback method

Need OBS source and setting What it does Trade-off
Repeat one jingle Media Source; enable Loop Plays the selected file again when playback completes. Repeats that file; it does not schedule cues or mix the jingle over a separate bed.
Repeat several jingles in order VLC Video; add files to a playlist and enable Loop Playlist Plays the listed media and restarts the source after it runs out of files. Requires VLC to be installed. Leave shuffle disabled for a fixed sequence.
Insert jingles at exact intervals over continuous audio Not established by the loop controls above A separate cue scheduler or verified automation workflow is needed. Do not assume that looping one source will trigger timed playback over another.

Repeat a single jingle with Media Source

  1. In the OBS scene used for the broadcast, add a Media Source.
  2. Select the local audio file. OBS documents support for audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV.
  3. Enable Loop if you want the same file to replay after it finishes. OBS’s Media Sources page labels this setting as specifying whether the file plays again once playback has completed.
  4. Listen to the source in OBS and confirm that its level and start point are suitable before the broadcast.

Cycle through a playlist with VLC Video

  1. Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS’s VLC Video source depends on it.
  2. Add a VLC Video source to the broadcast scene and add the audio or video files to its playlist.
  3. Enable Loop Playlist to restart the source after it reaches the end of the media list.
  4. Keep shuffle disabled if jingles must play in a fixed order. Check the source’s visibility behavior if it is used across scene changes; OBS documents visibility options that affect whether playback continues when a source is hidden.
  5. Play through the sequence in a test to check file order, transitions, levels, and whether playback behaves as intended when changing scenes.

OBS documents these controls in its Media Sources guide, dated January 11, 2022. Its documented loop settings cover repetition, not exact clock-time cues.

Test before the scheduled broadcast

  • Use a test stream or otherwise test in advance with audio and video similar to the intended broadcast.
  • Confirm OBS is sending the correct scene and that YouTube’s Live Control Room preview receives the jingle audio.
  • Check that a single file repeats, or that the VLC playlist reaches its end and restarts as expected.
  • Monitor stream health and audio/video quality while live, as YouTube recommends. A successful preview is a useful check, not a guarantee against later interruptions.
  • If changing scenes, verify that the source’s visibility settings do not pause or restart playback in a way that disrupts the intended sequence.

Copyright and continuity considerations

A locally stored jingle is not automatically cleared for livestream use, and calling audio “royalty-free” does not by itself establish that the license covers a live broadcast or an archived replay. Use audio you have permission to stream and confirm the relevant license covers both uses.

Or let it run in the cloud

For an uploaded recording or playlist that should keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud. Upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera; it does not provide a documented exact-interval jingle cueing workflow, so verify that your playlist structure meets your needs.
