To loop local MP3s on a YouTube live stream, play the files on a computer, set the player to repeat the folder, and send the player’s audio plus a visual feed through a live-stream encoder to YouTube. YouTube’s documented workflow covers connecting an encoder through Live Control Room; the exact repeat-all and audio-routing controls depend on the player and encoder you choose, so verify those controls in their current documentation before relying on them.
What you need for an MP3 radio stream
YouTube’s computer-based live-stream route uses an encoder: software or hardware that sends an audio-and-video feed to YouTube. Because an MP3 playlist is audio-only, the encoder must also send a visual feed, such as a static image or other appropriate video source. YouTube describes encoder streaming alongside mobile and webcam options; for files stored on your computer, the encoder route is the relevant one. See YouTube’s overview of ways to live stream.
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming.
- A folder of MP3 files you have the right to stream.
- An audio player that can repeat the folder or playlist.
- An encoder that can receive the player’s audio and a visual source.
- A stable internet connection with sufficient upload capacity.
Prepare your YouTube channel and stream
- Enable live streaming in advance. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until just before launch. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance.
- Open Live Control Room. Create a new stream or select the one you plan to use. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions show how to obtain the stream URL and stream key there: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Keep the stream key private. Enter the URL and key in the encoder’s streaming settings. The key identifies where the encoder should send the feed and lets YouTube accept it; treat it like a credential, and do not show it in a screen recording or public stream.
Set up folder repeat and audio routing
The exact controls vary by software. Before going live, check the current documentation for the specific audio player and encoder you use; the YouTube guidance cited here does not establish player-specific button names or routing steps.
- Import the folder. In your chosen audio player, add the MP3 files to a playlist or library in the order you want them played. Confirm the playlist contains every intended file and that the files open correctly.
- Enable repeat-all or loop-playlist. Select the mode that repeats the complete playlist, rather than repeating only the current track. Verify behavior by letting the last track finish and confirming playback returns to the first.
- Send the player’s audio to the encoder. Use the audio input or system-audio capture method supported by your chosen encoder. Confirm that the encoder meters or preview respond when the player is playing, and that muting unrelated computer sounds will not silence the music feed.
- Add a visual source. Include a video or still-image source so the encoder produces a video stream as well as the playlist audio. Check that the visual is appropriate for continuous use and that it does not obscure warnings or status information you need to monitor.
Do not assume a player’s local repeat setting, system-audio capture, or audio-device selection automatically carries over to another application. Test the actual combination of player, operating system, and encoder you intend to run.

Use YouTube-recommended audio settings
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends stereo audio at 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. Treat these as platform recommendations and starting points, not a guarantee of a particular sound quality or an uninterrupted stream. Match the encoder’s audio input to the player’s output and check that the stream preview has audible, clean sound. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
Test the stream before making it continuous
- Run a test with the real playlist and visual. Check the opening, transitions between tracks, and the playlist’s wraparound from the last file to the first.
- Preview in Live Control Room. Start the encoder’s feed and confirm that YouTube receives both picture and sound before starting the public stream. YouTube’s setup guidance recommends previewing the incoming stream.
- Check upload headroom. Your available upload capacity should exceed the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend keeping 20% headroom above the bitrate; this is guidance, not a service guarantee. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Monitor stream health. Watch the encoder and Live Control Room for dropped frames, connection warnings, missing audio, or a frozen visual. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the stream; a successful preview does not establish that a long-running stream will never fail.
For a scheduled event, YouTube advises setting up the encoder at least two hours beforehand and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event. Those timings are useful for preflight, but they do not guarantee uptime for a continuous radio stream.

Check music rights before going live
Only stream music for which you have the necessary rights. YouTube states that live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, and that a stream may be interrupted or terminated. Its guidance says licensed third-party music may still require the rights owner to add the channel to a Content ID allowlist; having a license alone may not prevent an interruption if the channel is not allowlisted. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
YouTube’s livestream terms state that the person providing live content represents and warrants that they have the necessary rights, including music licensing rights. Review YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions. This is YouTube’s stated terms language, not individualized legal advice.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| YouTube receives video but no music | Confirm the player is playing, the encoder is capturing the selected player or system-audio source, and the correct input is selected. Check the encoder’s audio meters and preview. |
| The stream stops at the end of the folder | Verify the player is set to repeat the entire playlist, not the current track or no repeat. Test the transition from the final file back to the first before relying on it unattended. |
| Audio is present locally but absent in the preview | Check the player’s output device and the encoder’s selected audio input. Re-test after changing either setting. |
| The preview buffers, drops frames, or shows connection warnings | Check whether available upload capacity exceeds the total stream bitrate, aiming for YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Test the connection and monitor stream health. |
| YouTube interrupts or replaces the stream | Check Live Control Room for a copyright notice or warning. Confirm that you have the necessary rights; if the music is licensed, ask the rights owner about adding your channel to the Content ID allowlist. |
| The encoder cannot connect | Recheck that the stream URL and key were copied correctly into the encoder and that the selected stream in Live Control Room is the one you intend to use. Keep the key private. |
