FFmpeg’s -reconnect options are documented for HTTP, not as a way to retry an RTMP publishing output. To recover a YouTube stream after FFmpeg loses its publishing connection, run the publishing process under a supervisor or wrapper that restarts it when it exits. This can restore publishing, but it cannot recover frames missed during the drop or guarantee uninterrupted playback for viewers.
Why FFmpeg’s -reconnect options are not the fix for RTMP output
FFmpeg documents options such as -reconnect, -reconnect_streamed, and -reconnect_at_eof in its HTTP protocol documentation. That section describes HTTP behavior; it does not make those flags general-purpose retries for an RTMP publishing output. FFmpeg documents RTMP and RTMPS separately, with an FLV output workflow.
So adding HTTP reconnect flags to the output command is not a dependable way to restore a YouTube broadcast. Treat a publishing disconnect as a process-recovery problem: detect that the FFmpeg publisher stopped, then restart it in a controlled way.
Configure FFmpeg to publish to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the intended stream and copy its server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to publish to your channel.
- Use the server URL and key that YouTube provides for that stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery; use the RTMPS endpoint if it is available for your stream and supported by your FFmpeg build. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and encoder settings guidance.
- Build an FFmpeg command around your actual input and encoding options. This schematic shows where the publishing destination goes; replace the bracketed text with your input options, input, encoding options, and YouTube endpoint/key in the format accepted by your setup:

Restart the publisher with supervision, not a tight loop
Run FFmpeg under your operating system’s service manager, a container orchestrator, or a wrapper that monitors the process. Configure it to restart after an unexpected exit, use bounded backoff between attempts, and retain logs. The exact service configuration differs by platform; the following is the recovery logic, not a universal drop-in command:

wait with bounded backoffRestart only after the publisher exits or has been deliberately determined to be unhealthy. A network interruption may cause FFmpeg to exit, but the supervisor cannot itself repair a bad stream key, an unavailable ingest endpoint, an unhealthy source, or an unstable connection. Logs and a test in YouTube’s Live Control Room help distinguish those cases.

Know what a restart will—and will not—resume
The input determines what happens after a restart. A webcam or other live capture source may produce new live content once the capture and publishing processes are running again. A finite video file may start again from the beginning when FFmpeg is relaunched unless your application or wrapper tracks and restores its position. Test the behavior with the actual input rather than assuming a restart resumes at the exact point of failure.
In either case, restarting the publisher does not bring back video or audio frames missed during the outage. It also does not guarantee that viewers see one uninterrupted broadcast or that YouTube treats every interruption as a continuous event. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after streaming ends, but that does not establish how every brief publishing interruption affects continuity. For a scheduled event, YouTube’s encoder instructions say to wait for the preview and then click Go live; check the Live Control Room after reconnecting and follow the state it shows.

Set encoder quality for the connection you actually have
YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and choosing a quality that the connection can sustain reliably. Its recommended bitrate varies by resolution, frame rate, and codec, so there is no single appropriate bitrate for every FFmpeg stream. Use the relevant row in YouTube’s encoder settings table for your actual output rather than copying a universal figure.
- YouTube recommends a keyframe frequency of two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- If the outbound link cannot reliably sustain the selected settings, reduce resolution or bitrate and test again.
- If you stream over Wi-Fi and recurring local instability appears to be the cause, testing a wired connection may help isolate that part of the path. It will not configure FFmpeg retries or fix every ISP or route problem.
Diagnose the failure before changing the retry setup
Use this order to locate the failing layer. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking encoder software, the feed, errors and CPU load, and the outbound internet connection.

- Did FFmpeg exit? Check the process status and logs. If it exited, inspect the final error and let the supervisor restart it with a delay rather than rapidly relaunching it.
- Is the source and encode healthy? Inspect the input feed and FFmpeg output, along with CPU load. An overloaded encoder or failed capture source will not be fixed by reconnect flags.
- Did outbound connectivity fail? Test the connection and upload capacity; compare the chosen output settings with YouTube’s bitrate guidance. Reduce quality if the connection cannot sustain it.
- Are the endpoint and key correct? Recheck the server URL and stream key in Live Control Room. Keep the key private, and verify the selected RTMPS endpoint is supported by your FFmpeg build.
- Did YouTube receive the restarted feed? Check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room. Test the whole recovery path with the intended source and event setup before relying on it live.
