A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11You can stream an internet radio station to YouTube with a Raspberry Pi by receiving the station’s audio over the network, pairing it with a visual, encoding both as a live audiovisual feed, and sending that feed to YouTube Live Control Room’s ingestion address with your stream key. For a straightforward compatible setup, use RTMPS. Before you configure anything, confirm that you have permission to rebroadcast the station’s programming; a publicly accessible stream URL is not permission.
What you need before you begin
- A Raspberry Pi with a supported Raspberry Pi OS installation, suitable power supply, and reliable network connection. Use a board you already own if it can sustain the receive-and-encode workload; the official setup guidance does not establish a particular model as required or benchmark a Pi for this use.
- The station’s actual stream URL and its technical requirements: protocol, authentication, codec, and any required request headers or user agent. Confirm these with the station operator or its published documentation; YouTube’s and Raspberry Pi’s documentation cannot establish them for a particular station.
- An encoder that can receive that station feed, supply or loop a visual, encode audio and video, and send them to YouTube using a supported ingestion protocol.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, an event or stream in Live Control Room, and its ingestion URL and stream key.
- Permission to retransmit the station’s audio on YouTube in the territories where you intend to stream.
Because the station URL, Pi model, operating system, and encoder build vary, there is no single receive command that is safe to prescribe for every setup. The steps below identify what to configure and what to verify rather than assuming a particular station or encoder interface.
1. Confirm rebroadcast rights and station requirements
Get authorization from the station or relevant rights holders before relaying its programming. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content; a match can lead to a placeholder image, warnings, interruptions, or termination. Even when you have a license, a rights owner may need to allowlist your channel to prevent an interruption. YouTube’s live-copyright guidance explains these risks and the provider’s responsibility to secure necessary rights: Copyright issues with live streams.
Separately, record the station’s actual connection details: URL, transport protocol, authentication, audio codec, and any required headers. A URL that plays in a browser does not necessarily work as an encoder input.

2. Prepare the Raspberry Pi
- Install and update a suitable Raspberry Pi OS image, following the setup instructions for your board. Raspberry Pi’s documentation covers model-specific setup and power requirements: Getting started with your Raspberry Pi.
- Connect the Pi to a reliable network and use the correct power supply for the model. Since the station audio arrives over the network, you generally do not need an analog capture card just to receive it.
- Choose the audio output only if you need local monitoring. Raspberry Pi documents USB and HDMI audio output across its models; 3.5 mm audio hardware depends on the model. Do not assume every Pi has an analog jack.
- Install or configure an encoder that can read the station’s specific input and create the output format YouTube accepts. Check the encoder’s documentation for the exact way it takes an audio URL, adds a visual, and handles the stream destination.
3. Choose an ingestion protocol
| Protocol | When it fits | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | A suitable starting point for a compatible encoder; YouTube recommends the encrypted RTMP option. | Confirm the encoder supports RTMPS and can combine the station audio with a visual. Use the endpoint and key shown for your stream in Live Control Room. |
| HLS | When your encoder or workflow specifically needs HLS. | YouTube’s HLS guidance calls for muxed M2TS audio and video, AAC audio, a closed GOP, and media-playlist segments of one to four seconds. HLS also has higher latency than continuous RTMP-style delivery. |
YouTube’s LiveStreams API describes ingestion addresses, stream names, and supported ingestion types. The URL and key are supplied for your stream; do not rely on a hard-coded endpoint copied from an old tutorial: YouTube LiveStreams API reference.
4. Configure audio, video, and bandwidth
Audio
For YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS profile, use AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Make sure the encoder actually maps the station input into the outgoing stream; a video feed can connect successfully even when no audio is being sent.
Visual and video encoding
YouTube’s standard encoder workflow expects an audiovisual feed, so an audio-only radio source needs a visual layer. This might be a static image or an animation, provided your encoder can produce it. Select resolution and bitrate to match that visual, the Pi’s encoding capability, and available upload bandwidth. For H.264 at 720p/30 fps, YouTube’s current encoder-settings page lists 8 Mbps recommended and 3 Mbps minimum; at 480p/30 fps, it lists 4 Mbps recommended and 0.4 Mbps minimum. These are YouTube recommendations, not a benchmark showing that a particular Pi can encode continuously at those settings.

Keyframes and upload capacity
Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. Measure upload speed, not just download speed. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend about 20% more upload capacity than the stream bitrate to leave headroom. If your connection cannot sustain the chosen video bitrate plus audio and headroom, lower the resolution or bitrate and test again.
Settings and recommendations can change; check YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before going live.
5. Create the live stream and protect its key
- Enable live streaming on the YouTube channel you intend to use, then create or select the event or stream in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Choose the protocol your encoder will use and copy the corresponding ingestion URL and stream key from YouTube’s displayed stream configuration.
- Enter the URL and key in the encoder’s destination fields. Some encoders use separate fields; others expect the key as a stream name. Follow the encoder’s interface and the configuration YouTube displays rather than guessing how to concatenate them.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube treats it like a password: do not expose it in screenshots or public scripts, and reset it if it is disclosed. See Manage live stream settings.
6. Test before a public broadcast
Run an unlisted or otherwise controlled test using the same station audio and visual you expect to use live. Check that the audio is audible, the visual appears, sound and picture stay synchronized, and Live Control Room reports healthy ingestion. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the real broadcast and monitoring stream health and messages: YouTube streaming tips.

The encoder cannot connect
Recheck the protocol, ingestion URL, and key against the current Live Control Room configuration. If using RTMPS, make sure the destination uses the RTMPS URL and the port specified by YouTube or your encoder. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder.
YouTube rejects an HLS feed
Check that audio and video are muxed in M2TS, audio is AAC, the GOP is closed, and the media playlist and segments meet YouTube’s requirements. HLS ingestion also requires the appropriate HTTPS requests; consult YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide for the current protocol details.
A copyright match interrupts the broadcast
Stop or replace the matched content, review channel restrictions in YouTube Studio, and resolve the issue with the station or rights holder. A license may not by itself prevent interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel. Do not resume the same programming until the rights issue is resolved.

Cost and a cloud alternative
If you already own a suitable Pi, the hardware cost for this setup may be limited to what you need for power, networking, or storage; if you do not own one, the board itself is an additional cost. The sources cited here do not establish a required model or a price, and they do not show that a separate sound card is needed to receive an internet source.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel built around uploaded radio recordings or other pre-recorded video, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining your own Pi encoder: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast directly from a camera or stream to platforms other than YouTube.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers. StreamNeo can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly is $9.99 per month.
