- An ocean video and audio track whose licenses allow the intended use, including a continuous livestream. Keep records of permissions and license terms for each asset.
- An encoder workflow that can send your prepared audiovisual feed to YouTube Live. YouTube lists encoder streaming as an option for video feeds and production hardware. YouTube’s streaming setup guidance.
- A dependable internet connection, power, and a computer capable of running your chosen encoder if you stream locally. YouTube does not require a mini PC or specify a particular computer model.
Prepare the ocean video and sound
Confirm the rights for every asset
Ocean footage and waves audio are not automatically free to reuse. Check the actual license for each clip and recording, including whether it permits public livestreaming, repeated playback, and any monetization you intend to use. Save the license, permission, or other documentation. YouTube requires live content to comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service and may restrict streams that violate its rules. Build a continuous program
Prepare the video and audio as the program you want viewers to hear and see. The official YouTube sources explain encoder livestreaming and the distinction between a broadcast and an incoming stream, but do not prescribe a particular encoder recipe for looping a pre-recorded ocean video. Confirm that your selected encoder or playback setup can repeat the prepared material continuously, and test that the picture and sound remain synchronized and free of unintended gaps at the loop point.
Set up YouTube Live and the encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and create or configure the live event. Use the current YouTube Studio/Live Control Room interface and select the encoder route. Interface labels can change, so follow the current on-screen prompts rather than relying on screenshots or instructions tied to an older layout.
- Copy the stream key and ingestion details into your encoder. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it. YouTube’s API documentation distinguishes the incoming stream from the viewer-facing broadcast: a broadcast is a distinct YouTube video bound to a stream. YouTube Live Streaming API guide.
- Set video, audio, and transport settings. Choose resolution and frame rate that your encoder and upstream connection can sustain. YouTube recommends RTMPS and lists CBR, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and resolution-specific bitrate guidance. Use the current YouTube encoder settings for the settings appropriate to your chosen output.
- For H.264, use the relevant YouTube bitrate recommendation as a starting point. YouTube’s guidance lists 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendations, not guaranteed quality levels; check the current table for other resolutions and frame rates.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. Set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR) as recommended in YouTube’s guidance.
Test, start, and monitor the broadcast
Test the real program before launch
Run a test with the actual ocean footage and sound, including representative motion and the loop transition. Check that the encoder is sending the intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and audio, and use a speed test to confirm that the connection has enough capacity for a reliable feed. Start the event and verify it is live
Start sending the feed from the encoder, then check the Live Control Room for the incoming signal and stream-health messages. Follow the current Studio prompts to begin the public broadcast. An encoder feed and its YouTube broadcast are related but distinct: YouTube’s API describes each broadcast as a distinct video bound to a stream, and documents an ongoing 24/7 broadcast model. Plan for an unattended local stream
A 24/7 local stream depends on the encoder host, power, internet connection, and playback loop continuing to work. Decide how you will notice an interruption and restart or recover the feed. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health, but its guidance does not guarantee uninterrupted connectivity or specify a failover arrangement. A dedicated mini PC may be one way to host an encoder, but it is optional equipment, not a YouTube requirement.

Common problems and fixes
- You cannot start a live stream: Check that the channel is verified, that no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days applies, and that the operator meets YouTube’s stated minimum age of 16. Review current channel eligibility in YouTube Studio.
- The encoder does not connect: Recheck the stream key and ingestion details in the current Live Control Room, confirm the encoder is using the supported configuration and RTMPS, and replace a key if it has been exposed.
- The stream is unstable or reports poor health: Reduce output quality or bitrate to a level your connection can reliably sustain, then test again. Use YouTube’s current resolution and frame-rate bitrate table rather than assuming a single setting fits every connection.
- Picture or sound stutters, or the loop has a gap: Test the exact program and transition before launch. Check the encoder’s playback/loop behavior and whether the host has enough resources for the selected output. The specific file-loop configuration depends on the encoder you choose.
- The feed is running but the public event is not live: Check the Live Control Room state and follow its prompts to start the broadcast. Sending an incoming stream is not the same as confirming the viewer-facing YouTube broadcast.
- YouTube flags or restricts the content: Review the relevant Community Guidelines, Terms of Service, and rights for each video and audio asset. The fact that footage depicts nature does not establish permission to rebroadcast it.
