You can broadcast archived game jam VODs as a continuous YouTube Live feed by playing the files through an encoder connected to a scheduled or active YouTube stream. YouTube supplies the stream URL and key; your playback and encoder setup must handle repeating the VODs and recovering from playback or connection failures. Plan in sessions shorter than 12 hours if you need YouTube’s automatic archive, and confirm you have rights to every video and audio track before going live.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel verified for live streaming, with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says streamers must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- The archived VOD files you intend to play, plus a playback and encoder setup that can send the playback feed to YouTube Live. YouTube supports encoder-based streaming for uses such as gameplay and overlays; it does not prescribe a particular file-loop configuration.
- Permission to broadcast all material in the VODs, including music and other third-party content. Your right to show a recording does not necessarily include the right to rebroadcast its soundtrack.
A software encoder can handle this workflow; YouTube also supports hardware encoders and describes them as an option for higher-production events. The official guidance does not establish that dedicated hardware is necessary for replaying game jam VODs. Choose based on whether the setup can repeat your files, maintain the output, recover from interruptions and record a local backup.
Set up the continuous VOD broadcast
1. Prepare and test the playlist
Organize the VOD files in the order you want viewers to see them. In your chosen playback and encoder software, configure playback to repeat the playlist or return to the beginning when it ends. The exact controls vary by software; YouTube’s encoder instructions do not specify loop, playlist-repeat or automatic-restart settings. Test the complete playlist locally, including the transition from its last item back to the first, and verify that audio continues as expected.
2. Create or schedule the YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and follow the current path into YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to create a stream or schedule one.
- Scheduling creates a shareable watch page and allows viewers to receive reminders. If you reuse settings from an earlier stream, check the carried-over details—including the stream key—before you start.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
For available event options and reused settings, see Manage live stream settings.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Configure the encoder and start playback
Set the encoder to send the VOD playback feed to YouTube using the event’s stream URL and key. Use the encoder’s documentation for its exact controls: the official YouTube setup pages establish the URL-and-key workflow but do not define a universal bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval or loop setting for every encoder and source file. Check that your chosen output is supported by your encoder and connection, and that the upload capacity can sustain it.
Start the feed and wait for the YouTube preview in Live Control Room. Check that the correct video and audio are present, then start or confirm the live event in Studio. Keep the encoder and playback process running while the broadcast is intended to continue.

4. Monitor the stream and keep a local recording
Watch the YouTube preview and the actual watch page after going live. Confirm that sound is audible, the picture is stable, and the playlist advances and repeats correctly. YouTube’s live-streaming tips for computer streams recommend previewing and monitoring; keeping a local recording gives you a backup if the live feed or archive is incomplete.
Plan session length and archives
YouTube’s current archive guidance says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving each broadcast matters, run deliberate sessions below that threshold and record locally rather than relying on a single uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast to produce a complete YouTube archive. Review YouTube’s archive live streams guidance when planning session boundaries.

For a continuous channel, decide how one session will end and the next begin, and how you will preserve or publish the resulting recordings. The archive threshold is a YouTube platform limit, not a guarantee that every stream under 12 hours will be archived successfully.
Clear rights for every VOD before broadcasting
YouTube’s livestream terms require the channel operator to have the necessary rights for all live content, including music. A game jam recording may contain game audio, music, participant voices, presentations or other material whose rights are separate from the right to host the original recording. Obtain permission that covers YouTube live use and the relevant territories before rebroadcasting.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies a match, the live stream may be interrupted or terminated; a Content ID claim may also appear on an archived live stream after the broadcast ends. Where applicable, ask rights holders about allowing your channel through Content ID. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions and guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| No preview appears in Live Control Room. | The encoder is not sending to the event’s URL and key, or the feed has not started. | Confirm the encoder is running and that both connection details match the selected event. Keep the stream key private. |
| The picture appears, but audio is missing or wrong. | The playback or encoder audio routing does not include the intended VOD audio. | Check the source file’s audio locally, then verify the encoder’s audio input and the Live Control Room preview before starting the event. |
| The playlist stops at the last VOD. | Repeat or playlist behavior is not configured in the playback software. | Enable the software’s repeat or playlist option and test the end-to-start transition before the broadcast. YouTube does not supply a universal loop setting. |
| The stream is interrupted after a copyright match. | The VOD includes third-party material that YouTube identifies, or the channel lacks the required live-use rights. | Resolve rights with the relevant owners; ask about Content ID allowlisting when appropriate. Do not assume that permission to upload a VOD covers a live rebroadcast. |
| A long broadcast has no complete YouTube archive. | The stream exceeded the 12-hour threshold at which YouTube warns it may not capture the broadcast. | Use shorter planned sessions and maintain a local recording instead of relying on one indefinite stream. |
| The channel cannot start a live stream. | The channel may not meet eligibility requirements or may have a live-streaming restriction. | Check verification and channel eligibility in YouTube Studio, then review YouTube’s live-streaming requirements. |
