How to Stream a Mixxx Internet Radio Show to YouTube Live

Mixxx broadcasts to Icecast or Shoutcast, not directly to YouTube Live. Route its audio into an encoder, add a visual, and stream using YouTube’s URL and key.

Mixxx’s documented Live Broadcasting feature sends audio to Icecast or Shoutcast—not directly to YouTube Live. To broadcast a Mixxx show on YouTube, route Mixxx’s audio into an encoder such as OBS, add a visual source, then send the encoder’s output to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. If you also want a conventional internet-radio feed, configure Mixxx separately for an Icecast or Shoutcast server.

Choose the signal path that fits your show

  • YouTube only: Mixxx audio goes to an encoder, which combines it with a visual and sends the result to YouTube Live. You do not need an Icecast or Shoutcast server for this workflow.
  • YouTube plus internet radio: Send one feed from Mixxx to an Icecast or Shoutcast server and route Mixxx audio separately into your YouTube encoder. The radio-server credentials and YouTube’s stream URL and key are separate configurations.

Mixxx’s documented Live Broadcasting targets Icecast and Shoutcast; YouTube Live uses an encoder configured with a YouTube stream URL and key. The Mixxx manual page reviewed is for version 2.4 and notes that 2.5 is the latest release; menu labels may differ between versions and operating systems. See the Mixxx Live Broadcasting manual and YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

What you need before going live

  • A working Mixxx installation and your show audio.
  • An encoder such as OBS that can capture the audio Mixxx plays and send a live feed to YouTube.
  • A visual source for the encoder scene, such as a show graphic or camera. A camera is optional; the stream still needs a video image.
  • YouTube Live access and a stream created or selected in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
  • A stable upload connection with enough capacity for the selected video and audio settings.

You do not necessarily need an external microphone, mixer, or audio interface for a software-only show. YouTube identifies these as possible encoder equipment; they are useful when your setup needs external audio inputs. Audio-capture and loopback steps vary by operating system, so check instructions for your specific OS and encoder rather than assuming one universal menu path. YouTube’s live-streaming equipment guidance describes common equipment.

Set up Mixxx audio in an encoder and go live

  1. Create or select the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there into the encoder’s streaming settings. The key is a credential that lets YouTube accept the encoder feed; keep it private, as you would a password. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup steps.
  2. Build an encoder scene. Add a visual source, such as a show graphic or camera, and select the audio input carrying Mixxx playback. Start Mixxx and play a track or test recording. Check the encoder’s audio meters and monitor the preview to confirm that the sound is reaching the scene. The exact desktop-audio or loopback selection depends on your operating system and encoder version.
  3. Use YouTube’s RTMPS address when supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. Retrieve the appropriate RTMPS URL from the Live Control Room and enter it in your encoder with the stream key. Do not guess or reuse a server endpoint; use the URL YouTube provides for that stream. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
  4. Set encoding and check the connection. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264 video, constant bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval. It accepts AAC or MP3 audio and recommends 128 kbps for stereo audio. Select resolution, frame rate, and video bitrate according to YouTube’s current settings table and your available upload capacity; then test the chosen configuration and check stream health. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
  5. Preview before the public start. Start streaming from the encoder and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that the visual appears and that Mixxx audio is audible before clicking Go live for a scheduled stream. Keep monitoring audio, video, and stream health during the broadcast.
  6. End the broadcast cleanly. Use the YouTube stream controls to end the scheduled stream, including End stream when shown, and stop the encoder feed as appropriate to your workflow. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain the stream-ending process.

Configure Mixxx for a separate Icecast or Shoutcast feed

Use this setup only if you also want listeners to hear the show through an internet-radio server. It is not a step in the YouTube encoder workflow. The Mixxx manual describes server type, host name or IP, login, mount, port, and password as connection settings.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Open Mixxx’s Live Broadcasting settings. Choose the server type and enter the connection details supplied by your Icecast or Shoutcast provider.
  2. For Icecast, enter the mount point separately. The Mixxx manual requires an Icecast mount point and warns not to put a full URL in the Host field.
  3. Choose a supported audio format. Mixxx documents MP3 or Ogg Vorbis for Icecast output and MP3 for Shoutcast output. Its manual describes 128 or 160 kbps as common radio-stream audio bitrates.
  4. Connect and verify the radio feed. Check the server’s own listener or status page to confirm it receives audio. This does not confirm the separate YouTube encoder feed; check that in YouTube’s Live Control Room.

For version-specific field descriptions, use the Mixxx 2.4 Live Broadcasting manual. These radio-server bitrate examples are Mixxx manual guidance, not YouTube video-encoding settings.

Choose audio capture or external hardware

For a software-only show, capturing the computer audio that carries Mixxx playback may be enough. The operating-system routing method differs, and the Mixxx and YouTube documentation cited here does not establish a universal set of capture menus. Confirm that the encoder’s meters respond to Mixxx and that the YouTube preview carries the sound before the live start.

If you need to add a microphone or mixer, an audio interface may help connect that equipment to the computer. It is an optional, setup-dependent choice, not a requirement for Mixxx-to-YouTube streaming. Verify compatibility with your operating system and audio-routing setup before buying hardware.

Copyright and YouTube live-stream checks

Before broadcasting, confirm that you have the rights needed to use every track, recording, graphic, and other element in the show on YouTube. A track’s availability in Mixxx or permission to play it in a venue does not by itself establish permission for a YouTube livestream. YouTube may identify copyrighted material in live content; consult YouTube’s copyright guidance and its channel monetization policies for the rules relevant to your channel and content.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • YouTube never receives a signal: Check that the encoder is streaming, the URL and stream key match the selected Live Control Room stream, and the connection is using the endpoint YouTube supplied. If supported, try the provided RTMPS URL.
  • The preview has video but no Mixxx audio: Confirm Mixxx is playing, select the correct system-audio or loopback source in the encoder, and watch its audio meters. Recheck OS-specific routing permissions and device selection.
  • Audio meters move but the YouTube preview is silent: Verify the encoder’s audio track is enabled for streaming and that the preview is monitoring the intended scene and track. Check the Live Control Room again before going live.
  • The stream appears unstable or YouTube reports poor health: Compare the selected resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with YouTube’s current recommendations and your upload capacity. Test at a lower setting if the connection cannot sustain the chosen feed.
  • The Mixxx radio server rejects the connection: Confirm the server type, host, port, login, password, and—for Icecast—the mount point with your provider. Do not enter a full URL in Mixxx’s Host field.
  • Music is interrupted or the live stream is restricted: Check YouTube Studio for copyright or live-stream notices and resolve them through YouTube’s stated process. Only broadcast material you are entitled to use.
