To loop a museum exhibit video on YouTube Live, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, then run FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1 before the video’s -i input. Test the feed privately first: the example below is a starting point, not a universally valid command, and the museum must confirm broadcast rights for every part of the video.
Before you start: confirm channel access and rights
Check livestream eligibility
YouTube requires the channel to be verified and free of live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Enabling livestreaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the day of the event. See YouTube’s livestream eligibility and setup guidance.
Clear the rights in the actual media
Having a video file or displaying an object in a gallery does not by itself establish permission to livestream every element. Check the rights for artwork and image reproductions, films, narration, music, and third-party footage. Record the permitted platforms, territories, broadcast duration, and whether an archived replay is allowed. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have necessary rights for live content on Google services, including relevant music rights. This is a platform requirement, not a legal determination about a particular work or jurisdiction; ask the institution’s rights team or counsel about uncertain cases.
Create the YouTube encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select an encoder-based stream or scheduled event, following YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Choose the event’s visibility. For initial testing, use an unlisted or otherwise private setup appropriate to your channel and audience.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into your encoder configuration. The key is a credential: do not include it in a public script, screenshot, document, or terminal capture. YouTube describes the key as equivalent to a password and address for the feed; reset it if it is exposed. See Manage live stream settings.
Loop a single exhibit video with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop is an input option: -1 requests infinite repetition, while 0 means no looping. Put the option before the corresponding -i, as in this illustrative single-file command:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i exhibit.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -f flv "<YouTube ingest URL>/<STREAM_KEY>"
Replace the filename and placeholders with values that match the media and the stream details in Live Control Room. Do not paste a real stream key into material that others can access. The command demonstrates the loop option and a common encoder-output shape; it has not been validated against your files or FFmpeg build. Output URL and protocol, codecs, frame rate, bitrate, audio handling, scaling, and available encoder support can vary. Follow YouTube’s current stream details, then verify the actual feed in a test event. FFmpeg documents the input option and command structure in its official documentation; YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion and publishes encoder setting guidance.
If the exhibit uses several files
A multi-file playlist needs a separately tested concat or playlist approach; the single-file loop command above does not define how to move among files. Before a public event, test the chosen method for joins, audio continuity, aspect ratio, and file compatibility. Do not assume a join will be seamless merely because each file plays on its own.

Choose encoder settings and test the feed
Match output to the source and connection
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with no more than four seconds. It supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 subject to codec and stream-protocol considerations. For ordinary SDR, YouTube gives Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth; HDR has different requirements. Use settings compatible with your source, installed FFmpeg build, compute capacity, and stable upload bandwidth rather than assuming the highest resolution is best. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the selected stream configuration.
Run a private test before the public event
- Start FFmpeg and check the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that the expected video and audio arrive, and inspect the stream health messages.
- Let the test run long enough to observe a repeat. Check that the loop resumes as expected and listen for breaks or unexpected changes at the boundary.
- Check that the chosen quality remains stable on the available upload connection. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring audio/video quality rather than treating a configured encoder as proof that the feed is healthy. Its live streaming tips also cover event checks and local archive integrity when recording locally.
- Once the test is satisfactory, confirm the scheduled event’s visibility and timing in Live Control Room before starting the public broadcast.
Keep FFmpeg running for a continuous broadcast
The loop option repeats the input; it does not keep the computer, network connection, or FFmpeg process alive by itself. A local workstation must stay powered and connected for the broadcast, and someone needs a plan to notice and restart a stopped process. A continuously available server or cloud machine is another operational option, but it brings its own institutional IT approval, key security, network reliability, monitoring, and operating-cost considerations. No particular hosting provider or price is established here.

Troubleshooting common failures
- You cannot start a livestream: confirm channel verification and eligibility, including whether the channel has had a live-stream restriction in the prior 90 days. If this is the first livestream activation, allow up to 24 hours.
- YouTube shows no incoming signal: check that the stream URL and key belong to the selected Live Control Room stream, that the key has not been reset, and that the encoder command’s output destination matches the current stream details. Keep the key private while checking it.
- The video does not repeat: verify that
-stream_loop -1appears before the relevant-i. It is an input option, so placing it after the input may not apply it to that file. - The feed is unstable or reports poor health: test a lower output quality or bitrate that fits the stable upload connection, and recheck the preview and health messages. Consult YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the selected resolution and codec.
- Video arrives without usable audio, or the picture looks wrong: verify source tracks and output audio/video settings against the actual media and FFmpeg build. Check the test preview, aspect ratio, and audio at both the beginning and loop boundary; the illustrative command cannot guarantee compatibility.
- Multiple videos have gaps or abrupt changes: test the playlist or concat method and inspect every join, including audio continuity and differing dimensions or formats, before scheduling the public event.
- The stream key appears in a screenshot or shared script: treat it as compromised and reset it in YouTube’s stream settings, then update the private encoder configuration.
