To run a restaurant menu or food-promo video as a YouTube Live stream, send the prerecorded video through a streaming encoder, set the encoder to repeat the video, and connect it to a YouTube stream using the stream URL and key. YouTube supports software encoders on a computer as well as standalone hardware encoders. The loop control depends on the encoder you choose, so confirm its current instructions before scheduling your broadcast.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before a promotion. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A prerecorded video file containing the menu, food footage, or promotion you want viewers to see.
- An encoder: either streaming software running on a computer or a standalone hardware encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers both categories.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream bitrate, plus margin for fluctuations.
- Permission to use every video, image, music track, voiceover, and other element in the program. A live presentation does not remove copyright obligations.
This method sends the prerecorded file as the content of a live encoder feed. It is different from uploading a finished video to YouTube or creating a playlist of ordinary videos.
Choose a streaming path

YouTube supports software and hardware encoder workflows; a hardware purchase is not a prerequisite. Compare the options against your available equipment, need for unattended operation, protocol and codec compatibility, and total cost.
Set up the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live stream using the encoder workflow. Follow the current prompts in Studio; labels and layout may change.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event into the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in a public screenshot, or share it with people who do not need access. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting.
- Keep the event private or unlisted while configuring and testing it if you do not want the test visible publicly. Confirm the intended audience and scheduled start time in Studio before going live.
Configure the video loop and stream output
Make the prerecorded video repeat
In the encoder, choose the menu or promo file as the outgoing video source and enable repeat, loop, or the equivalent playback option. The exact control is encoder-specific. YouTube’s encoder documentation does not specify the current click-by-click procedure for looping a media file in OBS, so check the documentation for your installed encoder version instead of relying on a guessed menu path.

Preview the whole playback path, including what happens when the file reaches its end. Confirm that the next cycle starts cleanly, that the audio does not stop or jump unexpectedly, and that no desktop, camera, or unrelated source appears over the menu video.
Choose protocol, codecs, and keyframes
For a general encoder setup, YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Its listed video codecs for RTMP/RTMPS include H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; listed audio codecs are AAC and MP3. Use a codec your encoder supports and that is accepted for the selected YouTube ingest workflow. YouTube recommends constant-bitrate encoding, a two-second keyframe interval, and a maximum interval of four seconds. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or connection can sustain a stream.

YouTube also documents HLS ingestion and lists OBS among encoders with HLS output. HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments, and it entails additional requirements: one-to-four-second segments, TS segment format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. Use HLS only when your encoder or stream requirements call for it; do not select it by default.
Match resolution and bitrate to your upload
YouTube’s current H.264 guidance recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are recommended settings, not measured guarantees. Choose an output your encoder and measured connection can sustain; a lower resolution with a stable feed is generally more useful than a higher setting that repeatedly drops frames.

Run a speed test from the location and connection that will carry the broadcast. YouTube says available upload bitrate must exceed the stream bitrate and recommends 20% network headroom in its streaming tips. For example, a 14 Mbps stream needs more than 14 Mbps of usable upload capacity, with additional capacity reserved for headroom; do not treat a speed-test peak as a promise of sustained performance. If other devices or services share the connection, account for their upload use too.
Test before the promotion
- Set up the event well ahead of time. YouTube’s event guidance recommends beginning setup at least two hours before the scheduled start and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before it.
- Start the encoder and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Check that the correct event receives the feed and that the video is playing at the intended resolution and frame rate.
- Listen to representative audio and watch enough motion to identify silence, clipping, unexpected transitions, frozen frames, or aspect-ratio problems. A menu loop may have long still shots, so include portions with movement as well as any quiet sections.
- Review stream health and any messages in Live Control Room. Let the test run long enough to reach a loop boundary and verify that playback returns to the beginning as intended.
- Check the actual public or test playback on another device where possible, then end the test deliberately and confirm the scheduled event remains configured as intended.
Run and end the broadcast
Before the scheduled promotion, confirm the event, stream key, encoder source, loop setting, audio, and network are all the ones you tested. During the broadcast, monitor Live Control Room for stream-health warnings and check that the video and sound remain correct. Keep the encoder computer and connection available for the full DIY broadcast.

When the event is over, stop the broadcast in YouTube’s live interface as appropriate, then stop the encoder so it is no longer sending the feed. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a longer stream will be archived automatically.
